Amnesty has "jumped the shark"

Apologies for the flippant thread title, just wanted you all to look this way for a second.

Amnesty's sentence on why GRA reformation is important:

Transwomen are suffering violence and abuse as women and because they are trans. Over a quarter of trans people experience domestic violence and two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in England and Wales

twitter.com/AmnestyUK/status/1046740263408979969

As lots of others point out, the whole article is a mess. But this statement is the most appalling and gaslighting of all.

Lots of others are saying it better than I could: twitter.com/ThrupennyBit/status/1047252878321246208

To hijack the horror of two women being killed in England and Wales a week to make it look like the figure is actually about transwomen is monstrous misogyny, utterly unethical and dangerous propaganda

Many have voiced growing concerns about Amnesty for a while:- the organisation's questionable stance on prostitution; the invitation of Shon Faye to host 'Women Making History' earlier this year.

But for me, the fact that someone felt that it was OK to make this specific and deliberate conflation of two different issues, and their attempt to use the murder of females to 'stand in for' and represent and inflate the dangers to men who want to be women, is incredibly disturbing.

WTF happened to Amnesty?

OP posts:
AngryAttackKittens · 04/10/2018 00:23

It makes me so angry when I think of my idealistic youthful support for them. They've taken that devotion and used it to hurt people, mostly women and girls.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/10/2018 01:14

Women being murdered by their partners
and Amnesty twists this to gain sympathy for transwomen.
Dishonest shits

If transwomen genuinely are being murdered at a high rate, then publish the statistics - the last figure I read was absolutely tiny, btw

Such blatant distortion by Amnesty and the TRAs makes me suspect that "the most persecuted group ever" may even be in less danger than women Hmm

multivac · 04/10/2018 01:46

Once again, I feel the need to point out that there is a word for a system that categorises people into 'those who 'identify with the gender they were assigned at birth', and those who don't. It's BINARY. Why do (some) gender nonconforming individuals want a binary system so passionately?

DuckingGoodPJs · 04/10/2018 04:37

They certainly are 'Travesty International' now, having already jumped the shark on prostitution. Now this shit.

As far as I am aware, all the transwomen homicide victims were either killed by 'regular men', or other transwomen/male cross-dressers. Most victim/perp relationships were non-intimates, some were associates, some 'clients', etc.

Whereas over 50% (towards two-thirds) of women are killed by current/former male partners, and up to about three quarters of female victims would be DV victims. Of the women who kill male partners, many are doing it in self-defence (killing the abusive male partner).

It is comparing apples and oranges, even if the apple identified as an orange. Just more disrespect and erasure for women.

Shame on you Travesty International.

FurryDice · 04/10/2018 04:41

Fucking hell. This makes me very sad.

I no longer know who is on my side, where ‘my side’ simply means not trying to erode the rights of biologically born women and at the same time respecting the rights of others to be who they want to be - but not at our expense.

I know that sentence is a fucking mess but so is all of this shit.

I despair.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 04/10/2018 06:31

I think it's very timely to bump this thread.

I think it's timely to remind people what powerful, respected charities are saying

Let's not forget they chose Shon Faye to host their 'Making Women History' (sic) event.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 04/10/2018 06:37

It's really disgusting for Amnesty to lie in this way. The whole push for self Id rests on the guilt-tripping of women - that trans people are the biggest victims and murder and are attempting suicide in large numbers. NOT TRUE

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 04/10/2018 06:42

The Amnesty thread is beautiful

Thanks for starting this thread pombear. I am not on Twitter

AngryAttackKittens · 04/10/2018 06:47

Indeed, thanks pombear, I mostly ignore Twitter so wouldn't have noticed this otherwise.

Roystonv · 04/10/2018 06:50

I am just flabbergasted by this, am a regular reader of all the gra/transgender posts and thought I seen it all but this has shocked me to the core as a) had no idea that amnesty had lost their credibility and b) can't believe such a huge organisation would produce such twisted nonsense.

SophoclesTheFox · 04/10/2018 07:01

I swore off Amnesty when they decided a few years back to chuck women under the bus with that utter nonsense of a pimp's charter they introduced about choosey choice sexy fun times being the route to empowerment for women in developing countries. I can't remember who said it, but: if a women is hungry, you put food in her mouth, not your dick.

I'm not actually even that surprised by this, sadly. Like you say, they jumped the shark a long time ago and the leadership is utterly woeful on women's rights.

MaybeDoctor · 04/10/2018 07:18

When I was a young woman in my early 20s, I expressed an interest in Amnesty’s letter-writing scheme. The idea was that you would write a letter on behalf of someone suffering a human rights abuse.

The first case they wanted me to plead clemency for was a man on Death Row in the U.S.A. (albeit with some learning disabilities) who had raped and murdered an elderly woman after he had broken into her home. I just could not do it.

In the end I threw the papers away and left the scheme. However, that example has since stopped every Amnesty door-stop charity canvasser in their tracks.

LetticeFortescue · 04/10/2018 07:40

Interesting how the emphasis from TRAs and their supporters is always on the poor men who decide to live as women, and not on women who decide to live as men. I assume transmen are also at risk of DV because the people around them will see them as women. I also suspect a lot of transmen have moved to that situation because of male domestic abuse they have witnessed or experienced.
But it's all about the men, always

R0wantrees · 04/10/2018 07:41

Amnesty on current GRA,

"A spouse can also veto the whole process if they don’t agree with it, which can be used to abuse and control a trans person."

Sarah Ditum,
"Also @ AmnestyUK can do one talking about the "marriage veto" as a tool of coercive control. Coercive control is overwhelmingly a form of male violence. Most married (i.e. older) transitioners are straight males. Currently, their wives can dissolve the marriage – not veto the GRC.

I mean, Amnesty is saying here that males who fundamentally alter the terms of the marriage contract by legally changing their sex marker have a human right to keep a woman as their wife, whatever she thinks about it all. Wtf."

Amnesty has "jumped the shark"
IStillMissBlockbuster · 04/10/2018 08:23

Holy fuck what are Amnesty doing? This is disgusting and I hope they get raked over the coals for it. Who is pushing this agenda in Amnesty?

deepwatersolo · 04/10/2018 08:24

I mean, Amnesty is saying here that males who fundamentally alter the terms of the marriage contract by legally changing their sex marker have a human right to keep a woman as their wife, whatever she thinks about it all. Wtf.

What is happening !?! Who has the clout to subvert Amnesty International to the point where it tramples all over women, uses the violence against them as props and campaigns to disenfranchise women, in order to do push the agenda of some males in dresses through?!?

Guardian today, 'Charities need to stop slide in public trust warns regulator
Groups risking censure, says Charity Commission, citing aggressive fundraising and betrayal of charitable focus'

(extract)
"Registered charities may not survive unless they behave with greater selflessness and stop the slide in public trust, Tina Stowell, chair of the Charity Commission is warning.

Lady Stowell, a former Conservative minister, is to set out a tougher stance over the regulation of the £74bn-a-year sector after a string of scandals, including the collapse of Kids Company in 2015, and the sexual exploitation in Haiti by a senior Oxfam worker, which emerged in 2018.

The UK’s 168,000 registered charities face censure unless they show they are “a living example of charitable purpose”, she will say on Thursday.

In a speech that also attempts to draw a line under criticism of the regulator’s own effectiveness, Stowell will warn that the “concept of charity” is under threat." (continues)

WrongKindOfFace · 04/10/2018 08:27

Amnesty are a bunch of abuse and prostitution supporting pricks. I expect no better from them.

Swannykazoo · 04/10/2018 08:30

Absolutely disgraceful. I have no other words

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/10/2018 08:40

Amnesty do not see women as full human beings >

Their work is for real people aka those with dicks

Has been for a while

Mumfun · 04/10/2018 08:48

Absolutely disgusted with them. They are also arguing that it is important for refugees to have access to single sex toilets for safety (which it is) And then for self ID in the UK so that refugee women in the UK and all other women are at risk from male sexual predators. Twisted madness!

BeyondAdultHumanFemale · 04/10/2018 08:49

I know two of those two women a week.

One murdered by her partner and dumped in a field, her body rolled up in a carpet. Glad to say he's dead - he killed himself while awaiting trial.
The other stabbed multiple times by her partner who had been sexually threatening to me before. He's in prison.

Both were female, both were killed by males.

Jean Hatchet Rides For Murdered Women:
"I want to raise money to help victims of domestic violence. This money will go to Wearside Women In Need who face the closure of all 4 of their women's refuges because of a planned withdrawal of funding by Sunderland Council. Women will die as a result of that decision. We must save the women in Sunderland from men who will murder them.

At first my idea was really simple. I was riding along by the coast a couple of days ago and in my head thinking, as I often do, how many women are murdered as a result of domestic violence every year. How lucky I am to be riding my bike. Free. No one to tell me not to. Not any more.

This is not so for many women. Some women are with men who would smash their bike when they returned. Some women are with men who would call them too stupid, too fat, too selfish, too old, too useless to be doing something so simple and free as riding a bike. Some women can no longer ride a bike because they are dead. A man who they thought loved them, killed them."

"I’m writing to let you know that I’ve raised your concerns regarding Mermaids UK, one of the organisations we link to on our Gender and autism page, with a number of teams within the National Autistic Society. In light of the concerns raised in your message, and of other feedback that we have received, we have decided to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website, while we take the time to consult with relevant professionals and to reconsider which organisations we wish to place links to on our website.

As such, our Web Team are working to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website as soon as possible.
