Interesting interview with Lucy McDonagh, co-founder of the Deptford People Project in this article:

Thanks for posting the link OP!

This raises a question that's been worrying me. Is Jennifer James ok? I haven't seen anything posted about her for a while, and I know she was on the receiving end of some horrible abuse.

FlowersWine for her if she's still about on MN.

Custardo · 25/03/2018 03:19

this is all a bit new to me - so firstly - thanks, i saw a lot of threads in feminsism section and just igored because i find it hard to get past the acronyms and had no idea what this was about.

I am also concious that in this section partcularly there are goady people, trolls etc and i have some genuine basic questions whih i dont want to be seen as these things.

i have a few questions

  1. has anyone asked the trans community their thoughts or are the labour party men just doing what they think is right?
  2. why not have a 3rd trans option when it comed to official ientity - and then the labour party can have trans branch officers and the trans community could also benefit from positive discrimination.
  3. break it own for me - the govt are redefining what a woman is - is that right? in law? what rights are we losing

i am totally honestly looking for opinion

TheMonstrousRegiment · 25/03/2018 03:48

There is a thread on here in the feminist chat section called Break it down for me. I'll just check and see if I can find the link...

Also we have some TW/TMs that post here as well, so you can see their opinions too.

WelcomeSmile and Gin you'll need it!

Oh and watch for Datun's posts, her's are always very clear and informative.

SubsidisedVowels · 25/03/2018 10:26

She cuts straight through all the bullshit.

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 25/03/2018 11:26

Lucy McDonagh is so impressive.

I’m clearly in danger of becoming a regular though as I spotted an error: IIRR Lilly Madigan did not carry out bullying as alleged here.

LangCleg · 25/03/2018 11:32

I think I've said this before, but I volunteer at a food bank housed in a drop-in centre that sounds a bit like the Deptford project. Just trying to provide at least a base level of help to a wide variety of people whose services have been taken away incrementally during austerity. Everything Lucy says in this interview strikes a chord with me. Thank the lord where I am is nowhere near a pomo-ridden university with outreach programmes who would actively obstruct the (limited) help we're able to offer. Particularly for the women, whose difficulties and concerns are all about things which impact women and not trans-identified males.

May I ask what happened after Lilly applied to work at the refuge? Was the application rejected? Or did Lilly get involved in some other way?

DrRadFem · 25/03/2018 11:48

Lucy is an IRL friend of mine. There are other women in Deptford who are also waking up. We are on the Pomo frontline here in Lewisham

LangCleg · 25/03/2018 11:58

I love everything Lucy has to say in that interview. Particularly the bits about the gentrification of marginalisation.

It took a Canadian feminist to actually bother to get hold of Lucy and ask her follow up questions about a tweet thread that went viral. Not a jot of any interest from any UK publication. Says it all, really, doesn't it?

BlytheByName · 25/03/2018 12:30

I went to the transgender debate in the House of Commons last week and was lucky to sit next to some mumsnetters waves and want to thank you all for your ferocious defence of women's rights. After in the pub I met the Deptford project women. They were so inspiring! Working class women and children hardly ever get heard.

DrRadFem · 25/03/2018 12:34

Lucy was also interviewed by the Guardian www.facebook.com/DRradfem/posts/2113904688828464

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 25/03/2018 17:01

Hmm, not much bandwidth given to Lucy in Guardian piece though.

DrRadFem · 25/03/2018 17:42

I was so angry about the Guardian piece, they discussed our event without talking to anybody who attended. I feel so betrayed by the Guardian in general

Custardo · 25/03/2018 18:45

thanks for thel ink - right - im nowhere near peak trans

lemme see if i got this right

trans who are fetishists (ASG?) and who are using the potential hange in law to further their own ends = bad

trans who have body dysmorphia = caught in the midle

having a discussion with grown up daughter about this and she asked - if in a patriarchal society - men are favoured - why would someone say they were trans to get treated like us women i.e. not as well as men.

i said i dont know.

;i also am not ure how this puts womens rights in jeapordy can soeone explain? is it that omeone who is trans asg has a dick - can go for a job - get the job - the commpany can say they employed a woman but really its still soeone with a ick however they idenfify?

wha other examples mmight their be? how does this infrindge on our rights as womankind?

thanks

aslo sorry about piss poor spelling ( worse than usual) as keyboard needs a good clean and i cant be arsed

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 25/03/2018 18:47

Yes

“i also am not ure how this puts womens rights in jeapordy can soeone explain? is it that omeone who is trans asg has a dick - can go for a job - get the job - the commpany can say they employed a woman but really its still soeone with a ick however they idenfify?

Custardo · 25/03/2018 19:10

thanks - but that kind o example wont be widespread - so why is this troubling us as women - what am i missing

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 25/03/2018 19:15

Others are a lot more educated than me Custardo but essentially the idea is that, this being an imperfect world, sex-segregated spaces are necessary and important. Unfortunately, some trans activists have decided that sex segregated spaces are a citadel they need to storm.

Link to a testimony follows.

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 25/03/2018 19:18

Custardo, I found this very useful. Essentially, the work being done at this refuge is being disrupted by students

mobile.twitter.com/LucyLoveslife1/status/973852316787933184

Custardo · 25/03/2018 19:36

ok totally get the spaces thing get the segregates hospital wards etc.

i still dont get how this infringes on a grand scale - womens rights.

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 25/03/2018 19:39

That’s where it gets complicated!

DrRadFem · 25/03/2018 19:49

Trans rights erase women's rights

Custardo · 25/03/2018 20:01

can you outline how

that link pertains to america

doctorcuntybollocks · 25/03/2018 20:12

Men who identify as women aren't treated as women - they're treated as very special men.
