I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary

Don’t want to say too much about the reward on offer - a work thing, with real kudos, let’s leave it there.

But... it’s only open to people who self-identify as transgender or non-binary (or a lot of other words which, having Googled, are synonyms for the same).

Some people don't identify with any gender is one of the descriptors of what non-binary means. And that’s true of me. I don’t identify as female, I just happen to have a female body. I do “present in a feminine way” though. And I’m straight, married, still breastfeeding...

But, I can apply, right? I’m nervous, but fucked off with myself for cowering behind the parapet for this long.

@KennDodd

Yes, I remember that case. More importantly, the amazing Magdalen Berns remembered.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 09/10/2018 21:13

Mary Berry wears y-fronts. She's neutrois.

Wow! Shock

We really are just down to Barbie.

Velella · 09/10/2018 21:22

Go for it.

My only problem with the definition is that I don't have a Gender identity.

Somerville1234 · 09/10/2018 21:25

That court case is fascinating.

EmeraldVillage yes I feel those concerns to some extent about the potential career blowback. But I feel like I’m going to explode if I have to keep pretending that the Emperor isn’t naked. And a few years ago when I was a lone parent I couldn’t have risked any income but I can now. (It’s another consideration for why DH needs to be fully on board though, of course.)

We really are just down to Barbie.

Even Barbie might be a bit questionable, if her CV on Wikipedia is anything to go by.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbie%27s_careers
Apparently she's been a pilot, a Nascar driver, a Canadian Mountie and an astronaut....
Sounds pretty genderqueer to me.

PineappleSunrise · 09/10/2018 22:06

I think I'm bigender. (It sounds much more fun than agender, don't you think?)

RollerJed · 09/10/2018 22:10

Good luck OP. I'm going to follow your thread, I hope your dh is also on-board and you apply.

newtlover · 09/10/2018 22:16

re the court case
I feel really sorry for the poor judges who have to try and navigate all this nonsense as if it might be serious and internally coherent- I mean they just don't stand a chance, but if they have to decide on a case they can't just throw their hands up and say 'wtf it's all bonkers'

Fearandsurprise · 09/10/2018 22:37

PineappleSunrise It’s hard not to read bigender as big-ender. Which makes me think of crank shafts.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/10/2018 23:20

It’s hard not to read bigender as big-ender
Makes me think of bigendian - more in the original Swiftian sense than byte order.

Benjaminbuttonschild · 09/10/2018 23:44

Wow Shockughhhh has found a way to be both cis hate this phrase phobic and transphobic at the same time!

That's impressive!

So 'cis' gendered people can't apply for this award - that's cis exclusionary and cis phobic. OP is clearly non binary and Ughhh tells him/her that they can't be! That's blatant transphobia Shock

Zeugma · 10/10/2018 08:49

In particular, a full understanding by all governmental departments, not just the GEO, will be required as to the clear distinction between the concepts of sex and gender.

They didn't understand. I hope everyone's seen the highly illuminating thread on here which quotes parts of the debate on the original GRA (when it was at the bill stage). People you wouldn't at all expect - Norman Tebbitt, anyone? - 'got it' immediately. Others were so hasty in their eagerness to appear enlightened that they brushed aside all logic and sense in a way that....errr....we're all too familiar with now.

See here for the details, if you haven't already. They're pretty horrifying

ShineOnHarvestMoon · 10/10/2018 09:03

there's nothing wrong with it despite you don't feel gender dysphoria or feel any dissonance with the sex you were born as

Current transactivism rejects the requirement that in order to be considered 'trans' a person must experience gender dysphoria. Current transactivism argues that it's enough to say that you "feel" or "believe" you are female.

If we are applying the idea of "non-binary" to gender (a opposed to sex), then many many women are non-binary. I am. I don't conform to stereotypes of femininity; I earn more than most men; I manage a lot of people, including men; I have never been pregnant nor given birth; I have never been a SAHM; I have always earned the bulk of my household's income.

On all those counts, I'm a man ...

ShineOnHarvestMoon · 10/10/2018 09:09

The behaviour of many GC women frequently falls outside 'stereotypical gender norms' IME

Yesss!

I think Stonewall is in severe danger of forgetting about the abuse & violence - physical and verbal - meted out against women who dare to look a bit butch.

And the aggression and anger expressed towards any woman who dares to have an opinion ...

By Stonewall's definitions, any gender critical woman is queer and/or transgender and/or non-binary.

EllariaSand · 10/10/2018 10:09

Seems like the definition of a man is "someone who is whatever they say they are"; and the definition of a woman is "someone who is whatever they're told they are."

DrSusan · 10/10/2018 10:23

I'm something of a lurker here but this whole 'non-binary' bollocks has been swirling around my head since filling in the Scottish GRA consultation. The idea that this should be included as a category in the same way as male and female is just soooooo absurd. If this happens (as it might) we should all define as non-binary on census forms, change our passports, drivers licenses etc etc. Expose it for the utter nonsense it is.

TheSteakBakeOfAwesome · 10/10/2018 10:50

If a friend of mine can use, without any sense of how absurd it sounds, the sentence "As a non-binary individual who has given birth to and breastfed three children..." I think anyone can declare themselves non-binary really.

ShineOnHarvestMoon · 10/10/2018 14:19

Grin Grin SteakBake I'd be rolling my eyes at such a statement, friend or no

FekkoTheLawyer · 10/10/2018 15:54

'So that's a woman then'? If she really doent know that then I'm amazed she has babies.

scotsheather · 10/10/2018 16:07

But we ARE all non binary, surely? Tell me if you know someone who conforms to every female stereotype for their entire life (or male for that matter).

donquixotedelamancha · 10/10/2018 17:07

I think Stonewall is in severe danger of forgetting about the abuse & violence - physical and verbal - meted out against women who dare to look a bit butch

They haven't forgotten, they aren't interested. When challenged on this on R4, Ruth Hunt explicitly stated that it is not Stonewall's role to consider women's rights- their role is to advocate for 'trans rights', whatever the cost.

Lweji · 10/10/2018 17:24

That and our own binary MN member (can't remember the order of 0s and 1s)

Sevigny · 27/05/2019 12:21

Just bumping this with an update from Somerville1234.

“I got into the final for the award, but didn’t win. However, my workplace also announced that the next time they run the award they will be opening it up to everyone with a protected characteristic, which is the victory I wanted.
An even bigger victory, that I didn’t expect or anticipate, is that the authentic genderfree identity, and it’s flag 🏁, has exploded across social media and even more importantly real life. I’ve now contacted every company who provide goods or services to my household, updating my details to confirm my genderfree, sex based, identity. Many people respond by saying “oh I think I’m genderfree too! I don’t sense an innate identity either!” Many other genderfree women are reporting the same - brava, all of you!”
