"People Who Oppose Trans Rights Have No Place In Labour," Says The First LGBT Mayoral Adviser

Andy Burnham, Mayr of Greater Manchester, has hired an advisor, Carl Austin-Behan, to help him think of what to do about "the row" over All-Women shortlists. Austin-Behan's solution? Party members who campaign against trans women being fully accepted as women should no longer be allowed in the party.

Austin-Behan described opposition as "Utter rubbish; if people are trans women, then they are women.”

I can't post a link Warmest as it would break MN crowdfunding rules. But Jennifer James who is currently suspended from Labour is mounting a legal challenge against the Party for letting males self ID onto AWS without a GRC. They are not protected by female sex characteristic and so should not be allowed under sex discrimination law.

LangCleg · 07/08/2018 19:09

I'm going to celebrate this announcement of how truly inclusive Labour is by donating to the AWS legal crowdfunder.

Also me. I've a few quid stored up for that already and I think this is my new policy going forward. Instead of a swear box, I shall have a misogyny box and throw a quid into a feminist cause every time someone gets my goat with their woman-hating.

TerfsUp · 07/08/2018 19:11

The Labour Party is beyond a joke nowadays.

bd67th · 07/08/2018 19:13

I think I'll join PPs in chucking a few more quid in the pot for JJ's legal challenge.

I support trans rights, including the right to representation through trans officers, reserved places on otherwise open shortlists, and the right of transmen without GRCs to use their legal status as women to stand on all-women shortlists. I oppose transwomen without GRCs on all-women shortlists, because this infringes on women's right to have our sex-based oppression accounted for in political process.

If the Labour Party regard my views as unacceptable, then they have made themselves unacceptable to me. I am a May Day resigner and I will not rejoin whilst they continue to spout sexism like this.

"No self-respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her sex." One-hundred years on, Susan B. Anthony's words remain as relevant as bow as they were when she wrote them.

Absolutely.

FermatsTheorem · 07/08/2018 19:18

Yes, we really hate you, now bugger off.

Sadly, that does succinctly sum up Bromentum's attitude to both women and Jewish people.

I've left Labour over this.

heresyandwitchcraft · 07/08/2018 19:21

I am going to leave this here, and ask you how much this candidate for "Women's Officer" is actually focusing on female issues?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 07/08/2018 19:23

I see Carl Austin-Behan is married and presumably monogamous. I'm guessing he's so clueless about trans ideology he doesn't know how homophobic it is. Having a sexual orientation is described as having a genital fetish.

I can't help but wonder if he's making sure single gay men (both in his circle and in Labour generally) know they're expected to go down on the pre-op transmen they'll have to date to avoid accusations of transphobia? At least that's what lesbians often hear from TW who describe themselves as lesbians and their penis as a female organ. Being a female homosexual is classed as transphobic. Surely the rules aren't different for men? Oh, wait...

heresyandwitchcraft · 07/08/2018 19:23

My problem with trans women on all women's shortlists is that they will invariably focus on trans issues. Let trans people have their own shortlists, and let females keep theirs.

Ereshkigal · 07/08/2018 19:25

YY. Why are women not allowed anything? Their issues have fuck all to do with ours.

Popchyk · 07/08/2018 19:34

I wonder why Andy didn't select a heterosexual person to advise on LGBT issues.

Because surely LGBT should be inclusive of heterosexual people? If it isn't inclusive then it's not LGBT.

Right?

Sarahconnor1 · 07/08/2018 19:38

Popchyk

Well it only seems fair if a gay man gets to advise on women's issues.

Does Andy think the AWS is an LGBT issue rather than a women's issue?

groundcontroltomontydon · 07/08/2018 19:40

Another male politician selflessly sacrificing women's rights for the causeHmm
It's interesting (a) how it's become 'anti trans rights' simply to be pro women's rights and (b) just how very generous men are when it comes to giving away women's rights

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 07/08/2018 19:42

So the only “right” they’re being denied is the right to have everyone agree that they are actual real life women, even when sporting a beard and full tackle?

Who declared this to be a right??

Ereshkigal · 07/08/2018 19:44

Does Andy think the AWS is an LGBT issue rather than a women's issue?

He clearly thinks it's a denial of LGBT rights.

I left a comment on the buzzfeeed article. There was one other comment which was gender critical. It's gone. Unsure if the author deleted it or buzzfeed but I bet mine goes as well and it won't be me who deleted it

BettyDuMonde · 07/08/2018 20:20

Weird. He’s not very popular in Manchester...

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/manchesters-first-openly-gay-mayor-13851561

(Bury had a gay Lord Mayor in the exact same year, just didn’t make a big hoo-ha about it - so really it should read ‘joint first openly gay Lord Mayor in Manchester’ - not so impressive sounding)

Ereshkigal · 07/08/2018 20:25

Exactly. We should go and link that in the Buzzfeed comments. Dumb woke bros.

miri1985 · 07/08/2018 20:31

Maybe I'm wrong but I think Jennifer James' challenge will be successful and it will be established that only women and trans women with a GRC will be allowed on AWS. Which will lead Labour to abolish AWS because they couldn't bear to be exclusionary and gender critical feminists will be blamed because we wanted them to act legally

MipMipMip · 07/08/2018 20:31

I hope you've won the Euro millions because otherwise you're soon going to be skint.

ensuring all providers of public services commit to using evidence into the needs and experiences of all LGBT people when designing, commissioning and reviewing services

It would be nice if the providers could commit to using evidence into the needs and experiences of female people too.

Sarahconnor1 · 07/08/2018 20:58

I just had a search to see if the Greater Manchester mayor has a women's officer or advisory panel but couldn't find reference to anything. Now I might have missed it but.........

Eresh I think you might have a long wait.
