What if there had been a Savile thread back in the day...

AIBU to think Jimmy Savile OBE KCSG is a paedophile sexual predator?
He didn’t exactly deny it when questioned by Lynn Barber in 1990. He more or less evaded the question when asked by Louis Theroux in 2000. In 2007, the Irish journalist Orla Barry asked him about rumours of paedophilia and sexual assault and he responded “what rumours?”. Also in 2007 he was investigated for allegations of sexual assault in an approved school for girls. In 2008 he started legal proceedings against the Sun for linking him to aggregations of sexual assault in Jersey, which he claimed he had never visited, though photographic evidence showed otherwise.
AI also BU to suggest that there is a wholesale cover up going on at the highest levels of the establishment, including within the police and the BBC, to protect Savile and people like him, who hide in plain sight and simply deny and misdirect, and that the people who suffer are women and girls, especially those who are vulnerable and easy to exploit?

He was as creepy as fuck and why did the Royals invite him to Balmoral. Haut la Guarenne in Jersey is a big cover up. A top detective found human remains and then low and behold they were animal and he had to retire.

LangCleg · 15/09/2018 09:56

There was a massive cover up with jimmy saville. My mum never let me watch jimllfixit as she said that it was well known he wasnt allowed to be on his own with the children on the show as he was a paedophile.

Yep, I wanted to write in once and my dad absolutely forbade it. "Over my dead body will you go anywhere near that man. Write to another show."

PurpleNailVarnish · 15/09/2018 10:04

Children In Need began being televised in 1980 and Savile wanted to be involved but he wasn't allowed.

Sir Roger Jones chooses his words very carefully in this article though others have been more forthright.
The BBC knew.

He'd have sued MN!

In the vein of ridiculous people, the woman running a charity's safeguarding course I did around 4 years ago was friends with Rolf Harris and was SURE he didn't commit those crimes. It just couldn't be true and she stood by him. She told us this on a SAFEGUARDING COURSE for her charity.

borntobequiet · 15/09/2018 10:11

Oh, I forgot to put sports organisations in the OP. Silly of me because I was prompted to post by the Gymnastics thread. And may as well add in the NHS as well - don’t know why I overlooked that.

"It's just not newsworthy, they said" a MNetter reports back after having contacted the BBC to ask why they're not covering it.

RedToothBrush · 15/09/2018 10:19

There were threads (or at least comments) on MN well before it all came out.
And on David Ike's forum.

Ike's forum is full of crack pots and conspiracy theories so it was given the same credance as being abducted by aliens from the planet zog and MN is just women so it was just ignored, cos women lie and are not to be trusted.

In terms of a cover up, you had a lot of people who turned a blind eye because they got a benefit from Saville or simply didn't want to believe it, because beliving it would have shattered their safe cosy world view and/or forced them to do something about it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/09/2018 10:20

That Telegraph Children In Need article is really interesting.
This bit :

Sir Roger said Children In Need was always on “red alert” for child abusers wanting to become involved in the charity.
“We knew that the biggest thing to guard against was the paedophiles. They were just like flies around the honeypot. Not just in the fundraising but also in the distribution of funds,” he said.

AngryAttackKittens · 15/09/2018 10:22

Which seems to be the case with all situations where a person/group is being allowed to do things that should not be allowed to do - someone always benefits, and a lot of other people benefit from not kicking up a fuss in that it makes for an easier life.

SittingAround1 · 15/09/2018 10:24

MNHQ we would like to remind everyone that we are talking about a real person here who has shit hot lawyers

Whilst general chat is allowed we will be deleting any direct allegations.
Just because someone is very odd and creepy it doesn't make them an evil sexual predator.

placemats · 15/09/2018 10:31

Well being odd looking led to the arrest of Christopher Jefferies. When in fact the murderer of Joanna Yeates was the perfectly normal looking Vincent Tabak.

www.imdb.com/title/tt3429354/

But the difference is that the 'odd looking' was used in DEFENCE of Savile.

arranfan · 15/09/2018 10:36

My lovely Grandma said 'I will not let you near that man'. People knew in the 70s, lots of people, ordinary people like us here now. Saying things. And nobody is listening.

^^ People always know and nobody listens.

As an aside, I'd always been told about what happened on the Titanic where some passengers were locked in - that was well known. Others had never heard of it until the blockbuster film - and those who had heard had dismissed it as class envy, paranoia, or an urban myth.

RedToothBrush · 15/09/2018 10:48

The 'anything for an easy life' mentality is frankly the dominant one in society.

I think its the grown up version of 'Don't be a swat / Don't stand out or be different' social pressure and control.

Bullying features heavily in the dynamic.

Old news

gendercritter · 15/09/2018 11:18

The first i heard about the rumours was immediately after his death when someone posted them on here. My memory might be wrong but I'm sure the several people saying how he was were shouted down with 'he's just died, have you no decency?' And 'but he raised so much for charity, he was wonderful.'

In all honesty I think that thread was pulled because it might upset his family to hear the rumours repeated.

Theswaggyotter · 15/09/2018 11:24

Yes I remember reading threads about it on here. I’m pretty sure before and after he died. They were initially shouted down. But I think there was widespread knowledge about this in many circles including BBC for sure

Melanippe · 15/09/2018 11:49

I couldn't watch anything with him in, not due to any prescience on my part, but because he gave me the creeps. People do, and I don't assume they're all as depraved as Saville.

or

"All these people coming out of the woodwork now, saying all these things are lying. If they were telling the truth they'd have said them when he was alive" My SiL at the time the first revelations came to light.

iklboo · 15/09/2018 11:55

There'd be lots of posts saying

'Your just jellus. He's a top bloke who does loads for kiddies' (spelled like that).

noeffingidea · 15/09/2018 12:59

There's probably been online discussions about Savile for as long as there's been a www. It was discussed very thoroughly on the David Icke forum years ago. I remember my Mum (who was not into 'pop culture' in the slightest) telling us that Jimmy Savile was a bad man way back in 1972 or thereabouts.

YeTalkShiteHen · 15/09/2018 13:02

I was desperate to go on “Jim’ll fix it” as a child. My Mum flat out refused saying he made her skin crawl and he was a wrong yin. This was mid-late 80s!

Rosemary46 · 15/09/2018 13:09

You will be on the wrong side of history making allegations about someone as wonderful as JS

You are the kind of people who are also against gay marriage.

What can’t you live and let live? Just because you don’t like his hair, you are hateful bigots .

Rosemary46 · 15/09/2018 13:12

I am reporting this thread right now for making unfounded allegations against a national treasure.

I thought this site was supposed to be all about women supporting women. Some of you are just plain nasty. Maybe you should get off the internet and look after your children instead of maligning JS.

Are the posters defending Saville being ironic. After all it is well known he was depraved and there is no question about he activities

borntobequiet · 15/09/2018 13:49

User - yes, they are being ironic.
