Where is the bewilderness?

I miss her!

I think if I were MNHQ I would want to reflect on what it was about the Stella Creasy Unpleasantness (SCU) that caused so many previously trouble free, fairly peaceable contributors to all have to be escorted off the premises as if they'd suddenly transmogrified into MitMoo.

Something happened there that made a whole bunch of women who have previously had little or no trouble staying within posting guidelines all behave in a way that MNHQ deemed beyond the pale.

CrackpotsArePots · 16/09/2018 17:11

Lang

No. I think personal feelings got in the way.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/09/2018 17:14

Bernard, perhaps someone was unhappy about a security light shining in the dark? Tis a long time ago.

Best wishes to all the banned. So sad to see you go.

hipsterfun · 16/09/2018 17:33

I missed the Stella Creasy Unpleasantness - can anyone fill me in?

ChampagneCommunist · 16/09/2018 17:38

I would very much like to join in on Facebook groups, as the risk on banning here is just getting too high.

Can anyone recommend which to ask to join? PM me if that's better for you/the Group

Aridane · 16/09/2018 17:39

So if you get banned, you can just re-register and continue posting?

Descent · 16/09/2018 17:39

I'm not convinced the Stella Creasy thread wasn't a set up to get rid of people. It was very late in the day for the request made by Stella to render the whole thing pointless.

hipsterfun

there was a (now deleted) web chat with Stella Creasy about 1.5 weeks ago.

She was asking for mumsnetters to contact their MPs to ask them to support a bill to make misogyny a hate crime. except bizarrely the vote was the following day, so any action we took was unlikely to make a difference.

It then transpired during the thread that she had consulted with Stonewall (?) on the bill. When asked for her definition of 'woman' for the purposes of defining those affected by misogyny, she was unable to give a satisfactory answer.

many posters (my self included) posted comments along the lines of 'I've done what you asked, but here's a grumble about your definition of 'woman''

these posts began to disappear

and then basically it all went nuclear

LangCleg · 16/09/2018 17:53

We lost Offred too, though Inthink she simply left, seeing the writing in the wall.

IIRC, Offred left over posts about safeguarding of hers being deleted. She wrote a post explaining why and then went elsewhere.

OlennasWimple · 16/09/2018 17:53

hipster - it was a complete car crash

SC posted something along the lines of "everyone here needs to email their MP to tell them to vote in a particular way tomorrow". SC had tabled an amendment to the "upskirting bill" that would make misogyny an aggravating factor that can be taken into consideration when sentencing. She only responded to a couple of posts then disappeared, which really didn't help, but essentially she was unable to answer the question about how she was defining a woman or how her view that TWAW helps keep women safe rather than supporting the misogyny she purports to oppose

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 16/09/2018 17:53

So if you get banned, you can just re-register and continue posting?

previously banned posters are immediately shown the door when reported

i don't know how MNHQ determine that they're PBP

OlennasWimple · 16/09/2018 17:55

Posted too soon...

MN got busy on the delete button, so the thread quickly looked like Swiss cheese, then took it down altogether because it was ridiculous. I don't remember who the mod was, but they got a little, um, enthusiastic with the ban hammer

I'd like to join a FB group too, but I know that they've had trouble with someone joining then leaking information. I don't know how women can ever get a place to talk to each other in peace without flipping men shoving in and wanting it to be all about them. Don't MRA groups have their own boards and FB groups?

pombear · 16/09/2018 17:59

Some of us are just lucky we were on holidays during the StellaCreasygate madness.

So many of these women namechecked on this thread have helped me become stronger and stronger in my understanding of the issue women face right now.

Their legacy, even if they don't come back, is enormous here. And elsewhere, as many of us are getting stronger and remembering who we are and where we've come from (and who helped us get us here).

And for all MNHQ's foibles in exercising the banhammer in the wrong places, thank fuck this is still a place where discussion can happen.

I saw another thread where a trans rights activitst was stating that they didn't experience the same discussion elsewhere online - that's because Mumsnet is one of the only places allowing airspace and the ability to have this discussion without shutting it off.

And that's down to all those women, including the amazing bewilderness and others, forging the way for so long, steadfast and sure.

All of you women, and the new women (and some men) starting to speak out, and speak up. You inspire me, give me sustenance, and (sorry, fluffiness coming up) I luffs you.

(PS Mitmoo reference - OMG!)

CrackpotsArePots · 16/09/2018 18:06

Basically we all got very excited by the idea of having a real life MP/feminist/woman to talk too and hadn't factored in her lack of desire to talk to us.

CrackpotsArePots · 16/09/2018 18:06

talk to, not too.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 16/09/2018 18:08

Mitmoo reference - OMG!

yeah I know. I mean it used to be an instant ban right? but I figure I'm already on shaky ground, so hwy not live dangerously

FunkyBoldRibenas · 16/09/2018 18:09

MRAs do it all the time...the pee troll...all the perv trolls...time after time.

Think of us as the 'women and girls safety trolls'...popping in to point out the dangers and then getting banned again and re-registering under yet another email address to joint in on the next travesty that is occurring... that puts women and girls in danger.

What meanies eh? On a site that is supposedly about...women.

AnyFucker · 16/09/2018 18:10

I missed the Ms Creasey stuff too.

Just as well, really

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 16/09/2018 18:11

I'm really sorry to hear that Offred is gone too.

she spent thousands of hours providing invaluable support to women on the relationships board (and valuable content for this site).

If she has decided that Mumsnet isn't for her at the moment then that just makes me even more Sad

AnyFucker · 16/09/2018 18:12

Offred was (is) brilliant.

AnyFucker · 16/09/2018 18:13

@Offred just in case....

hipsterfun · 16/09/2018 18:13

Thanks all.

Was this before or after the NSPCC chat went swimmingly? Grin
