Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary

Don’t want to say too much about the reward on offer - a work thing, with real kudos, let’s leave it there.

But... it’s only open to people who self-identify as transgender or non-binary (or a lot of other words which, having Googled, are synonyms for the same).

Some people don't identify with any gender is one of the descriptors of what non-binary means. And that’s true of me. I don’t identify as female, I just happen to have a female body. I do “present in a feminine way” though. And I’m straight, married, still breastfeeding...

But, I can apply, right? I’m nervous, but fucked off with myself for cowering behind the parapet for this long.

Fluid queer non-binary.

I know what 'queer' means, I'm transPennine. Usage: there's nowt so queer as folk. (Folk too, see? No wonder Yorkshire is ahead of the curve on this.)

Lweji · 09/10/2018 11:01

Claim you are analogical.

ShovingLeopard · 09/10/2018 11:02

Thanks BrownPaperTeddy and LangCleg. I wonder if OP's opportunity is lawful?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 09/10/2018 11:06

Go for it, op. How are they going to prove that you don't self-identify as non-binary?

FlorenceLyons · 09/10/2018 11:07

As a first step, I'd ask what definition of non-binary your organisation is using. If you're comfortable that you could justify being in that category (which I suspect you almost certainly could), then I'd go for it. But I'd want that definition first.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 09/10/2018 11:07

TransPennine!😂
Are you rickety, grubby and rarely on time?

Doobigetta · 09/10/2018 11:09

so when an athletic trans woman wants to participate in the olympics it's the 'end of women's sports' and they're 'invading women's spaces' but when you want to participate in something that's only for trans people you can go and there's nothing wrong with it despite you don't feel gender dysphoria or feel any dissonance with the sex you were born as hmm

Welcome to what we call “the fucking point”, ughh.

oneWeirdReSister · 09/10/2018 11:09

I would do it, for sure.

DH and I are probably going to self ID as the opposite "gender" if/when this comes into law. We will remain a heterosexual couple of course, but he'll be able to retire earlier and I'll get a payrise. Seems like a good idea to us.

ContessasGulagSpaDay · 09/10/2018 11:10

I present as female (femme) but work in science (Ooh, scary numbers!) and have been known to construct furniture. Clearly I am nonbinary AF.

UpstartCrow · 09/10/2018 11:11

Marc has actually done a lot of work on this and you should listen to ze.

ChilliJamandAvocado · 09/10/2018 11:15

"Any woman who has ever told a man to fuck off is non binary" - Cathy Brennan

Surely you've said that to some asshat ex boyfriend in the past, some guy who was hassling you in a club, some besuited commuter who pushed past you to get on a busy train... in which case you were very much upsetting the gender applecart and should deffo apply for that opportunity.

Zeugma · 09/10/2018 11:17

Do take a look at the self-declared non-binary Molly Angelica Gerlach-Arthurs (now seemingly calling theirself just plain ol Molly Gerlach on Twatter), stalwart of the Green Party and chum of a certain ex-member-who-shall-not-be-named, who despite insisting they've 'never felt a connection to the label 'woman'' still chooses to present as one, complete with long hair, make-up and sparkly headband.

No adjustments appear to be required.

Go for it, Somerville!

cooblanket · 09/10/2018 11:23

No Sod They would, because I would accuse them of literally killing me by implying I can't fix their boiler like a cis gas fitter.

You can't get quicker than a cis gas fitter.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/10/2018 11:27

I think I am non binary, but i have on occasion worn a tie. So perhaps I’m more demiboi ? Or pangender ? Help me wise enbies, I have to indentify my identity ...!

VickyEadie · 09/10/2018 11:31

IfNotNowThenWhen1 "I present as an old tarting slap (thank you Upstart Crow)"

I've decided to identify as a luvvy-kissy.

stillathing · 09/10/2018 11:31

Younger women, men, see women taking on the majority of childcare etc and assume its because they fully identify with the female gender. They don't see the structural oppression that means it's often the only choice even where women are higher educated than the fathers. This state of affairs - gender ideology - suits the government just fine. That's a whole load less people trying to do anything about the structural oppression of women.

I am about to mow the lawn.

Clearly non binary.

I also put the bins out each week.

I also cook.

And wear trousers.

Clearly I have an identity crisis.

placemats · 09/10/2018 11:35

Men who complain about male toilets not having baby changing facilities clearly have an identity crisis.

Barracker · 09/10/2018 11:38

if you don't even know what means then you don't qualify to be it

I think I can get on board with that sentence, speaking as an adult human female...

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 11:40

Welcome to what we call “the fucking point”

The denseness is extraordinary, isn't it?

newtlover · 09/10/2018 11:49

thrown into confusion by PP
I am good at reading maps, yet bad at driving??
Not only this but it's a division of labour that DCs when younger were exposed to...how will they cope?
More confusion- dresses and jewelry (yes), make up heels and depilation (no)
also, have been known to tell men to fuck off
guess I must be NB

VaguelyAware · 09/10/2018 11:50

I am going to do this. I will officially be non-binary. Some days I am more feminine - I even wear makeup, jewellery & dresses on rare occasions. Mostly I wear jeans, trainers, nothing "sparkly" or obviously feminine at all. And I have a very, very male haircut. It's only his balding spot that makes his hair look more mannish than mine... Grin

I suspect this will piss DH off no end. Maybe I'll start manspreading when we're on the train. He's a right twat for this, I usually refuse to sit next to him.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 09/10/2018 11:51

You and DH could be the new Fox and Owl. Hmm

Doesn't this just show how absurd all this is? Most of us here reject gender stereotypes. But we're not the right kind of gender nonconforming.

I struggle with modern art. I have often thought that anybody could do some of what I see described as modern art, without any special training, which makes me think that the starting point is that you have to self-ID as an artist for what you produce to be accepted as art. This seems similar. If you are wholly on board with gender theory you can ID as non-binary, genderqueer, queer, whatever you like. If you're gender critical, tough, you are a boring old straight person, no matter what you wear or think or do.

What a lot we have to thank Goldsmith's for.
