"Outspoken historian David Starkey — one of television's most prolific Tudor experts — claims that his broadcasting career has been ruined by the popularity of his female rivals."

Maybe they are just better than you David?
What an arsehole

Oooh I'd take Beard over Starkey any day of the week. So would DH.

Imsorrylhaventaclue · 17/07/2018 14:41

Thanks very much everyone for the great support, mary

OMG. I’m taking this at face value - Mary you’re one of my absolute heros I love your work and this woman in academia (albeit in a completely different field) thinks you’re an inspiration. Thank you.

Racecardriver · 17/07/2018 15:06

I have never actually heard to Mary beard though? Maybe he just resents carefully cultivating the old camp professor personality only for it to go out of fashion. To be fair a lot of the history presenters are utterly terrible, like Lucy what's her face. David Starkey isn't brilliant either but not that irritating... On screen, off it he is actually worse which is not an easy thing to do.

Pythagonal · 17/07/2018 15:13

Someone on Twitter let Mary know about this thread earlier. Mary replied that she would try to pop in and thank us.

Thank you Mary, for taking the time. Flowers

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 17/07/2018 15:18

That is fabulous! Thank you, Mary, both for your work and the example you set. I've not learnt how to do flowers yet!

Hexcode16 · 17/07/2018 15:18

As a classicist myself I have to say I’m absolutely thrilled that Mary Beard has made ancient history so popular and accessible.Smile

placemats · 17/07/2018 15:19

Love you too Mary, and I think you are beautiful as well as having a brain the size of Andromeda.

bellinisurge · 17/07/2018 15:19

Well, if she's reading: Mary, I love your presentational style and how you bring objects into your analysis.

And, for what it's worth, I love your choice of footwear.

Hexcode16 · 17/07/2018 15:20

Thanks Mary! Take no notice of that miserable old goat, we think you’re fab!SmileFlowers

HelsinkiMan · 17/07/2018 15:24

Flowers for Mary.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/07/2018 15:24

Is that the real MB? Shock

LanaorAna2 · 17/07/2018 15:26

Mary, you are brilliant. Mr Starkey, in the words of Arthur Scargill RIP, should be treated with 'the ignoral he deserves'.

I am doing classics on a Harvard course thanks to you. The Greeks always seemed too much of a boy's toy to me before you came along. Now I love them, pederasts and all. Thanks,

BitOutOfPractice · 17/07/2018 15:26

I'm having a fan girl moment!

BitOutOfPractice · 17/07/2018 15:27

Can I add I'm BitOutOfPractice BA (Hons) History Manchester 1988 Grin

If you are reading Mary, you are a true inspiration and I absolutely love your work.

Oooh, I've come over a bit starstruck Grin

I did history at uni and he once came and spoke to our history society. One of my friends, a first year who was actually quite self doubting (no reason he should have known that but still) and was just 18 and had been to a pretty crap school (again latter point wouldn’t be clear but did have broad working class accent) asked him a really interested and unchallenging question about his research. DS for some unfathomable reason took it as a personal challenge and launched into a really horrible attack on him, saying he knew state education was poor but it was shocking to see how ill informed its products could be all the same and all but reduced him to tears - was horrific and my friend was humiliated and didn’t dare ask questions of “big academics” who spoke again for years. None of the really impressive or frankly academically superior historians we saw speak on other times like Richard Evans or John Morrill were ever anything but encouraging of our questions even when they were probably daft! Was horrid.

SmellyHead · 17/07/2018 15:33

Odd that David Starkey can't work out why people would rather watch programmes presented by people with warmth, charm and wit instead of by him.

ginandtonicdontmindifido · 17/07/2018 15:40

He's the Donald Trump of historians....absolutely believes his view is the correct view and anyone who disagrees is either an idiot or stupid. I watched his views on "The Princes in the Tower" claiming well documented information as new evidence that absolutely confirms that Richard III was the only one to benefit and therefore MUST have killed them.....bloody hogwash.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 17/07/2018 15:42

How unpleasant. He's gone right down in my estimation.

weaselwords · 17/07/2018 15:46

I was just scrolling to the end of this thread to derail it with a bit of Mary Beard fan-girlism, but everyone beat me to it Grin

CigarsofthePharoahs · 17/07/2018 15:53

Mary Beard is brilliant.
David Starkey is meh.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2018 15:55

I was mildly curious as to whether Starkey got on with male historians any better and accidentally found this Grin

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 17/07/2018 15:58

I've had teachers and professors like Mary Beard and also like David Starkey. The ones like Mary Beard left me with an enduring love of their subject. The ones more like Starkey just left me cold.
The appearance of a person talking about history doesn't matter at all to me and I admire passion and detail much more than polish. I find Starkey tedious and now also petulant. If "old and ugly" is all he can find to throw at these women, they must be pretty fabulous!

Nuffaluff · 17/07/2018 16:02

Mary is beautiful inside and out. I’m afraid this guy is ugly on the inside - that’s why he’s not as popular.
His mannerisms really remind me of a character from The League of Gentlemen. The one who likes toads.
