Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The City of London consultation didn’t go quite as they hoped...

Minutes of their meeting discussing it here and the two relevant pages attached as screen grabs.

They had 15k odd people fill it out, and in view of that are going to get professional analysis. I don’t think it’s because of the numbers, it’s because they didn’t get to sneak it through without anyone noticing. It’s interesting that they weren’t going to do this in the first place.

They are going to do an equality impact assesment (something they said they wouldn’t to me on the phone which they then backtracked slightly on via email).

They misrepresent EA 2010 saying you can’t discriminate against transsexuals. Now of course you can’t discriminate, but you can exclude them if proportionate/legitimate.

They do accept that sex based protections are a thing.

They have decided not to report to members until after the government publishes the results of their own consultation.

So the people with a vested interest in the City of London thought they’d get away with sneaking this through without it being noticed. ManFriday fought this super hard, and will continue to ensure that women and girls are protected properly in any policy the city enacts. I wonder if they wish they’d removed the consultation and written it properly in plain English like we asked now Grin

Fantastic news! Well done Sweary and the fellow ManFriday chaps Grin

I wonder what the professional analysts will make of the ... um ... 'design' ... of this survey Hmm

Sparkyduchess · 30/09/2018 11:09

Brilliantly done!

As an aside, the picture of you in your pink swimming cap and towel INSTANTLY peaktransed all of my US colleagues - as soon as I explained that despite what their eyes were telling them, you were the blokiest of blokes just because you said so they got it ❤️

Knicknackpaddyflak · 30/09/2018 11:12

Well done Sweary

If they need a major protest to take this seriously please do sign me up. Idiots.

HandsOffMyRights · 30/09/2018 11:16

Thank you for your incredible work. I filled in the alternative, rational, transparent survey too.

miketv · 30/09/2018 11:17

Well done @SwearyG - it was great talking to you about it on Friday.

R0wantrees · 30/09/2018 11:32

No idea, but isn't the population of London something like 50% born overseas? Wouldn't expect in a multicultural city like London to have 100% responses from British nationals.

One would hope that any analysis would in the first instance identify the massive issues in the survey itself.

My understanding is that there was noaudio version, no braile version, no easy read option, no paper option, not the usual range of versions in different languages.

It was promoted by the City of London Corp almost exclusively on Twitter.

Did they ever actively attempt to contact those using the services, ponds, places or working there? Anything advertising the existance of the survey and policy intentions at the Hampstead Ponds and if so was it accessible?

Which groups were prioritised by the City of London's strategy? Hmm

Interestingly the complaints leaflet demonstrates the standard range of accessible options which were rather absent in the survey!

There were many issues with the survey, discussed on the thread:

SlimDogMillionaire · 30/09/2018 11:53

That's a bit of a result I'd say?

'only' 70% wtf?
Mostly white but not all British? wtf again?

Manderleyagain · 30/09/2018 12:00

In the first screen grab it says the questionnaire had at least 31 000 respondents then in the second only 15 000. Have I misunderstood?

Why haven't private eye been following EL and all this for their rotten boroughs. I haven't had my eye on this London stuff but if any eye readers know the ins and outs of this please contact them. I can't quite get why they are so quiet on this whole issue. I'm planing to contact them about another aspect of the broader issue and don't want to over do it.

Cuntysnark · 30/09/2018 12:06

Well done. I filled it out, as recommended here. You are doing fabulous work ( and rocked on Friday night!)

BeUpStanding · 30/09/2018 12:10

Great result! Although I am also shocked that they weren't originally intending to have the results professionally analysed. What kind of tin-pot operation are they running?!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 30/09/2018 12:26

I'm so proud of the Man Friday women. Thank you for highlighting this issue. I filled in the consultation. Every voice counts.

R0wantrees · 30/09/2018 12:36

What kind of tin-pot operation are they running?!

BeUP Important question and I think any analysis of the survey itself, regardless of the results it garnered may well ask the same.

MsBeaujangles · 30/09/2018 12:37

I think a high proportion of the 30% non British could be TRAs from the USA.
A prominent US based TRA was promoting the consultation on Twitter and I think I recall a thread at the time where posters were predicting a high number of responses from the US.

HumberElla · 30/09/2018 12:56

Well done Man Friday, I was cheering you on during the protests! Having very fond memories of swimming there years ago I’m delighted the consultation was more widely exposed.

MipMipMip · 30/09/2018 13:07

I was feeling guilty about filling it in as I'm not London based. After seeing 14% trans (and presumably equivalent allies) then it is very obviously not representative so I feel guilt no more. Should have completed 10 times plus.

The screen shots mentions 8% did not give a gender. I can't remember what I put but there is a fair chance some of those will be GC protesting at the use of gender, not sex. Seems to be getting lumped in with trans though. Sad

Fallingirl · 30/09/2018 13:42

I wonder what the professional analysts will make of the ... um ... 'design' ... of this survey hmm

Maybe Edward Lord will get his partner, Meg John Barker, who is a professional researcher, to do the analysis...

Popchyk · 30/09/2018 13:44

I'm guessing that a group like Stonewall will provide the professional analysts.

And, bingo, the results will be as they'd hoped after all.

WokerThanWoke · 30/09/2018 13:48

Fallin I've been wondering which woke organisation they will get in, too.

WokerThanWoke · 30/09/2018 13:49

Cut off and x-post with Popchyk.

HermioneWeasley · 30/09/2018 13:50

Amazing work Man Friday crew! Thank you

Sarahconnor1 · 30/09/2018 13:51

I'm guessing that a group like Stonewall will provide the professional analysts.

That would be my worry as well but I wonder if an FOI request would allow the analyse to be fact checked?

HermioneWeasley · 30/09/2018 13:51

14% trans - that’s hugely disproportionate. Just shows how’s its being “gamed”

SwearyG · 30/09/2018 13:52

I think maybe another FOI request to find out who they appoint might be in order. Or maybe I’ll ask my ward member.
