'Transgender journalist India Willoughby talks about the double life she led for decades
SINCE India Willoughby joined ITV as a presenter on its local news channel in Cumbria last November, she has been busy making headlines of her own as Britain’s first transgender TV journalist.'
"What makes her story more remarkable is that in the five years between quitting the show as Jonathan in 2010 and returning as India, she lived a bizarre and secret double life.
In her own words she was “flip- flopping between genders”.
“I did it because I didn’t want to upset my family and friends,” she explained.
During the week she lived in Newcastle where she donned skirts, heels and makeup to work as glamorous female PR executive Joanne Charles.
On Friday evenings she’d revert to being doting father Jonathan, pulling on jeans and a football shirt before driving the 60 miles back to Carlisle to see her son." (continues)
“The next day I thought, ‘Maybe there’s a better way’. And that’s when I decided to split my life in two.”
Talking about how she led a double life for five long years she said: “It was like being undercover. But I was losing my identity. I couldn’t be male, that was pretence from the off, but I couldn’t be fully female either.
“I had two sets of friends, neither of which knew the other existed, and my family were completely oblivious to the life I was living. But the mental strain of juggling two lives… got too much.” (continues)
