Ocado boycott after support of Primesight action

On discovering today that Ocado are continuing to use Primesight after they removed Standing For Women's billboard, thereby showing they have no respect for women or our rights, I have emailed them to tell them that I will no longer shop with them as they support misogyny. I'm just wondering how many others have done the same and hoping this thread gets picked up by twitter and/or the press.

I bought 2 shares this morning in order to sell them later, this is my email.

Dear Mr Steiner,

I am not a big user of Ocado, I have a few shares and I buy once a year for Australia Day as Ocado is one of the few companies that stock Australian goods.

You may be aware that a poster in Liverpool was put up for two weeks simply giving the dictionary definition of 'woman'. This is in response to a small but vocal group of males claiming to 'self ID' as women and accessing spaces that until recently were safe spaces ie girl guides, women's toilets and women's refuges.

Thew people define themselves as 'women' but retain their male genitalia and hormones, the only changes made are the wearing of clothing marketed at women. These transgender 'women' are not to be confused wit transsexual women, transsexual women undergo hormone treatment and surgery, they also live permanently as women not just some of the time.

You may have heard of Karen White, a male rapist who started to wear women's clothes in order to be transferred to a women's prison where he raped another three women.

David Challanor has advised on transgender policies for several organisations and is currently serving 20+ years for the torture and rape of a 10 year old little girl.

When challanor was sentenced another trans rights activist disclosed the victim's name on twitter.

Ian Huntley who murdered two little girls has also self identified as a woman.

You can probably see why I, and other women women, do not want to be associated with these people (the examples above are typical of TRAs, they are obsessed with being allowed to enter women's spaces and break down safeguarding of children.)

In response tot his attack o women, and it is an attack, there have been assaults on women, bomb threats and intimidation both on and off line.

So a small group of women paid for a poster to be displayed giving just a simple dictionary definition.

One MAN complained. A man who hates women and the poster was removed, that's right someone wants to erase women and has enabled a poster company to erase a poster defining, 'woman'

Your company does business with the poster company, and your twitter account has supported the man, claiming that women, publishing the dictionary definition of 'woman' is somehow 'hate speech'.

I'd estimate over 80% of your customers are women. Women according to the dictionary definition.

We are not going to shop with a company that does not support us.

I have not decided what to do with my shares, selling them seems like making my hands dirty, and maybe I can do more by attending shareholder's meetings.

I am not the only women choosing to boycott you.

It's sad that you automatically take the side of a man against your customers and the only reason you may take notice of women is when your profits drop.

And also, what a spectacular own goal? Your twitter account could have supported women and won you much much more custom.

I hope you enjoy your role as CEO as much as Gerald Ratner did.

Yours sincerely

where can I currently get stickers from? I'm going to a big IT event next week and fancy doing a bit of stickering in the loos

Not an Ocado customer and will never be after this.

Reading these posts and the amount of money posters on this thread spend regularly with Ocado they are going to be losing thousands per month/year, do they seriously think this loss will be made good by the good doctor and his friends?

One other thing to note is that this thread and the actions of posters will show advertisers and partners of Mumsnet who have been threatened by TRAs what will happen if they cave in to their demands. Those companies that have stood firm in the face of the TRA threats can congratulate themselves on being right and protecting their business, shareholders and customers.

Never underestimate the power of women and what they can achieve when they stand together.

thiskitten · 26/09/2018 11:14

The Oxford english dictionary definition of something is transphobic? Are they going to start burning dictionaries (books) next?
And yes, if the definition of woman wasn't being eroded to the point of ridiculousness, a reminder of the blatantly obvious facts would not be necessary.
As PPs have said - wonder if the OED dictionary of man would get the same treatment- I'd be willing to wager not.

Gulag thanks! Haven't bought any of their stuff since I left uni but I feel a fish finger hankering for sandwich coming on!

I bought 2 shares this morning in order to sell them later

If you own a share in them you can go to their shareholders’ annual general meeting. Would be a shame if that got disrupted wouldn’t it? My Mum used to do this in the 80s to protest about Shell trading with Apartheid era South Africa.

RangeRider · 26/09/2018 11:16

They advertise with Mumsnet and have some products with “approved by Mumsnet” on the packaging. TRAs keep threatening Birdseye and telling them now triggering the MN logo is for them and asking them not to advertise on Mumsnet at all.
I love my fish fingers even more now!

TimIsHavingABadDay

Loving your work - I think it is a case of making these people realize that it is their wives/mothers/daughters who will also be affected. DH didn't really get it until I brought his mum into the equation (we don't have any daughters)

PS I have also reported your post

Charliethefeminist · 26/09/2018 11:19

Can anyone see this mornings ocado tweets? They are responding to people but it doesn't appear on their timeline

sashh · 26/09/2018 11:20

Geraldine Already thought about, either on this thread or the other one - I'm switching between them at the moment.

AbsintheFriends · 26/09/2018 11:23

Is there anywhere independent online where one can review supermarkets or online retailers?

TakeAbow has mentioned trustpilot as a useful consumer resource. Good to know. I'd hate to inadvertently spend my money with a company who doesn't value my existence Wink

RedDogsBeg · 26/09/2018 11:26

This is the type of thread that needs to be picked up and shared widely via other media outlets.

As always, money talks and only when the bottom line is hit do people start to listen and think.

GulagMilkMonitor · 26/09/2018 11:26

A unnecessary reminder

Really? If the definition of woman becomes an unnecessary reminder then how quickly will it escalate? Tampons on the shelves a has crime, pregnant women too visible is hurtful and my breasts providing nourishment to my infant child - harrowing!

If we can’t openly define ourselves correctly then the lives we lead as a result of our sex become dangerous.

Ariclock · 26/09/2018 11:26

I have emailed Ocado to say that I will no longer be shopping with them and have explained that as an adult human female I don't share the same values as them. Thanks for sharing the info on this thread, it might be a good idea to see if if could be moved to aibu.

TimeLady · 26/09/2018 11:28

Can we just be clear - reports say that Karen White 'assaulted' (not raped) four inmates whilst on remand - for rape - in a women's prison.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/09/2018 11:28

re dictionaries, the campaigning began a while ago...

Laniakea · 26/09/2018 11:29

I’ve just done a GDPR request to make sure the remove all my data as well. We’ve been using Ocado for ever - tens of thousands of pounds.

PurdysChocolate · 26/09/2018 11:30

I have messaged them as well. I order from Ocado every week or two, but will definitely take my business elsewhere if they don't come back with a satisfactory answer.

sashh · 26/09/2018 11:33

I've just thought of something else for anyone who hasn't cancelled yet.

Get your Xmas shop organised, booked, and cancel at the last moment.

Anyone in touch with Posie, can you tell her I'd be delighted for her to attend the shareholder's meeting with me (if I don't sell).

I'm disabled so she can come as my carer.

theOtherPamAyres · 26/09/2018 11:46

Can we just be clear - reports say that Karen White 'assaulted' (not raped) four inmates whilst on remand - for rape - in a women's prison.

Good point. A lot of comments on Twitter and under newspaper articles claim that White raped women prisoners. He didn't. He sexually assaulted them. White was in prison because he had raped women elsewhere. He also had previous convictions for domestic violence and paedophilia-related offences.

Let's get our facts right if we want to persuade people by facts.

sashh · 26/09/2018 11:49

Can we just be clear - reports say that Karen White 'assaulted' (not raped) four inmates whilst on remand - for rape - in a women's prison.

But they were sexual assaults weren't they?

And as 'she'; is now a woman would rape be recorded as rape?

onedayiwillmissthis · 26/09/2018 11:56

Have emailed Ocado cancelling. Explained why. Perhaps if enough of us do this they may listen?

AncientLights · 26/09/2018 12:01

I am also thinking about buying a few Ocado shares so I can go to the shareholders' meetings but think I will hang fire until their press statement is released. The share price might drop at that point so I'll get a better deal. Their shares have been on a bit of a down of late ...

DereksSexyPyjamas · 26/09/2018 12:01

I believe the Karen White assaults in prison were incidents of ‘sexual touching,’ something like hugging a woman while having an erection iirc. Still vile, but not rape.

AgnesNaismith · 26/09/2018 12:02

I’ve just done a GDPR request to make sure the remove all my data as well. We’ve been using Ocado for ever - tens of thousands of pounds.

You could also put in a data subject access request. Under GDPR they have 30 days to get back to you with all information they have on you....bit of a nightmare for large companies.....takes a long time and can cost a lot of money, especially if lots of people put them in.

If they don’t provide data they can be charged 4% of their global annual turnover....
