There are quite a few good female historians on TV now, helped no doubt by Mary Beard forging the trail. As well as Helen Castor, mentioned above, there's Suzannah Lipscomb and Kate Williams. I also like Alice Roberts on historical subjects, although she has so many strings to her bow I should think the world has lost count. Maybe we need a "Kick misogyny out of history" campaign, along the lines of "Kick racism out of football".

We love love love Janina Ramirez in this house, she cannot SUPPRESS her passion for her topics, I love the way she stomps around being so gothic. She is massively charismatic and enthusiastic and it’s utterly contagious. (Not the charisma bit, sadly, I have no friends😩😩)

We love Janina Ramirez too. I love the fact she's a goth with a PHD on the symbolism of birds.

Bettany Hughes I like too.

Also, has Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou done anything recently? She's great.

He used to be on a lot of things when Simon Sharma was on a lot of things - and he didn't like Simon Sharma either. It rather puts me off him - that he finds so many people to publicly say he doesn't like.

Mary Beard is ace. Watched all her programmes before visiting Pompeii.

Still trying to figure out what is ugly about Mary Beard. She has a gorgeous warm face with intelligent eyes and fantastic hair. Not that that should matter as it's her outstanding mind and depth of knowledge that got her the job.

She's the best.

Love Mary Beard.

One of the highlights of my Twitter account is that she occasionally likes some of my tweets. And she replied to me once.

I love that she says what she thinks and backs it up with evidence. I've found the way she has been attacked at various times incredibly vile, but she deals with it like a pro. If I ever grow up, I should like to be just like her right down to the lovely red shoes.

I have never come across a more boring, monotonous drone on TV than Mr Starkey! He has the ability to make even the most fascinating subject seem tedious and dull. Whenever he is on the TV I find myself nodding off after 10 minutes or so.

Mary Beard, on the other hand, is dynamic and engaging and brings the subject to life, making me sit up and take notice.

I'm sure they both know their subject inside out. But knowledge of a subject doesn't make one a good teacher or, as in this case, a good presenter.

So chuffed that the great MB has popped into this thread, I would so love to have a good chat with her. Her recent lecture on the treatment of women through history was fascinating - I wonder what she makes of the whole transactivism thing. I expect she would be able to point to parallel movements in history and the impact on women's rights.

David Starkey? Meh.

BBC 4 has loads of great female historians on and it matters not one bit what they look like (although o do love Janina Ramirez's gothness). They are intelligent articulate women and long may it continue!

Absolutely nothing. Nothing whatsoever! She’s a perfectly normal looking woman, it’s SO bloody annoying to hear her described like that isn’t it? Women! Be decorative at all times or you’re worthless! Regardless of intelligence, personality, warmth, steely intellect or ability.

It’s my dream that one day we will be advanced enough as a species to have a ‘phwoar, look at the intellect on her’ moment or two :) still waiting....

Actually, sorry bowl, I’d have to disagree with you for once, in a somewhat, possibly unfeministy way (but sod it I’m going to say it anyway!). I don’t think she’s perfectly normal. Look at her, the sexy minx, she looks amazing. I love her hair, she looks kind and warm and generous and that makes her very attractive afaiac. And, of course, we know how intelligent she is. I’m mean, you know, just phwoar all round really.

Oh Pythagonal, only just seen that, yes she’s brilliant isn’t she? I’d watch her just reading a train timetable tbh, she’d still make it amazing!
