Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Given that nearly every university student seems to believe TWAW, will sanity ever prevail?

That's it really. They are tomorrow's politicians, teachers, lawyers. I am at a loss to see how we can turn this round.

They don’t. (They just can’t say they don’t. Which is a problem in itself, of course.)

herecomesyourwoman · 07/10/2018 20:12

They don't! Most don't go near the NUS and roll their eyes at them.

RepealtheGRA · 07/10/2018 20:12

What Somerville said. Majority think it’s BS. Especially the boys.

Somerville · 07/10/2018 20:14

Try asking some lads for a university rugby club if they would consider a transwoman as a girlfriend... I did recently and was met with guffaws. They were also indignant on behalf of the Women’s rugby club that a male bodied person wanted to join - said it was dangerous.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 07/10/2018 20:14

They don’t.

And they won’t be young forever.

Do even if they think it doesn’t really matter when they’re all 20, by the time they’re 40 they’ll know it does. Or the female ones will.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/10/2018 20:17

They don't.
I see a lot of taking the piss and winding each other up with 'did you just assume my gender? Bigot!' among the ones I know on Facebook.
And they are genuinely and seriously woke when it comes to anti racism and awareness of different sexualities, they're not ukippy types or anything like that, they just see this as different.

pennydrew · 07/10/2018 20:20

My DD is doing A levels. Trust me, they don’t all think that at all...

HamiltonCork · 07/10/2018 20:22

They really don't. My teens like to say "did you just assume my gender" about every 30 seconds.

Childrenofthestones · 07/10/2018 20:22

Try asking the feminist groups at uni though. From what I have seen they are all on board with it.
The next generation of feminists may be lost to it .

DayMay · 07/10/2018 20:23

The beauty of students attending UK universities from abroad is them laughing their socks off at all of this.

Our government has made themselves and us a laughing stock abroad.

rememberatime · 07/10/2018 20:25

Both my kids believe in being kind and respectful - but they know what a woman is and believe passionately in free speech. One is in his second year at uni (goldsmiths, in fact) and the other is doing a levels.

All their friends get it too.

MaisyPops · 07/10/2018 20:25

I dont think they do all believe it.

DayMay · 07/10/2018 20:25

The non lib feminists don't attend advertised meetings.Wink

NameChangedAgain18 · 07/10/2018 20:25

They don't. On the whole, the students don't believe it. Very few academics believe it. And the senior management don't believe it either.

HamiltonCork · 07/10/2018 20:25

I think that young feminists might be a lost cause but give it 5/10 yrs they'll realise what utter horseshit they've been spouting.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/10/2018 20:28

Feminists at uni have not got the vast range of experience of misogyny and sexism and harassment that comes with age. Things may change as they live life.

UpstartCrow · 07/10/2018 20:31

Most of them don't, the ones that do will realise at some point and become born again radfems.
Of course, they'll have to start from the ground up, but that will be their problem, and they can deal with it like adults.

Hopefully it will be a lesson learned. 'Don't shit where you eat' or some such shizzle.

JennyHolzersGhost · 07/10/2018 20:32

I remember the ‘sex positive’ feminists, before pornification became part of mainstream culture (sex videos, Kardashians, etc). Those women have radically revised their memory of what it was they believed in Grin 🤦‍♀️

OldCrone · 07/10/2018 20:34

What's more worrying is how many elected politicians seem to think TWAW. And they are the ones who are making the laws now.

NameChangedAgain18 · 07/10/2018 20:35

What's more worrying is how many elected politicians seem to think TWAW.

They don't think it. They are just liars, opportunists or cowards.

Needmoresleep · 07/10/2018 20:36

They don’t. They, like everyone, choose not to speak out for fear of being accused of being transphobic. There is real despair at Student Unions obsession with trans-rights, and prioritising this issue over the real issues today’s students face.

There are some real problems on campus. This is the first proper Facebook, internet generation, which is a huge difference. My feel is that there is more social isolation, more anxiety, and a lot more exposure to extreme porn. The experience for some girls is that some boys are seriously and openly misogynist. Some really bad rugby club behaviour, a surpring amount of problems like unreported drink spiking and so on.

Equally this is the generation that saw the flow and ebb of the Oh-Jeremy-Corbyn phenomenon, with no-platforming of Conservative or pro-Brexit voices. No debate is depressingly usual, which does not mean that the average student does not want the NUS or politicians to address their issues. There is sympathy for peers who appear to be confused about either their sexuality or gender. But though most would not say so, I think they would be quite worried about peers who embark on either hormones or surgery without a lot of thought.

DayMay · 07/10/2018 20:38

The oh-Jeremy-Corbyn trend has been and gone too.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 07/10/2018 20:44

I actually worry more about the public sector which has become a manifestation of 1984 group think.

SPOFS · 07/10/2018 20:52

Most students develop critical thinking skills at university, meaning that most see straight through this rubbish.

DayMay · 07/10/2018 20:55

I actually worry more about the public sector which has become a manifestation of 1984 group think.

The power of a mortgage, a lifestyle and social status to maintain.

Who is Gold, who is silver and who is bronze?

I assume, some MPs (Maria Miller and Angela Raynor types) and many public servants are bronze!
