Given that nearly every university student seems to believe TWAW, will sanity ever prevail?

That's it really. They are tomorrow's politicians, teachers, lawyers. I am at a loss to see how we can turn this round.

I can confidently say that pretty much nobody (possibly absolutely nobody, cause I haven‘t met anyone yet who does) in STEM believes that TWAW, let alone that women can have penises or mammals can change sex.
Nobody there has patience for this Pomo crap. There is a reason STEM students are known as particularly bright.

R0wantrees · 07/10/2018 23:53

What's more worrying is how many elected politicians seem to think TWAW. And they are the ones who are making the laws now.

I thinkn the 'trans manifesto' may help to uderstand this:

Trans Manifesto
"In 2014, a group of trans organisations came together to produce a "Trans Manifesto" - a document asking political parties to commit to better equality for trans people. We are pleased that these "asks of political parties" were already items under discussion as part of the latest equalities paper, and were debated, voted on and passed as policy of the entire Liberal Democrat party in Autumn 2014." Actually the comments are really excellent. (Maybe unsurprisingly) Edinburgh students really know their stuff! Some angles I hadnt thought of and some great summaries. .

I also wonder if good old sex will save the day. Most people are heterosexual and will want to mate and have children with someone of the opposite sex. Then those who are gay and bi will also find their preference partner by their sex, whatever you present gender wise sex will ultimately dominate. That’s when I have compassion for trans people because I do think they struggle finding partners because by removing secondary sex characteristics they do send out a confused message to potential sex partners and then if they also have been made infertile it could generationally quickly become a genetic dead end.

I am not suggesting that trans people will not find partners but that they will struggle more than others and have obvious problems reproducing and so as this becomes understood future generations will be more cautious.

IdaBWells · 08/10/2018 07:17

Did you see one of the Edinburgh students used the acronym WERMS (Women Excluding Radical Misogynists) ?

OnlyMakeBelieve · 08/10/2018 07:45

Try asking the feminist groups at uni though. From what I have seen they are all on board with it

Wait until they start work and realise having a vagina and breasts means they're second class and that someone with a penis will always be considered better.

RepealtheGRA · 08/10/2018 07:50

I like WERMs Grin

FekkoTheLawyer · 08/10/2018 08:08

I can't say it - I'm Scottish. Wehhhr-uums.

LittleLebowski · 08/10/2018 08:10

Very cheering comments on that article, I also like WERMsGrin
I think bat-shit bull-shit will always be eventually recognised as such, as long as we're still allowed to call it what it is.

hackmum · 08/10/2018 08:18

The Edinburgh article was a hoot. I feel slightly sorry for the author, who says she is a butch lesbian, being stuck with a name like Daisy, possibly the least butch name in the dictionary of names.

I think some young people go along with this crap because it's easier than arguing about it. It's a fad that will die. And as someone who also has contact with teenagers, I agree that the ones who claim to be "gender non-conforming" or who prefer to be called "ze" do tend to be the ones, sadly, that are troubled in some way - obviously socially awkward or with mental health problems.

Beamur · 08/10/2018 08:18

Student politics has always been a bed of immature, introspective nonsense, where people practised politicking. Unfortunately, social media and the current breakdown of trust in mainstream parties has allowed this to assume a much greater credence than it deserves.
Mature students who seem unable to disengage and then become perpetual students seem to be the worst offenders for not living in the real world.
I think the current trans mania will pass, not everyone buys into it by a very long way, it has become as institutionalised as it has because the majority of people simply haven't noticed yet the shifts in language and policies. Only when it begins to negatively affect people will the language become more nuanced.
On the other hand, if this movement does allow a more appropriate discussion and acceptance of non conformity, that would be welcome.
I think those for whom being seen to be different as a means of attracting attention will find something else to latch onto.

TerfedOff · 08/10/2018 08:25

I love this one:

"No, people are not 'transphobic' for rejecting to stupid badges that put everyone into these scary boxes. It's called not being a herd of bloody cattle. This is Orweillian as hell, and people don't like that for good reason. Added to that, there is NO such thing as 'transphobia' to begin with. Just don't even get me started on the obvious for those of us sane people.... Sex is binary. There is ONLY male and female. They cannot 'become' each other. Two spirit people is a Native American belief, that has nothing whatsoever to do with trans, and natives people's are rightly offended by thestraight white western appropriation of that, you racist gits posing as 'progressive'. Get a clue already. No one likes your stupid cult, thinks you're idiots. Your bullying of everyone is what is real fascism. Everyone is waiting for this stupid trend to die off already and reality and sanity restored. It is also depressing as hell that a lesbian sides with this, when trans ideology is homophobic as hell, and especially towards lesbians, who they are trying to erase. So you have some serious internalised misogyny there as well. There is no such thing as 'cis' either. Everyone is the sex they are born with. Full stop. We are never accepting your oppressive nasty thinking. Get used to it."

What a brilliant rant Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/10/2018 08:28

Gives me hope for the future! Grin

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 08/10/2018 08:32

From the Tab article.

If you're reading this and think that you don’t know any trans or non-binary people in your classes, take a moment to think about your language and your behaviour. It’s far more likely that people simply don’t feel safe being out around you than them not existing.

It’s not about me.

Zeugma · 08/10/2018 09:09

I'm also greatly enjoying the comments on that Edinburgh article.

But, as so often happens, reading the woke interjections (especially from the unfortunately-male-monikered Morgan) I find myself thinking - who's got TIME for this shit??

Seriously, do these people spend their entire lives, their every waking moment, scouring Twatter and every obscure article about pronoun badges at Edinburgh freshers' week ffs, just so they can get involved in endless rantings? I fear they do.

It really doesn't say much about the kind of lives they actually lead. Don't they ever just get utterly exhausted by the sheer effort of being so damn woke? It's honestly like a form of OCD or something.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/10/2018 09:32

There's an increasing problem with students staying in their rooms and not going to lectures.
I think that's how they find time.

NotANotMan · 08/10/2018 09:39

Love that mimmymum has tweeted the op and conveniently ignored the rest of the thread!

Charliethefeminist · 08/10/2018 09:43

Too 😨 d to post the link tho

ContessasGulagSpaDay · 08/10/2018 09:43

I'm trying hard to train my own young humans to not believe the nonsense. DS1 is 7yo and heard me huffing yesterday about men being allowed to say they're women so they can swim on the women's team. I asked him who would win the races and he said (slight paraphrase) "The men will win Mummy, because they're stronger. No, it doesn't matter if they say they're women because they are still stronger". Mouths of babes, mate.

I don't know enough young men/women to know what the state of play is with them; must find some and question them with scary enthusiasm Grin

BesmirchingMotherhood · 08/10/2018 09:51

Mimmymum can be as jubilant as she likes, the earth is still round.

bigKiteFlying · 08/10/2018 10:20

They don't - but I constantly read even on here that they all do.

It's a myth that seems to be gaining traction and helping false comparisons to racism and homophobia usually correlated with older generations or old fashioned thinking.

I suggested he was best if thinking of it as like a religion, you can be polite to those that believe in it whilst refusing to partake

That's a really good way of talking about it.

I struggled to convey this to my older children confused by some school and youth based messages. They are like us apparently agnostics and atheists but have friends who are deeply religious – and not from the same religion so would make perfect sense – thank you.

AuntBeastie · 08/10/2018 13:45

Of course you won’t prevail, you’ve been fighting a losing battle for years and the trajectory will continue that way. Sorry - I know it’s an unwelcome thought. But it’s just the truth, and I think in your hearts you probably know that.

ScienceIsTruth · 08/10/2018 13:49

As an aside, does anyone know if the university of Lincoln had fallen for this crap? They've removed sex (changed it to gender) from their list of protected characteristics, so I'm assuming so.

NotANotMan · 08/10/2018 13:59

Of course you won’t prevail, you’ve been fighting a losing battle for years and the trajectory will continue that way

Ah bless Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/10/2018 14:08

Bit of reading for you, Aunt Beastie.

Transgenderism will prevail and the price of tulip bulbs can only keep going up.
