Fabulous article. Well done to her

OldCrone · 01/10/2018 17:20

Powerful people you say, I see politicians who are powerless.
Many can't express their opinion in public.

Can you explain this comment? Why can't they express their opinion? And they are not powerless, they are the people who have the power to vote in parliament whether or not to change laws.

AdultHumanFemaleBirdsEye · 01/10/2018 17:28

Powerful - Kate Hoey, Caroline Flint and Jacob Rees-Mogg.

They retain their voice and vote.

TimeLady · 01/10/2018 17:35

Even more powerful? Stephen Whittle (Press for Change) and Ruth Hunt (Stonewall)

AdultHumanFemaleBirdsEye · 01/10/2018 17:36

I wonder if we could get Jeremy Kyle into parliament and question the TWAW chanting MPs prior to a lie detector test.

To be in good health and state something we all know is not true is gaslighting, the pressure to state such an obvious public lie and go through with it, means these people are powerless.

I don't see why it means they are powerless. Doesn't it just mean they're liars? Are you saying they are powerless because they're too scared to state the truth? If so, what are they scared of?

Floisme · 01/10/2018 17:48

I think I get where you're coming from AdultHumanFemale but I struggle to feel much sympathy, especially for the cabinet members who take the status and the salary and the ministerial car but who won't speak out, unless it's to whisper in James Kirkup's ear.

FlowersAndHerts · 01/10/2018 17:57

I thought Lucy's article was great. I noticed Posie had replied in the comments section in The Times. It was something about being doxed. It seems to have been deleted. Does anyone know why? Or am I mistaken?

AdultHumanFemaleBirdsEye · 01/10/2018 17:57

what are they scared of?

All the things people on here are scared of, stating the truth out in public.

Being laughed at, death threats, loss of status, no more income and friends, TRA going after your family like they are the Parker family.

They have broken the contract and I am happy for this to follow them into the next election.

Igneococcus · 01/10/2018 18:02

I saw Posie's post too flowers don't know why it was deleted.

I'm pretty sure MPs get all sorts of threats all the time from all sorts of unhinged people. It doesn't normally stop them from holding opinions which are unpopular with some people and voicing those opinions. What is different about the trans issue which stops them from speaking out?

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 01/10/2018 18:26

Excellent piece by Lucy, and another good piece on the Guides situation.

Aye. As an old radical lesbian feminist I never thought I'd see the day. I used to be a Guardian subscriber, but cancelled after realising how cowardly and biased they were against women and girls. Today I finally cracked and signed up for a 3 month subscription with the Times.

BeyondAdultHumanFemale · 01/10/2018 18:35

I wonder if posie got her own comment withdrawn - police may have advised her not to say xyz (I didn't see the post, so this is just a guess)

FlowersAndHerts · 01/10/2018 18:46

Beyond Yes, that would make sense. She's certainly got a lot of support among Times subscribers as well.

VickyEadie · 01/10/2018 18:49

I'm seriously wondering what hold these guys have, that no one is seeing an openly GC stance as a vote winner.

Ah, but as we know, ALL three of the main parties are TWAW parties. It's clearly not seen as a cote-loser because of this.

VickyEadie · 01/10/2018 18:49

vote-loser, ffs!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/10/2018 19:10

I'm sure it's been said before, but on the centenary of the first votes for women in this country, they've managed to find a way to effectively disenfranchise many women.

Indeed so.

Flooffloof · 01/10/2018 19:28

Incidentally, I notice that the MP for Leeds Central (I believe the Civic Hall is a city centre building?) is Hilary Benn. Has he had anything to say?

Yes, I emailed him and got a well thought out email. Mentioning gay history and stunning and brave (but not in those words) and how he agrees with self id.

PurpleCrowbar · 01/10/2018 19:32

But that's what is honestly puzzling me, VickyEadie.

If I were a backbench mp with an eye to the main chance, I'd have clocked by now that raising concerns would be a great way to get noticed. I'm just bemused that none of the buggers has gone a bit rogue.

Floisme · 01/10/2018 19:32

If he''s conflating gay rights and self ID then I question how much thinking he's done. Good to know where women stand with him though,

VickyEadie · 01/10/2018 19:32

They've all got the same briefing - bear in mind it's probably his PA (or whatever they call them) writing it using the briefing.

TimeLady · 01/10/2018 19:33

flooffloof

Seriously? Have they put something in the HoC water?

It's surprising from the Tories, I'll grant you. But Labour MPs are all shit-scared of being de-selected.
