If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

I agree. This is of interest to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, in the UK and worldwide who have funded/used student finance/remortgaged their homes (or are considering doing so) so their close relatives can go to UK Unis. Not to mention of interest to the students themselves, who, no doubt, @Brushbox will tell you find it merely hilarious. Yes it’s vaguely amusing - until the jokes turn into sexual harassment, violence and rape.

OvaHere · 19/09/2018 14:27

Wow. I can't believe BrushBox turned up to try and mansplain crass misogyny. Oh no wait..I can. Hmm

Yes to all those saying why are there no versions of this leaflet with a male face?

Also individual universities should absolutely make it their business to know what is being handed out to their students rather than leaving it to a third party and hoping for the best.

MipMipMip · 19/09/2018 14:53

Can you ask MNHQ to move it OP?

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2018 15:01

Yes to all those saying why are there no versions of this leaflet with a male face?

To be clear, I don't think any of us want anything in Freshers 'welcome' packs liable to make any new student uncomfortable, or to feel in any way pressurised to participate in any activity they're not happy with, be it sex or drinking or, oh, I don't know, joining the CU or LGBTsoc or Momentum or .... welcome packs should make freshers feel welcome.

Just give them their pot noodle and a free toothbrush etc fgs.

OvaHere · 19/09/2018 15:24

YY Errol I don't think there should be any version of it. It was a clumsy way of questioning the thought processes behind this marketing.

ifonlyus · 19/09/2018 15:45

Oh dear Sussex University.

Looks like an audit on Lad Culture in Universities was taken in 2015 www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/universities/sexism-on-campus/

On the back of that a Lad Culture pilot scheme was set up with 9 Universities participating.

One of those 9 Universities is Sussex University.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 15:46

Authentic.
Relatable.
Innovative.
Stylish.

Read about the brand strategy here - that turned an ‘unsexy’ topic into something ‘desirable’ - if you can bear it:

designdough.co.uk/portfolio/brushbox/

Authentic 70s soft porn more like. No actual woman brushes their actual teeth like this.

This bit of branding really missed the mark, being neither authentic or relatable. Or indeed innovative.

BiologyMatters · 19/09/2018 16:15

What a fucking mealy mouthed pathetic reply. If it's not sexist and a disgusting ad campaign then im sure those men behind this advert would be happy for their mums to be in the photo with spunk toothpaste dribbling out of their mouth? If it's only about oral hygiene then why not? Or if its not aimed at women then next shall we see a photo of those very men who think this is a brilliant ad with spunk dribbling out of their mouths? If not why not?

OlennasWimple · 19/09/2018 16:18

However, coincidentally yesterday DD was - disapprovingly- telling me about the 'drinking clubs' at her uni. Some apparent have more-or-less harmless silly initiations (e.g crawl from the college to somewhere in town) but the one she was (obviously) appalled by was 'sleep with a fresher'

"Fuck A Fresher" was a "thing" back in the 90s, and perhaps before. Some clubs - notably the sports ones - have always had dodgy initiation stuff, mostly involving drinking your body weight in beer, gratuitous nudity and stealing traffic cones. But the nudity tended not to be sexual (more like rugger buggers mooning out the back of a bus).

Anyway brushbox are clearly misogynistic twats, and I feel sorry for the poor sods who have to work there.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2018 16:23

There was talk of older students (Male, of course) notching their bedposts in 1979. But I'm not sure it was much of a 'thing'.

powershowerforanhour · 19/09/2018 16:24

The usual non apology:
"Tongue in cheek"...ie BANTZ!!! OH THE BANTZ!!! Can't you take a joke you hatchet faced frigid bitches?
"Raising Awareness" Oh just fuck off. As a PP pointed out, men are probably less likely on average to take good care of their oral health- so why isn't there hilarious toothpaste spunk dripping down a stubbly chin? Yeah we all know why:
Woman, welcome to your place at university... as cum receptacle. Your mouth needs to be looking its best for its primary function as a fuck hole for men's cocks! Buy our product!

And the usual "sorry you feel that way" (we couldn't give a fuck).

OlennasWimple · 19/09/2018 16:25

I suspect it was something talked about more than done, and pretty easy to avoid (for both sexes) if they so wished

And, like the person who drank too much and made a complete fool of themselves at freshers' week, they weren't automatically catapulted into cool status. They were often pitied more than lauded

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 19/09/2018 16:30

Holy mother of fuck, I am livid about that Toothbrush advert with spunk coming out of the woman's mouth.

"welcome to university, teenage girl. Be a good sport and let men spunk in your mouth, won't you. And don't forget to brush your teeth afterwards because it tastes disgusting so it wouldn't be fair to make your man have to taste it if you kiss him afterwards".

MollyHuaCha · 19/09/2018 16:49

Depressing thread. Impressionable 18yr olds beginning university deserve better.

Charliethefeminist · 19/09/2018 17:09

I never get tired of boycotting, never.

ToeToToe · 19/09/2018 17:13

Seriously depressing.

Nothing like this when I went to university in the late 80s.

Back in the late 80s, I would never have thought women would be dealing with worse misogyny and degradation of women in 2018.

FFS. We're going backwards. Online porn is definitely connected to this. Show a load of young men a load of porn that involves the abuse and degradation of women, and - shock! - they will treat women like this. And think nothing of it.

But great thread! Here and on twitter. Thanks for starting it OP, and raising such awareness. We must keep on objecting.

SunsetBeetch · 19/09/2018 17:23

That page on "initiations" on the Dig in website is no longer available. They're watching...

wotsit99 · 19/09/2018 17:29

My friend went to Sussex uni 9 years ago. Brimming with drugs.... She rarely spent a night not off her trolley on somsthing. Very LGBT focused. (Think Brighton generally is a LGBT Party scene etc)

BiologyMatters · 19/09/2018 17:30

Incidentally I overheard someone at work saying his niece who started at the uni in question on Sunday was given various drinks vouchers for local bars and clubs as a welcome thing, and she's been out and got rat arsed to the point of paralytic every night this week. If that's the current uni culture you can fucking keep it.

disorganisedXX · 19/09/2018 17:35

Welcome to the grown up real word of uni where you should accept this handy education intro pack inviting you to denigrate women, anyone with a disability and those who are here to learn. It's ok if you disagree as long as you enjoy having NO FRIENDS. Included in handy pack;

misogynistic blow job 'jokes' - just having a laugh

sobriety equals nae mates - just having a laugh

disablist inclusion zones - anything goes - just having a laugh

So remember kids pick on the women and disableds cos it's fun and nobody cares as you can see from this handy info pack Grin

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 17:35

Yes, they’re watching. They’ll be wondering what the best thing is to do. If I were Dig in, I’d apologise and recognise the mistakes made, issue a supportive statement about sexual violence on campus, and then align themselves with it as an issue they care about, as they have done previously with mental health. Brushbox just need to apologise for a (hopefully) one-off branding fail and make a mental note to avoid sexualising women to sell toothbrushes in future.

Naturally they will do none of these things as that would mean giving up their male rights to exploit women for profit.

disorganisedXX · 19/09/2018 17:42

Yesterday I was driving through a busy uni city and stopped with a cyclist in front of me back from a pelican crossing to let folk cross. There was a group of young male students crossing where my car was slowing to stop (so 5m south of the crossing).

They decided I was stopping to inconvenience them ( not to give a cyclist safe space! ), they had to walk around my car and split around it kicking and banging it as they went. I had my 7yo with me who was obviously frightened.

This was a busy street in the middle of the afternoon and I could not get my head around the casual violence and aggression from lads who were clearly newcomers (backpacks in student zone) to a woman and child in a car doing nothing but stop with traffic.

This pack is showing me where the wee shitbags get their appalling attitudes from.

ThistleAmore · 19/09/2018 17:42

I left university about 15 years ago, and while I loved it, I'm very worried about my niece, who's hoping to go to Cambridge in a few years' time.

She's hoping to study a STEM subject, so hopefully perhaps a little removed, but I still worry about this pervasive misogyny that seems to have crept in.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 19/09/2018 17:43

I'dve taken a photo and sent it to the local college. Probably wouldn't have done any good but it would make me feel better.
