Ocado boycott after support of Primesight action

On discovering today that Ocado are continuing to use Primesight after they removed Standing For Women's billboard, thereby showing they have no respect for women or our rights, I have emailed them to tell them that I will no longer shop with them as they support misogyny. I'm just wondering how many others have done the same and hoping this thread gets picked up by twitter and/or the press.

I'm genuinely surprised they haven't put a statement out yet. What's that about?
I don't use them, too rich for my blood, but I'm heartened to see so many of you willing to inconvenience yourselves to make an important point.
Those of you who are waiting before you cancel - I don't think you're going to get much of a response from them tbh...

Molokonono · 27/09/2018 06:42

Ocado have had two sleeps to think about this.

Shame on them.

MoggyP · 27/09/2018 06:55

Bottom line, which will go down badly in this topic, is at the level of response will match the level of the campaign as it seems from the Ocado pov.

People here are latching on to this, but remember the comments about this topic being an echo chamber? A small number of like-minded posters here might not be enough to be even slightly worrying, compared to the total customer base.

I think some of the self-congratulation I've seen is premature, and a reminder that this topic isn't representative of MN, and MN isn't representative of the wider population.

And no, - before the same topic-standard insult is posted, I am not posting this to silence some women. But to have at least one post every now and again from a different angle.

Molokonono · 27/09/2018 07:20

Ocado have 1.2% of the market.

They cannot afford to chuck it away.

Also...the hits on this section of the forum have skyrocketed.

Do not think there are not thousands of lurkers going 'what the fuck?'

AbsintheFriends · 27/09/2018 07:23

Fair enough Moggy. But for me the bottom line is about principles and conscience which is why I'm boycotting.

It's a matter of individual choice not to spend money with brands whose values you find unacceptable. I doubt that Nestle are feeling a dent from my loss of custom, but for me buying their products is out of the question. Ocado have now joined that category.

I daresay they'll survive but their brand values are definitely tainted, and whichever way you look at it, that's not good business practice.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/09/2018 07:24

maybe ocado will weather it out, but, it has been brought to their attention. they have had to think about it. several customer services people have had to think why suddenly there are lots of cancellations, they will tell their mates and thier spouses... etc.

maybe it will not be a massive win in the end, but more people know about it. more people will be thinking about it. more people will be receptive when something else happens.

QueenYnci · 27/09/2018 07:24

Maybe (although they seem pretty worried).

It's not all about the effectiveness of the boycott though. Why would I continue to spend substantial amounts of money with a company that has no respect for me as a woman?

We might just be a few customers to them, but equally they're just a supermarket to me. I can use another one.

I think they need us more than we need them.

charlestonchaplin · 27/09/2018 07:24

I think many people are not aware of the proposed changes to the law and the consequences if the law does change. And many will not care if they think they and their loved ones will be unaffected. I think we need to ensure a lot more of the population know what's going on, including disabusing them of the notion of transwomen being sad creatures who've castrated themselves in a desperate attempt to be women. We know that the majority choose to retain their fully functioning penises.

It is also about not allowing men with nefarious motives into women's spaces. If people then decide, having been made aware of this information, that they don't care whether the law changes or whether private companies and public bodies change their policies, then at least they will have made an informed choice. Going by comments on newspaper articles I don't think people are as uncaring as MoggyP does.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 27/09/2018 07:26

It's OK, I shop at Asda 😂
But I'd totally be boycotting Ocado if I could afford it. Arses.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 27/09/2018 07:31

Absinthe, I agree. I’m also a Nestle boycotter and won’t shop with Ocado again until they have clarified their stance. I’m not one of life’s big spenders - trying to step off that treadmill by buying less but better quality. I won’t make much of a dent on my own but it’s the principle.

Turph · 27/09/2018 07:34

MoggyP
That's a fair comment and a reminder that a nightmare week for Ocado's customer service team doesn't necessarily equate to a real impact on their bottom line.
I'd advise anyone who has cancelled to post that on their social media or at least discuss it with some friends.
Ocado didn't have to make any comment at all - and Primesight are harder to influence. But comment they did - and snarky too. Their prissy comment being relieved about Primesight silencing the evil women is why they are facing this.
Ironically it's one person's tweet, but all this time later there is still no statement. Women are being fobbed off online and over the phone. The failure to deal with the problem is worse that the original tweet.
I think there's little chance Ocado will now reply in the way posters here want them to. In fact there's a good chance they won't reply at all.

Gentlygently · 27/09/2018 07:40

Seriously, keep phoning them up. I will phone again this morning.

Needmoresleep · 27/09/2018 07:51

Moggy, yes. However Ocado were quick to tweet their wokemess when the dear Dr and a few of his mates contacted them. Even though it was quite likely they were not customers.

But no response when adult human female customers get in touch.

Their loyalties?

Carriemac · 27/09/2018 07:54

I’ve posted on their facebook reviews too

Tanith · 27/09/2018 07:54

That's a fair comment and a reminder that a nightmare week for Ocado's customer service team doesn't necessarily equate to a real impact on their bottom line.

Given what they actually did (check out a complaint with a 3rd party and take their word for it), a nightmare week to make them think more carefully next time is quite enough, I think.

It's a shame they haven't put out a statement, though. As has been stated, many of us are long-standing customers who were there right at the start.
It'll say a great deal if they repay all that loyalty by ignoring us, to say nothing of the message it'll give to women in general ("Just ignore them; they'll soon forget about it")

WomanAKAAdultHumanFemale · 27/09/2018 07:59

("Just ignore them; they'll soon forget about it")

I suspect that that is what they will do. Which is why I will continue to contact them until I receive a satisfactory response.

Procrastinator1 · 27/09/2018 07:59

I don't think primesite who, with the good doctor and his followers are responsible for this, have made a statement.
Another of their clients is facing the wrath of twitter
twitter.com/Direct_PS/status/1028921095863250944 following a prime site plug of vitality well woman vitamin tablets asking how are you today from August. (Tess Daly is on it) Women are telling them how they are.
Don't forget that the company that own prime site own the Capital Radio stations too.

TrumpsToddlerTantrums · 27/09/2018 08:03

I imagine that Ocado hope it will all blow over, and those of us who have threatened to cancel will forget to and it'll all go back to normal. I wasn't a big spender, £40-65 most weeks, usually a few basics and "luxuries" that we can live without but aren't available in my small town. I'm thinking of a monthly Waitrose shop for treats and local shopping for the basics.

The thing is I haven't bought Nestle since the 80s, haven't shopped in Tesco since 2009, once boycotted I commit! I won't be going back to Ocado in a few months. I'll stop recommending them (best delivery service I've had, IMO), my children will (fingers crossed) be leaving home in the next few years, they've absorbed our shopping habits. It's a family of potential consumers they've lost, not just me.

EverardDigby · 27/09/2018 08:08

Thanks Procrastinator that twitter feed is an excellent read!

highlandcoo · 27/09/2018 08:13

I haven't used Ocado in a few years, since living in a top floor flat in London.

But very happy to check if I'm still in their system and cancel if so, and explain why.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 27/09/2018 08:20

Sorry , have scanned TFT but not seen it - did Ocado ever make their statement?

Turph · 27/09/2018 08:24

That Twitter thread is something else!
