What if there had been a Savile thread back in the day...

AIBU to think Jimmy Savile OBE KCSG is a paedophile sexual predator?
He didn’t exactly deny it when questioned by Lynn Barber in 1990. He more or less evaded the question when asked by Louis Theroux in 2000. In 2007, the Irish journalist Orla Barry asked him about rumours of paedophilia and sexual assault and he responded “what rumours?”. Also in 2007 he was investigated for allegations of sexual assault in an approved school for girls. In 2008 he started legal proceedings against the Sun for linking him to aggregations of sexual assault in Jersey, which he claimed he had never visited, though photographic evidence showed otherwise.
AI also BU to suggest that there is a wholesale cover up going on at the highest levels of the establishment, including within the police and the BBC, to protect Savile and people like him, who hide in plain sight and simply deny and misdirect, and that the people who suffer are women and girls, especially those who are vulnerable and easy to exploit?

Don’t be so paranoid.

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/09/2018 09:00

Yes there was an epic cover up. Now its the catholic church

GulagMilkMonitor · 15/09/2018 09:04

I’m sure Jim would have fixed it for the thread to be deleted.

placemats · 15/09/2018 09:08

There was always suspicions regarding the Catholic Church though.

Back on topic.

Just because he looks a bit weird doesn't mean anything. Besides, my nan loves him. Why do some people hate this man?

He's done so much for charity and those poor people who are spastic - modern day interjection, sorry for using that word -

Just stop with this hatred against him. He does so much for charity, blah, blah, blah.

GulagMilkMonitor · 15/09/2018 09:09

He gave those scouts burgers on a rollercoaster. He is a stand up gent.

borntobequiet · 15/09/2018 09:16

Aargh allegations proof read fail!

Hmm, he used to volunteer at a Hospital where my lovely Grandma volunteered too, back in the 70s. They were having a summer fayre and I asked if she would take us as Jimmy was the special guest. My lovely Grandma said 'I will not let you near that man'. People knew in the 70s, lots of people, ordinary people like us here now. Saying things. And nobody is listening.

ImpYCelyn · 15/09/2018 09:19

Are you sure it wasn't mentioned on here? I can remember about 10 years ago (when I was active on other boards here) that every now and then a thread would pop up along the lines of "things that changed your opinion about a celebrity", and there were some really awful revelations about some. But they were often followed by other posters say "That can't be right, my DB/DS/DN/BF/DP etc used to be at parties with them and (proof that that be true), so really they're a nice bloke".

I think people were less likely to challenge that with "Oh, well in that case I must be wrong" , and that often those threads weren't on FWR.

But yes, a properly sustained thread into Saville would have been interesting. As it could be for several people currently operational. The problem is, throwing those kind of accusations around on MN could lead to people being prosecuted. C.f. the people whole believe in gnomes and reading post-baby teeth, and Tom Cruise's mates. (Are we still not allowed to talk about them?)

As for cover ups, in a previous life I used to work for a national newspaper and everyone knew about Spacey. I can remember people talking about it, but saying they couldn't print. Just like John Leslie. Lawyers read everything before it goes to print, the ban hammer here is nothing compared to them...

John Lydon was talking about "rumours" about Savile in 1978 (this section wasn't broadcast at the time). So people knew.

I grew up in Ireland and people knew about the local perv priest you didn't want to be alone with. The difference is, we didn't know how widespread and global it was, and how organised the cover-ups were.

Flippin

My great aunt (who was quite young for a great aunt) refused to let me and my sister go to TOTPs when we stayed with her because she found out that Jimmy Savile was hosting. This was in the 70s.

MaisyPops · 15/09/2018 09:23

If there was a Saville thread back in the day the professionally outraged would probably have turned up and said:
'I can't believe how rude and judgemental some of you are. Man dedicates his life to volunteering with sick children and all you can do is sneer and speculate about bad intentions. Wow. Just wow. I'd happily let Jimmy Saville work with my children because I'm not some sneery judgemental fuckwit like some of you. Maybe you should do soke voluntary work and do some good instead of sitting on MN all day bitching about someone who's making the world a bettet place'.

ImpYCelyn · 15/09/2018 09:25

Oh ffs.

(Proof that that can't be true)

And

The people who believe in gnomes

ImpYCelyn · 15/09/2018 09:27

MaisyPops it's almost like you've seen it happen...

People definitely knew. I think he also used to live quite near her when he worked in the mines.

MaisyPops

That sounds exactly like my daughter now, she has banned me from talking about anything to do with self id when I am with her. She gets so angry and can't understand why I don't agree with self id. She says there are more things going on than to worry about nothing. I said there is nothing more important than protecting women and children, as she well knows. But that does sound exactly like her Grin

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 15/09/2018 09:32

As a child of the 70's and 80's I always thought he looked arrogant, creepy and his eyes looked insane and evil on tv. On his show the children he presented medals to always looked incredibly uneasy. I always thought people like Phillip Schofield and Roy Castle looked like kind souls. I'm a firm believer in watching body language and the eyes show it all Confused

placemats · 15/09/2018 09:33

My aunt lived in London but was a nurse, surprise! She was having none of it.

LangCleg · 15/09/2018 09:33

Fifty thousand posts saying "Educate yourself".

placemats · 15/09/2018 09:36

It's amazing that despite no internet and no mobile phones back then, people knew what he was up to. They protected those close to them but didn't dare say a word for fear of being ostracised.

Branleuse · 15/09/2018 09:39

There was a massive cover up with jimmy saville. My mum never let me watch jimllfixit as she said that it was well known he wasnt allowed to be on his own with the children on the show as he was a paedophile. So many people knew, but it, like lots of celebrity rumours, was not something that anybody thought they had any power over. Its a big step to leap from hearing rumours, to actually pursuing anything. Esp if it didnt involve you or people you knew

Branleuse · 15/09/2018 09:39

Bystander effect, but with rumours

Iscreamforbenandjerrys · 15/09/2018 09:40

Yes there was an epic cover up. Now its the catholic churches and almost every established religion.

All fixed.

Judaism

C OF E

Islam

sikh

Etc. Angry

scepticalwoman · 15/09/2018 09:47

He's the most special celebrity in the world and everyone complaining is guilty of hate speech. His many friends in West Yorkshire Police will interview and charge anyone criticising him - cos they're his friends aren't they...

www.theguardian.com/media/2013/feb/28/police-jimmy-savile-breakfast-club

Hmmm - West Yorkshire police again

placemats · 15/09/2018 09:51

I was accused of hate speech for writing that there are some adults who believe you can change biological sex. I didn't mention gender. This was on a post deriding and mocking adults who believed that Noah's Ark existed.
