Amnesty has "jumped the shark"

Apologies for the flippant thread title, just wanted you all to look this way for a second.

Amnesty's sentence on why GRA reformation is important:

Transwomen are suffering violence and abuse as women and because they are trans. Over a quarter of trans people experience domestic violence and two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in England and Wales

twitter.com/AmnestyUK/status/1046740263408979969

As lots of others point out, the whole article is a mess. But this statement is the most appalling and gaslighting of all.

Lots of others are saying it better than I could: twitter.com/ThrupennyBit/status/1047252878321246208

To hijack the horror of two women being killed in England and Wales a week to make it look like the figure is actually about transwomen is monstrous misogyny, utterly unethical and dangerous propaganda

Many have voiced growing concerns about Amnesty for a while:- the organisation's questionable stance on prostitution; the invitation of Shon Faye to host 'Women Making History' earlier this year.

But for me, the fact that someone felt that it was OK to make this specific and deliberate conflation of two different issues, and their attempt to use the murder of females to 'stand in for' and represent and inflate the dangers to men who want to be women, is incredibly disturbing.

WTF happened to Amnesty?

So fucking glad I stopped my D/D to Amnesty last year, they are no friend to women imao.

Babdoc · 03/10/2018 20:16

I stopped donating to them years ago when I found their chief was pulling a £250,000 salary. That’s a hell of a lot of diverted donations.
The disgusting attitude to prostitution, and now this deliberate misuse of figures on violence against women simply confirms that I was right.

TheWholeHog · 03/10/2018 20:16

Amnesty jumped the shark a long time ago. This just further underlines that they’re now a Men’s Rights organization.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 03/10/2018 20:17

Amnesty has been a disgrace for a while. But that sentence is vile.

I can't articulate the words to express my feelings towards them. Best I can come up with is fucking, misogynist bastards.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/10/2018 20:21

Amnesty jumped the shark when they came out as pro sex industry, so this is more of the same.

I used to support them, but no more. See how well they do if women withdraw our support.

Sportsnight · 03/10/2018 20:22

Nice. I think it’s time to cancel my dd to them.

OpalIridescence · 03/10/2018 20:23

Yep, Amnesty have used the murders of women to prop up a movement led by misogynistic men.

This shows that nothing is offlimits.

That is two women per week killed and who in death are being used as nothing more than twisted statistics.

I don't know, if we keep allowing this shit, keep taking a polite step backward then we are going to start deserving it.

Amnesty - shame on you

pombear · 03/10/2018 20:23

Thanks Terry Bab Hog and Hawk - I realise I was going softly softly on this one. I agree, shark-jumped a while ago, but this stood out to me as so explicitly wrong, disturbingly explicit.

How can anyone sit down and merge together in an article the murders of females every week, with the violence to trans people.

They are two very different things -both should be campaigned against and denounced, but they are not the same.

This way madness lies.

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/10/2018 20:25

Absolutely disgraceful

NopeNi · 03/10/2018 20:27

I don't get it. Do they think two transwomen are killed a week in the U.K.? Have they got a bit confused?

OpalIridescence · 03/10/2018 20:28

I hope Karen Ingala Smith goes nuclear with this.

Popchyk · 03/10/2018 20:36

Utterly dishonest.

And not surprising from that shower of wankers.

Funny how these organisations who are hand wringing about the plight of men who identify as women ARE DOING PRECISELY NOTHING TO HELP THEM.

Where are the schemes to help transgender people into jobs? What about social isolation? Where are the homeless shelters for transgender people? Where are the suicide crisis teams to help transgender people?

Stonewall and Amnesty haven't lifted a finger.

OpalIridescence · 03/10/2018 20:39

They are not confused, they know exactly what they are doing.

The claims of transwomen being so vulnerable to violence need propping up.

So they have helped themselves to the disgraceful fact that two women a week are murdered.

The actual point about these murders is that victim is female. People like Karen 'count' them. To show they matter, that they existed and that they still should exist.

NopeNi · 03/10/2018 20:42

It just doesn't make sense - it doesn't flow logically. Why even use the two women stat?

AngryAttackKittens · 03/10/2018 20:45

Because if they stated that in the last few years in the UK there have been more transwomen murderers than there have been murder victims that wouldn't work very well as a means of manipulating public opinion.

seafret · 03/10/2018 20:46

Utter complete fucking lying bastards.

Dr Meg John Barker has a retweet on there about meeting them a few days ago so yeah, they jumped a long long time ago :(

OpalIridescence · 03/10/2018 20:48

Well, if trans women are women then they are included in that stat. Add in the transphobia they face and that gives them both angles.

Therefore they are the most vulnerable, therefore any one raising an objection to anything they want/ say/ take is a vile bigot ready for the gulag.

I notice Karen Ingala Smith has put a statement about this with correct figures onto her site Counting Dead Women.

The fact that trans people are not murdered at anything like the rate of women should surely be a cause to celebrate?

What a strange world we live in that the truth ,in this case, is an inconvenience to the narrative.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/10/2018 20:50

Because soon it will be quoted as a “fact” for the oppression of trans people.

There’s value to knowing about violence to trans women, I don’t doubt there’s relationships where trans women suffer violence and emotional abuse (from men) but to weave in stats for murdered women is utterly dishonest and simply furthers the agenda of self absorbed mysogonists.

SPOFS · 03/10/2018 20:50

In the U.K., there are more trans women murderers than there are trans women that have been murdered.

Amnesty have simply become another men's rights organization piggy-backing on the hard work of feminists.

Molokonono · 03/10/2018 20:54

I hope Karen Ingala Smith goes nuclear with this

She has simply stated the facts.

Women are perpetrators of homicide at 18% lower rates than we are victims.
Males are perpetrators of homicide at 8% greater rates than they are victims.
Trans people are perpetrators of homicide at 71% greater rates than they are victims.

FloralBunting · 03/10/2018 20:55

I guess that particular 2 women a week stat was getting traction, so it was time to use it for The Cause.

Remember, women are really only useful if they are props to getting men what they want.

Popchyk · 03/10/2018 20:56

It is precisely why the word woman is so important.

If we don't have a word for women, then how do we convey what happens to us? Just how?

The 2 women murdered by men per week statistic becomes "some people who may be male or female are murdered by other people who may be male or female".

How do you determine the reality of what has actually happened? How can you identify patterns? You can't. There is no language available to describe it.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/10/2018 20:57

5th rule of misogyny: WATM! Women and Feminism must be useful to men or they are worthless.

Even murdered women.

pombear · 03/10/2018 20:57

Karen in case you ever visit these parts, you are fucking awesome.

We're just here over in this corner shining sunlight on the things that need seeing by others who might not be seeing them.

OP posts:
OpalIridescence · 03/10/2018 20:59

Thank you Molokonono, I'm glad she has done that. Just wish we didn't live in a post - fact world.
