I am absolutely not going to slate PP who remained calm and resolute under pressure in an extremely biased environment.
However I think her argument needs a bit of careful crafting which acknowledges empathy etc, that people have been through a difficult journey, that in some cases like India’s reassignment surgery may be the best option, but there are limits to what that can achieve.
Recognising that someone has a psychological condition which makes them ‘feel’ they have the wrong body is not the same as actually having the wrong body.
We have to acknowledge that this difficult surgery doesn’t give you an actual woman’s body. (And point out how many keep their penises).
We need to give people like India a 3rd category which acknowledges their birth sex but also their current status. And I guess we need to work out how to achieve trans facilities etc.
I realise that many transwomen don’t want to compromise.
I think Posie needs to engage a bit more with the distress experienced by people like India while at the same time staying resolute that this must not impinge on female rights & take away our identity.
She was fab but just needs to work on the empathy, make some more eye contact and say look I acknowledge, respect & understand all that you have been through but you also have to understand the limits of your surgery. Sadly, women in the media (I am one) still need to come across as ‘nice’ to be effective.
