Last night they started harassing a load of 'T*rfs' on Twitter and then today they suggested they might like to spend some time in a gulag - before going on to write a rather long, propaganda piece in their defense.

Is this Goldsmiths Gerald Rather moment? All the marketing, the PR, the glossy website - all undone in one evening as a group of their students are internationally exposed as being either monumentally insensitive or as thick as mince (or both)?

OK, "de-essentialise" appears to be a term of art in social science research. I keep saying that social sciences aren't real science and shit like this keeps proving me right.

I think it means, approximately, 'we're too lazy and/or stupid to understand science and the scientific method so we're going to pretend it doesn't matter and we can make it up cos and it's not fair for sciency types to roll their eyes at us and...'

It is fascinating to watch this leaking into "normal" Twitter. There's virtually no shared follows between my everyday-linked-to-work account and my undercover-radfem-following account, but it's definitely starting to cross over. Other academics from far and wide are pointing and laughing at Goldsmiths. Actually looking at "latest tweets" for the word gulag is revealing, too - lots of people pissed off at the appropriation. I expect History Twitter to be busy in the morning!
