Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary

Don’t want to say too much about the reward on offer - a work thing, with real kudos, let’s leave it there.

But... it’s only open to people who self-identify as transgender or non-binary (or a lot of other words which, having Googled, are synonyms for the same).

Some people don't identify with any gender is one of the descriptors of what non-binary means. And that’s true of me. I don’t identify as female, I just happen to have a female body. I do “present in a feminine way” though. And I’m straight, married, still breastfeeding...

But, I can apply, right? I’m nervous, but fucked off with myself for cowering behind the parapet for this long.

*despite you don't feel gender dysphoria or feel any dissonance with the sex you were born as ^

Gender disphoria/gender dissonance is rejecting societal expectations of gendered behaviour, isn’t it? Leaving aside body disphoria, which is separate.

If trans women are women, trans men are men, then surely women can be trans women and men can be trans men - because we believe it?

Mookatron · 09/10/2018 10:23

It's annoying, because gender non-binary activism and feminism are actually the same argument, but the characteristics usually ascribed to women is that they are always wrong so obviously feminists have got it wrong and the desire to wear a dress is biologically driven Hmm

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 09/10/2018 10:30

Tell that to the Celts, ancient Greeks and Romans. Was Caesar trans?

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 09/10/2018 10:33

I present as an old tarting slap (thank you Upstart Crow) but I identify as a 23 year old gas fitter called Marc. With a c.
Do it OP! Unless you conform absolutely to every gender stereotype about your sex, you wouldn't actually be lying anyway.

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 09/10/2018 10:37

Ironically if you just decided one day you were a gas fitter, and went round interfering with people's gas supplies, Marc would get into a world of shit.

Invisible1234 · 09/10/2018 10:40

If I wasn't non-binary I'd be cleaning the bathroom right now...I'm failing in my womanly duties right now. Go for it!

malaguena · 09/10/2018 10:41

Of course there is transphobia on Mumsnet! It's rare, but someone on this very thread was told they can't be trans if they don't know what 'queer' means. It's disgusting! I suggest you could screenshot and use as evidence to post on Twitter. Or call West Yorkshire police.

jellyfrizz · 09/10/2018 10:43

^^YES! This frustrates me no end.

Noqont · 09/10/2018 10:43

You should go for it op. Why shouldn't you!

ShovingLeopard · 09/10/2018 10:44

I'm obviously way behind the curve on this, but is it legal to promote awards/promotions/special status etc (whatever this opportunity is), on the basis of trans status?

You wouldn't be able to advertise something on the basis that the applicant needs to be Christian, or white, or Asian, or heterosexual, could you? Or could you? Am I missing something? I can't see how it is ok to only offer this to a certain section of society, especially as it doesn't specifically relate to that status.

Happy to be educated!

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 10:45

if so many people on here fall under the trans umbrella then how are so many people SO transphobic and no one has anything to say about it?

Every LOL that was ever LOLed. Point. Head. Sailed.

Because the trans umbrella is a load of old bullshit and we're all non-binary, as the OP hopes to satirise by applying for this opportunity since she and 99% of the population is eligible.

Moominfan · 09/10/2018 10:45

Yea go for it! None binary basically human

pancaketosser · 09/10/2018 10:49

Invisible you're doing it wrong. If you clean the bathroom whilst you are not a woman you get extra gold stars and we can all marvel at how wonderful you are for being capable of using a cloth*.

(*I was going to say toilet brush, but I know that's a sensitive subject on MN)

Lweji · 09/10/2018 10:49

Definitely go.
My choice would be to dress and present as a drag queen.

More seriously, I'd be tempted to ask their definition of non-binary.
I'm great at reading maps and driving. Would that count?

BrownPaperTeddy · 09/10/2018 10:49

I think you can promote opportunities for the purpose of positive discrimination for minority groups can't you? Eg all women short lists

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 09/10/2018 10:50

Ironically if you just decided one day you were a gas fitter, and went round interfering with people's gas supplies, Marc would get into a world of shit.
No Sod They would, because I would accuse them of literally killing me by implying I can't fix their boiler like a cis gas fitter.

MsMcWoodle · 09/10/2018 10:50

But Ughhh - no one will ever abuse self-identity. Will they?

placemats · 09/10/2018 10:50

pancaketosser Grin

TuttoNero · 09/10/2018 10:52

Another vote for doing it. The new roolz say that you are non-binary if you say you are and anybody who challenges you is a bigot.

Chocolala · 09/10/2018 10:55

Wow. Turns out I’m non binary too. I simply don’t identify with the gender norms that I’ve seen listed as what makes a ‘woman’ (according to the various TRA twitter feeds I’ve been following).

BiologyIsReal · 09/10/2018 10:55

I'm the one who puts the bins out in our house, so I am definitely non-binary.

WeeSausage · 09/10/2018 10:55

Somerville, I definitely perceive you as transgender. I suspect other posters here do too. According to Errols C & P from Stonewall, that defintely means you are transgender.
Go for it!

BiologyIsReal · 09/10/2018 10:57

Ughhh reminds me of that announcement years ago (anyone remember?) about trains delayed by snow - it was the wrong sort of snow apparently.

Somerville is the wrong sort of non-binary according to Ughhh.

Makes you wonder if ridicule is a stronger weapon than anger against those prats at Stonewall.

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 10:57

No. In employment, positive discrimination is generally unlawful in the UK. AWS are allowed under narrow and specific legislation which is time limited and only available for the protected characteristic of sex.

Aside from EqA exemptions for particular occupations, positive or negative discrimination in employment recruitment and opportunity are unlawful.

Positive action is lawful but limited and appointments can still only be lawfully made on the basis of merit alone:

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/10/2018 10:57

Im non binary. Today im wearing trousers like a man. 🙄

Go for it, hope you get it.

If pip bunce can get women's awards then you should be eligible for this.
