Given how much recent news has been horrifying I thought some of us could do with a laugh, so hear you go - Robert Smith's eyeliner is oppressive to people who want everyone to know that wearing makeup means you're a woman.

Do you think the writer of that Independent article has ever heard of David Bowie? Or, you know, kilts.

MinesaBottle · 03/09/2018 18:51

I read this, rolled my eyes, then clicked on a link to an interview with the creator of non-binary emoji. Because the most important issue of our time is not feeling represented by a fucking emoji.

I feel like this article has actually been lifted from Viz

since coming out as genderqueer, Kenyatta JP Garcia felt pressured to change makeup routines and color palettes

From dark black to a more pastel black perchance? Grin

I suspect the lucifer chap has distichiasis - a genetic mutation which gives you a double row of eyelashes (liz Taylor had this.) however I’d need a very close up look to conform this ;) I’ll take one for the team ...

I feel a bit sad about this actually - all the goths I knew were very into breaking down, rather than reinforcing, stereotypes

Bowlofbabelfish · 03/09/2018 19:00

Excuse me but to whom do I complain about the indie lads in eyeliner and skinny tshirts I fucked in the late 90/early 00s?

Dunno... (shit, that’s a LOT of paperwork I just don’t have time for right now...)

Grin

I usually loathe the term first world problems but this self indulgent article is the epitome of just that.

The author I imagine would be aghast to learn that those of us over 40 even survived through glam rock just fine with zero gender confusion.

MinesaBottle · 03/09/2018 19:04

Kenyatta looks about as much like a goth as my mum tbh, apart from a few piercings and some interesting sideburns which could just as easily be industrial-influenced.

exLtEveDallas · 03/09/2018 19:06

Lucifer's guyliner both evil and just horny - I'd do him either way. Wait. Does that mean he's a woman and I'm now gay?

I used to dress up as Adam Ant as a kid. Was I dressing as a man or was he actually a woman? Who was subverting gender here? I need a lie down.

caoraich · 03/09/2018 19:18

Wow I too was a goth teen. I'm 30 now and still partial to a chap in eyeliner.

I vividly remember discovering the New York Dolls in my dad's vinyl collection and convincing my poor 17 year old boyfriend to dress up like Johnny Thunders. They were both manly as fuck!

Their best tune of course is Personality Crisis - and I rather love the irony Grin

AngryAttackKittens · 03/09/2018 19:21

Love the New York Dolls!

Checking my cis-goth privilege here, like a good girl...

He’s totally jumping someone else’s train.

AspieAndProud · 03/09/2018 20:09

Jumping the shark, more like. In a tutu.

AspieAndProud · 03/09/2018 20:11

Ridicule is nothing to be scared of.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/09/2018 20:11

Have his bats left the belltower, do we think?

I don't really understand what I've just read. The author seems to be suggesting that goths abandon gender non-conformity including men wearing makeup, so that extra special non-binary gender queer people can be recognised as extra special non-binary gender queer people, and not get 'mistaken' for normal boring men or women. But surely nobody could be that self-absorbed and narcissistic ....

ChattyLion · 03/09/2018 20:21

I would say I’m sorry if I thought that it would change his mind.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/09/2018 20:25

This time TRAs really have misjudged women's limits, pushed us too far, took us for granted...

HerFemaleness yes that's it

Raises a question though

Is teh author assuming the gender of all the other goths they see / meet out and about?

That's it in a nutshell. Thank you. Imagine being that self-absorbed.

rememberatime · 03/09/2018 21:12

So does this mean that every time a woman wears trousers or jeans, no make up and short hair, she is potentially triggering a trans person. Because dressing as a man is reserved solely for men and transmen.

Or does the argument not apply in reverse?
