When you see threads plopped into FWR, especially the curious repeat of well worn subjects, I recommend you check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads being referenced on twitter with screen shots & flagging in either MNHQ or outlets to try & get articles commissioned.

OP posts:

R0wan - I've just reported that and asked if that would be possible. There is precedent for closing rather than deleting threads, and the case where there are parallel threads - unless one has gone seriously wrong, of course - closing one with a link to t'other (and ideally a link back from the ongoing one for reference) seems like it would be easy enough to manage and a better option than just deleting one.

VickyEadie · 18/09/2018 17:43

Do we know why the 'trans person/drugged up woman' thread was deleted?

R0wantrees · 18/09/2018 17:58

Errol thank you. I'm always a bit cautious of replicating posts on parallel threads (except for the most pertinent and a link to each)

ErrolTheDragon · 18/09/2018 18:04

I've just got a reply - that was nice and quick, much appreciated @HebeMumsnet!Smile

  • Thanks for your mail. That is a good point and something we will think about in future. We do usually tend to delete threads where there's lots of repetition and with this one it felt like it was all about one particular tweet and one Twitter user, so two threads just seemed a bit much really.

We will pass on your thoughts though. It's something we'd take on a case-by-case basis but it definitely could work with some threads.

Thanks again

R0wantrees · 19/09/2018 09:42

Errol That's great. From memory though, although the starting point was the same tweet comment, the threads evolved in quite a different way, with some interesting discussions.
My memory isn't good enough though to remember where the FWR went.

VickyEadie · 19/09/2018 09:47

So, it seems to me that the mods often delete threads for:

*what they call a 'pile on', which in most cases is the majority of people agreeing with each other (shock - most people on a Feminist board tend to have similar views)
*what they call 'repetition' in response to a specific stimulus in the OP (see comment in brackets above).

R0wantrees · 19/09/2018 10:03

I wonder if there's any possibility that the FWR thread which was prompted by the tweet about mastectomies might be reinstated but closed to comments with a link to the AIBU.

I think a number of MN members who had experienced breast cancer posted on it.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2018 12:56

Report your post and ask, R0wan. I am convinced MNHQ is receptive to constructive suggestions, and they don't actually want to piss members off if there's a straightforward solution.

R0wantrees · 19/09/2018 13:31

Thanks Errol, have done.

pombear · 19/09/2018 19:43

Bumping for the evening crowd -always good to bear in mind this PSA particularly for me personally as confused histories and 'I'm just interested' threads often get my spidey senses up (and sometimes they calm down again after further postings).

pombear · 19/09/2018 19:47

Though to be honest, I and many of us here could probably write a step by step manual right now of recognising Confused posters.

VickyEadie · 19/09/2018 19:48

pombear

I think you're right in this instance, however.

frogintheTyne · 21/09/2018 16:49

:-)

VickyEadie · 21/09/2018 19:28

It's Friday night - wagons in a circle, everyone.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 21/09/2018 19:29

a little bump

as some new threads this evening are setting off my spidey senses

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 21/09/2018 19:29

hah!

great minds Vicky

VickyEadie · 21/09/2018 19:30

Yes, indeed Bernard !

VickyEadie · 21/09/2018 19:32

Two very similar threads...

FermatsTheorem · 21/09/2018 19:40

Yes indeedy, I just noticed that. Almost identical, except for the sex of the children involved. (Or not. As the case may be. Depending on whether said children actually exist at all.)

VickyEadie · 21/09/2018 19:42

I'm going for not. Call me an old cynic.

FermatsTheorem · 21/09/2018 19:47

One was started by a poster who's been around for ever and hasn't set off my spidey senses before, the other...

So possibly one "not", one "maybe".

silentcrow · 22/09/2018 01:36

Gosh, there's a whole lot of threads reminding me of this Blackadder scene tonight.

LangCleg · 22/09/2018 13:02

Seating choice is coming to mind right now, apropos of nothing.

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 13:23

Mmm.

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 14:43

When people @ you for no reason it's probably good to give that some consideration. Especially when what you said bore no resemblance to their reply.
