If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

It's not just me, is it, who thinks Brushbox are probably wasting their money? Most students are perfectly capable of cleaning their teeth, and buying new toothbrush and paste.

The ones who are particularly clued up on oral health will have an electric brush anyway.

Maybe the 'prettiest thing you can wear is a smile' but one of the ugliest is a misogynistic attitude, guys.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 13:41

The terrifying initiations thing is from the dig-in site, for clarity.
Obviosuly they feel reading all that will make 18 yo kids feel realyl confident and happy about leaving home for the first time and going to university...

That brushbox thing is hilarious.

MN: Oh wow fucking hell that is appallingly sexist, all those girls being reminded on day 1 that their real role in life is to service dick
Brushbox: OMG YOU BASTARDS YOU WANT EVERYONE'S TEETH TO FALL OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Proper funny.

Bunch of cunts. Can I say that? Probably. It's about a whole company not an individual Smile

I don't know. For students, a freebie is a freebie.

bzzbeebzz · 19/09/2018 13:43

@BrushBoxUk
It’s us parents who will now not spend money on your products, for us or our kids, including university age.
You’re a dinosaur.

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 13:43

It is from Digin but as dig in are promoting the bollocks it's on them too. Like with any uni that handed that out to a teenager this week.

nopeni

It's a leaflet, nothing useful at all.

NameChangedAgain18 · 19/09/2018 13:44

Initiations are not a big thing in the U.K. like they are in the US, though they do happen. I have a colleague who moved here from the US who says that the two worst things about the university he taught at were the fraternity/ sorority culture, and the absolute priority that sport was given over everything else, with classes cancelled for a match, and the sports coaches paid more than the professors.

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 13:45

For students, a freebie is a freebie.

They didn't even get a freebie though they got a beer mat. At least potnoodle gave them something they could eat.

Yes, indeed. I’d been planning to replace my toothbrush with a recyclable one next time. I know where I won’t be looking now.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 13:46

If @brushboxUK want to associate brushing teeth with giving blow jobs

They may want to rethink their use of female children in their marketing

The two images do not sit well together

nopeni · 19/09/2018 13:47

They didn't even get a free toothbrush? Cheapskates!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 13:47

I also question whether women have worse dental hygiene on average than men.

IME men are worse for this.

@brushboxUK your ad should have shown a male mouth with "semen" dribbling out of it. Looking forward to seeing this logical next step in your current campaign.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/09/2018 13:48

In particular, there was never any suggestion or intention (consciously or unconsciously) to be derogatory towards women in any way shape or form

Then why isnt the image that of a man?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/09/2018 13:49

Oh cross post

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 13:49

OK so

Sussex University
Brushbox (who seem to market to families a LOT >>> We are a big part of their target market the utter fucking dickheads)
Dig-In

On the shitlist thanks OP.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/09/2018 13:51

@brushboxuk This is grim and completely inappropriate. The targeting of girls & women through sexual innuendo is relentless from a young age, and you are contributing to it.
Pathetic.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 13:53

Is Sussex Uni to blame though or was it the Students Union there that co-ordinated it, or a company that manages student residences?

AbsintheFriends · 19/09/2018 13:53

It almost makes it WORSE that they didn't realise how offensive it is.

nopeni · 19/09/2018 13:56

Oh they did, don't worry.

People in marketing love getting attention. It's all good for them.

NameChangedAgain18 · 19/09/2018 14:00

The university should absolutely be aware of what is being handed out to freshers on their arrival.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 14:00

True.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2018 14:12

I'd suggest @BrushBoxUK considers how they would have responded if they'd been caught being 'unintentionally' racist rather than sexist.

drspouse · 19/09/2018 14:14

Initiation is a part of some British universities too. St Andrew's springs to mind. But nothing like that.

gendercritter · 19/09/2018 14:16

I think this should be in AIBU tbh. There would be so many parents who would be disgusted if they knew about this.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2018 14:26

Well, unsurprisingly, they've not managed a mention yet on currently active convo 'Your fave subscriptions and memberships e.g. Hellofresh'
