"People Who Oppose Trans Rights Have No Place In Labour," Says The First LGBT Mayoral Adviser

Andy Burnham, Mayr of Greater Manchester, has hired an advisor, Carl Austin-Behan, to help him think of what to do about "the row" over All-Women shortlists. Austin-Behan's solution? Party members who campaign against trans women being fully accepted as women should no longer be allowed in the party.

Austin-Behan described opposition as "Utter rubbish; if people are trans women, then they are women.”

FFS. Hmm

RadicalFern · 07/08/2018 17:45

So just for clarity's sake - that's a male, advising a male, that other males should be allowed on all-women shortlists, and that for anyone to oppose this would be ridiculous.

Winetime for me...

So the same nuanced approach to this issue as to the anti-Semitism issue (as discussed on another thread)? Basically, yes, we do hate you, now bugger off.

I took that as read when I left the party last year. I think it was LM who celebrated women leaving the party in a tweet.

BarrackerBarmer · 07/08/2018 17:55

Wow.
He reeaaallly hates women.
Still, on the plus side, since he's a trans inclusive gay man, I bet he is busy most of the time campaigning for his gay peers to be re-educated about their aversion to breasts and vaginas and to enthusiastically accept transmen as sexual partners.

Perhaps he could start with little OJ?

MsMcWoodle · 07/08/2018 17:59

Happy to oblige.
Was a member once. Only wish I could resign again.

VickyEadie · 07/08/2018 18:03

Can just say, it's the trans "rights" thing that pisses me right off. I don't "oppose" trans people retaining their human rights. What's being demanded is far beyond that, however.

Wanderabout · 07/08/2018 18:03

What about the transmen?

Popchyk · 07/08/2018 18:09

He comes across as monumentally dim.

Blabbing far too much without giving any examples of what he calls anti-trans sentiment (presumably because he has done no research).

Another white bloke ticking the diversity box.

And then opening his big mouth and wading into the anti-Semitism thing as well. And likening that to women trying to protect women's rights.

And yes, he only cares about those male people who identify as women, nothing about women who identify as men. Because they don't matter of course.

What. an. idiot.

I suspect he won't be in the job long.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 07/08/2018 18:11

Vicky, yes, is not about their rights (although that is how it is framed so casual observers don't object) - it's about the removal and erosion of our rights and the institutionalization of misogyny.

The silly plunk should realise that some of them have the removal of homosexual rights as an end game too. All the language about identity and lifestyle and not excluding people from dating pools.

happydappy2 · 07/08/2018 18:15

The irony that he's a man, telling people that TWAW is lost on no one....
Other than Penny Mordaunt & the WEP are any women in the real world advocating that TWAW? I honestly think there will be a huge backlash against transsexuals after the shit storm that is currently brewing.....we need more people shouting from the rooftops that trans women are exactly that...trans women.

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 07/08/2018 18:16

He is a monumental idiot if he thinks that a transwoman having a heart attack will wish to be treated as a woman.

TransplantsArePlants · 07/08/2018 18:18

I just caught part of a R4 programme about the Magna Carta

In the time since it was drawn up there have been around 400 women MPs. And 4000 men

Sort out women's equality before you start including transwomen. Idiots

Nan Sloane Director of Center for Women and Democracy says "The entire political process was developed over a 2000 year period for men, by men and to address the problems that men had, and we have not redressed the balance yet".

NothingOnTellyAgain · 07/08/2018 18:31

"With domestic abuse within LGBT couples, for example, Austin-Behan said he would like other police forces to adopt Greater Manchester Police’s policy of using a specific code when officers attend same-sex domestic abuse incidents, in order"

Erm.

As with the crime stats, with self ID, these stats he wants to catch will be entirely meaningless.

Sarahconnor1 · 07/08/2018 18:32

Why is it that a male mayor goes a gay man to resolve the issue of all womens shortlists?
What qualifies him to do this?

Here's an idea Andy why don't you speak to women. A gay man will have no understanding of how biological women are held back from positions of power which is why AWS were created in the first place.

FFS. Labour really are just for the MEN, aren't they.

Ereshkigal · 07/08/2018 18:34

So just for clarity's sake - that's a male, advising a male, that other males should be allowed on all-women shortlists, and that for anyone to oppose this would be ridiculous.

As ever.

Ereshkigal · 07/08/2018 18:36

I'm going to celebrate this announcement of how truly inclusive Labour is by donating to the AWS legal crowdfunder.

placemats · 07/08/2018 18:39

Andy didn't get my vote when I was a member of the Labour Party and he stood for election.

He just about scrapes through as Mayor of Manchester.

If the Labour Party don't want women to vote for them, then that's fine. It's their problem.

Sarahconnor1 · 07/08/2018 18:40

Ereshkigal

I'm doing the same. That appointment really takes the piss out of women, so the question is, lack of awareness or doesn't give a shit.

Ereshkigal · 07/08/2018 18:42

And I will further celebrate by resigning from Labour shortly. After I use my vote against certain candidates in the NEC election. And will donate the monthly Labour subs to a feminist group.

placemats · 07/08/2018 18:42

As with the crime stats, with self ID, these stats he wants to catch will be entirely meaningless.

Yes.

placemats · 07/08/2018 18:50

Sorry that should say when he stood for election as leader.

WarmWishes · 07/08/2018 18:58

Erekeshi what is the AWS legal crowd funder?

Atthebottomofthesea · 07/08/2018 19:01

The thing is 'the women members who are not welcome in the LP' are just the thin edge of the wedge, behind them are a whole load of disillusioned voters.

The LP are going to be the catalyst for their own downfall.

It isn't just a one issue thing, there are lots of reasons people are turning their backs.

GBBO · 07/08/2018 19:06

Man made disasters, when so many suffer are the worst - Andy Burnham!
