Professor Rosa Freedman

As some of you on here know, I am an academic and I have just seen on twitter that another prominent voice has been added to the GC side: Prof Rosa Freedman, professor of Law at Reading:

twitter.com/GoonerProf/status/1029037165815185413

I cannot begin to explain how significant this is. Until today literally no legal academics have come out in support of the GC side and no articles are being written from a GC perspective, even in feminist journals. Given that the whole debate is around law-reform (duh) this is quite astonishing. Loads of woke-bro articles in support of course though.

Part of Rosa's motivation was the way that the academic community closed ranks on Kathleen Stock (one of my heroines). She says on her thread that she has already been thrown out of an academic online group for defending Professor Stock.

So, round of applause for Rosa and I hope this marks the beginning of many more female academics 'coming out'. I know quite a few of them think it (I can see who follows A Woman's Place Grin) but nobody dares say anything. I am far too junior and unimportant to risk being the object of vilification, so I am being a coward and keeping quiet, but inside I am celebrating.

Thank you Rosa. Your bravery gives other women courage. 💐

Seeingadistance · 14/08/2018 01:37

Thank you, Rosa!

IAmInsignificunt · 14/08/2018 03:11

Gosh Rosa, I have to say I really admire you and the stand you have taken.
I’m also in a profession where it is difficult to speak out - certainly until you reach a specific level. I have recently reached a level where I should be able to speak out but I’m pregnant and worry about the stress.

We had Rosa on the middle name list for daughters and your bravery has bumped it straight to the top.

Thank you for taking your stand.

Mamaryllis · 14/08/2018 04:51

Thank you Rosa. I saw you on Kathleen’s twitter feed yesterday and my heart sang. There are so few female academics willing to stand up and be heard. Thank you for standing by Kathleen’s side, and I hope you both inspire many more. (I also follow HBE and her worthies, and I hope you find solace in company!)
Thank you thank you. Please don’t give up. Academia at the moment is in chains.

Bowednotbroken · 14/08/2018 05:44

Thank you for your bravery and wisdom. I hope the consequences aren't painful for you! Will be following you on Twitter.

borntobequiet · 14/08/2018 06:26

Thank you.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 14/08/2018 06:52

Thank you for adding your voice, Rosa. It’s ridiculous that we’ve got to a point where this is even controversial.

PeakPants · 14/08/2018 06:56

Thank you

MoltenLasagne · 14/08/2018 07:06

Thank you Rosa - your bravery will inspire others to speak up. Courage calls to courage.

Floisme · 14/08/2018 07:12

Thank you Rosa. The curtailing of debate in academia scares the crap out of me. I hope you and Kathleen Stock will inspire others to speak up.

dianebrewster · 14/08/2018 07:13

Welcome to mumsnet 😎

Yes, wish I'd discovered it years ago as well! For sanity and light relief you might want to check out some of the other sections. You can swap between names if you want, use a fun one for when you are confessing things like a secret addiction to Westlife 😉

Be aware that we do get Trolls on here who post provocative and unpleasant anti Trans statements, mainly so they can screenshot and post on twitter to illustrate how transphobic we are. We generally try to report those posts ASAP and get the mods to delete them.

It's shocking how critical thinking has so quickly been eroded on this issue.

Imsorrylhaventaclue · 14/08/2018 07:14

Just wanted to add my voice to the ‘thank you’ chorus, Rosa. I really believe that in time people will understand exactly what it is GC women have been trying to say, but in the meantime I wish you all the strength you need to deal with the backlash.

boatyardblues · 14/08/2018 07:59

Thank you from me too, Rosa. Take strength from knowing there are many of us at your shoulder.

Yvaine1 · 14/08/2018 08:00

Morning Rosa.
Your Twitter list has expanded by one this morning!

zen1 · 14/08/2018 08:06

I hope more women in academia will be encouraged to speak out by your example Flowers

bzzbeebzz · 14/08/2018 08:21

Thank you Rosa - your bravery fosters more bravery in others

MorbidMuch · 14/08/2018 08:21

Thank you for speaking out, Rosa. Thanks

As well as the major concerns about the impact/loss of women's rights with recent transactivism, and the mutilation and sterilisation of GNC children, the damage being done to academia, debate, and critical thought is incredible.

groundcontroltomontydon · 14/08/2018 08:27

How on earth did we reach a point where standing up for women's hard won rights is controversial? Thank you, thank you, thank you for speaking out, RosaFlowers

littlbrowndog · 14/08/2018 08:43

Cheers Rosa u rock 🍺🍺🍸🍹

Poppyred85 · 14/08/2018 08:48

Thank you Rosa. The abuse I am sure you are already getting shows why feminism is still so important in 2018. I hope you are able to use this thread to give you a morale boost when abuse from other areas is overwhelming.

Thank you, Prof CakeFlowers

silentcrow · 14/08/2018 09:03

Thank you, Rosa. For every woman posting here there are who knows how many lurkers feeling bolstered too.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/08/2018 09:03

Thank you, Rosa.
Courage calls to courage everywhere.
I used to be an academic and I know how hard it would have been for me to speak out if this had happened when I was there.

Ofew · 14/08/2018 09:13

Welcome to Mumsnet!

I'm not an academic but I am a lawyer and I've been frustrated by the lack of legal analysis of the trans issue.

Thanks for speaking out.

BlooperReel · 14/08/2018 09:21

Flowers Thank you Rosa, your voice is a welcome addition to the GC base.
