If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

It's about as progressive as one of those pens where you tilt it and the woman on it's clothes fall off.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 10:40

Milord has a lovely ring to it.

We’re dropping our eldest off at uni on Saturday.

If I find one of these (and I will be looking) I will be asking serious questions.

Iused2BanOptimist · 20/09/2018 10:40

Thanks for the explanation Absinthe
I thought it was part of a jigsaw with more to come!Grin

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 10:42

University of Portsmouth (I think) were tweeting pics of the pyramid of boxes they had to hand out to students. I refuse to believe no one looked in the box.

New to Uni? Not sure how to suck cock yet? Don’t worry, many 18 year old girls don’t. However, it’s so easy - like brushing your teeth - look, try this on for size, maybe take a selfie? Or ask your new friends to take the pic for you and pass it around so you can tell everyone you’re learning the ropes pretty good. Fake it till you make it! Soon you’ll be doing it twice a day, only takes two minutes a go! What do you mean, where’s the library? Get your priorities right lady!

AbsintheFriends · 20/09/2018 10:47

There's a thought, optimist... I wouldn't rule it out. They've probably got the photoshoot scheduled - 5 different women, dribbling spunk. Collect them all! Arrange swaps!

Duke, after I posted I realised it should probably be Your Grace Grin

MipMipMip · 20/09/2018 10:48

In case anyone is wondering about the cut out that is so you can fasten it under your nose and look like you too are practising good oral hygiene by dripping spitting not swallowing. Oh the fun!

MipMipMip · 20/09/2018 10:50

Oh god. Sorry for the x-post. Blush

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 10:52

Also good Grin I really should be DuchessOfSussex but some bastard got in their first for presumably a royal wedding based name change.

OMG Absinthe Don't give them ideas!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 20/09/2018 11:16

""Nearly two thirds of students sexually assaulted or harassed at university"

I read the piece as well.

What's interesting is that while it alludes briefly to "more women than men" it gives no figures.

It was also a self selecting reponse thingy so >> who knows.

Anyway yes I agree :D

But - I also read a thing recently about how they did a study (and why the fuck they were studying this I have no idea) but anyway they found that men who had a woman tell them that they hadn't done very well on a test, afterwards found ideas about women being raped & similar much more appealing than before a woman mildly upset them by saying something factual and neutral.

So for this it would be interesting to measure the actual psychological impact of objectifying imagery being shown to men and women while they are doing something.

It would be interesting too, to see how exposing men to objectifying images of men while they are trying to get on with something normal impacted on them.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 20/09/2018 11:21

DH said yesterday "why hasn't she got a nose?".

I said "maybe she didn't have a very nice nose anyway they're not interested in her nose" lol

Have just updated him.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 11:22

What's interesting is that while it alludes briefly to "more women than men" it gives no figures.

I haven't read it I admit but i could hazard a guess as to the sex of 98% of the sexual attackers were though.

Without a nose oral sex of all kinds would be impossible. So yet again, another fail.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 20/09/2018 11:23

My dd has just started at university. She is a wheelchair user, autistic, studious, a non drinker and (at the moment) totally uninterested in sex.

I have a lot of worries about her but I did think she would be safe as she is not going to get involved in drinking culture etc.
No I am not so sure.
She is not at Sussex but her Student Association has been mentioned here before for its 'wokeness'.

Don't think she had a welcome box of any kind though.

When I started at university (41 years ago) the Students' Association sent a pack through the post which included a Students' Handbook. This included articles on drugs, alcohol and sex among other things. As a very naive student from a strict religious background, I found the clear factual information really helpful and reassuring.
Surely that is the type of thing Student Unions should still be giving to new students.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/09/2018 11:28

(Points up) Is that name in honor of the recent thread about Scots slang?

I'd think the most useful things for student to receive would be simple guides on budgeting, time management, and basic food preparation.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/09/2018 11:28

Like, "how not to die of food poisoning or develop scurvy during your first term, an illustrated guide".

NothingOnTellyAgain · 20/09/2018 11:42

"Without a nose oral sex of all kinds would be impossible. So yet again, another fail."

lololololol

NothingOnTellyAgain · 20/09/2018 11:46

"Like, "how not to die of food poisoning or develop scurvy during your first term, an illustrated guide"."

yeah but with this lot in charge the answer will be "suck cock and swallow! semen is really good for you" as per the desperate claims of teenage boys since before I was a girl I'm sure Grin

For the girls anyway.

Probably the girls can cook for teh boys to make sure they stay healthy? While the girls get their nutritional needs met from blowing as many boys as poss (at least 2 a day)??

AngryAttackKittens · 20/09/2018 11:48

"Food preparation? We have people for that. They're the same ones who give the blow jobs."

So, have the toothbrush people made a better attempt at salvaging their reputation yet?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 20/09/2018 11:51

Attack Kittens no I have this name for years.
And it isn't slang, its Scots.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 20/09/2018 11:53

So a sandwich and a blow job.

And that one day a year a steak and a blow job, you know that day where some men think they are beign funny and are totally unaware that as soon as they say it 99% of the women around them are thinking "Oh! You're a complete wanker. Good to know".

I don't think women need to attend university for this?
Couldn't they just have some living in the halls to service the men to make sure they are able to do their important studies properly?

AngryAttackKittens · 20/09/2018 11:54

Aside - any man who calls the week his partner has her period steak and blowjob week deserves a punch in the balls.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 11:58

Steak and a blowjob day is an important holiday. It's to thank men for the petrol station roses and crotchless knickers that you never asked for but they knew, really, you wanted.
