Amnesty has "jumped the shark"

Apologies for the flippant thread title, just wanted you all to look this way for a second.

Amnesty's sentence on why GRA reformation is important:

Transwomen are suffering violence and abuse as women and because they are trans. Over a quarter of trans people experience domestic violence and two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in England and Wales

twitter.com/AmnestyUK/status/1046740263408979969

As lots of others point out, the whole article is a mess. But this statement is the most appalling and gaslighting of all.

Lots of others are saying it better than I could: twitter.com/ThrupennyBit/status/1047252878321246208

To hijack the horror of two women being killed in England and Wales a week to make it look like the figure is actually about transwomen is monstrous misogyny, utterly unethical and dangerous propaganda

Many have voiced growing concerns about Amnesty for a while:- the organisation's questionable stance on prostitution; the invitation of Shon Faye to host 'Women Making History' earlier this year.

But for me, the fact that someone felt that it was OK to make this specific and deliberate conflation of two different issues, and their attempt to use the murder of females to 'stand in for' and represent and inflate the dangers to men who want to be women, is incredibly disturbing.

WTF happened to Amnesty?

It's interesting, too, isn't it, that The Jo Cox Foundation decided not to invoke the 2010 Equality Act exemptions, and thus had several 'transwomen' graduating from its Women In Leadership Programme

What disgusting statement from Amnesty.

Just imaging the thought process of the writer makes me feel nauseous.
Bet they really chuckled about abusing women murder victims for men's gain.

pombear · 06/10/2018 23:55

Just going to pop this to the top of the threads for a second again. Because I'm still gobsmacked by what they did.

And just for Sciencelover1 - it's in plain English and no politics.

Women are killed every week. 2 on average per week. Not transwomen. Women.

Someone writing for Amnesty thought it was a good idea to take the number of females murdered each week and make it all about transwomen.

The abuse and murder of transwomen is wrong.

But hijacking the number of women murdered and making that number all about transwomen?

These are different issues. Leave murdered women alone. Campaign for them separately. What on earth are you doing?

In my teens and twenties, Amnesty was an organisation I admired.

Now I can only see it as an organisation that's lost its way.

I can see the vomit inducing bit about the GRA, but not the bit about the murder stats Confused

You need to read the article that's linked:
Under Point No 4: Transwomen are women and there is no risk to single sex services
You might have heard discussions on the media and social media trying to tip trans rights against women’s rights. These discussions are informed by prejudice and misinformation. Trans women are women and trans men are men. Making the process to obtain legal gender recognition easier and respectful of human rights will only improve the lives of trans people, it will not affect anyone else.

Gender non-conforming people suffer under patriarchal social norms as much as cis women (cis = non trans). Trans women are suffering violence and abuse as women and because they are trans. Over a quarter of trans people experience domestic violence and two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in England and Wales.

Thanks for this. It's made me very sad, I've been an amnesty supporter for many years but I have no choice now but to cancel my dd.

I've written a clear email to them about why I've chosen to do so but I expect it will fall on deaf ears.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 07/10/2018 06:12

These discussions are informed by prejudice and misinformation. Trans women are women and trans men are men

I don't know how they can type that with a straight face. The juxtaposition of those two sentences

What about this story, which suggests that the statistics being posted here are inaccurate

And what about this article that shows that it is even worse. The BBC actually found it was 48% of trans prisoners are sex offenders not 41% but then did everything to try and sweep it under the carpet. So much for "Reality Check".

Thank you R0wantrees for directing me here. My subscription to Amnesty will be cancelled tonight. Anyone got any suggestions for a good woman-supporting charity that I can switch my payment to? Thanks!
