Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are there any 'famous' supporters apart from Alison Moyet and Graham Linehan

Alison Moyet and Graham Linehan are the only two I've seen standing up for women in the current 'debate' between women and TRAs.

So, for example regarding women's rights and abortion laws, we had Caitlin Moran, Grace Dent Sharon Horgan etc. Publicly speaking up.

Having not been tuned in to the beginning of this, I wonder if I have missed the presence of any other well known public figures speaking out against misogony, who may help draw attention to the issue.

I know there are several courageous academics who are in the public eye, but I wonder when/if those in the media will step forward.

We all know Stephen's Fry's viewpoint sadly. I disagree with his opinions wholeheartedly, but he has voiced them now and I wonder who else will air their views next.

Ricky Gervais?

TheBiologicalWoman · 13/07/2018 17:12

Ah thanks.

I feel so rubbish only just catching up when this has been going on right in front of my face.

A retracted like tweet from JK Rowling?

LookTwoFingers · 13/07/2018 17:14

Sir Robert Winston.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 13/07/2018 17:16

Richard O'Brien of Crystal Maze and Rocky Horror fame.

A good chunk of RG’s latest stand up show covers this topic, specifically being forced to use and correct his language.

Baroquehavoc · 13/07/2018 17:18

Julie burchill

Robert Webb is very critical of gender, though I don't think he's said anything about trans.

TheBiologicalWoman · 13/07/2018 17:21

Thanks - you are giving me more to work with now.

What about the Caitlin and Grace I wonder?

MsBeee · 13/07/2018 17:26

Probably a large percentage of Parliament, but too chicken shit to speak up.

OrchidInTheSun · 13/07/2018 17:29

Thing about abortion is that it's supported by the whole of the woke left. Women's rights over trans* rights isn't. The woke position is the Penis News one.

Caitlin and Grace are both hacks. Hadley Freeman, Salli Hughes, Janice Turner and James Kirkup are all hacks and speaking up. Private Eye doesn't buy into the bullshit (so I guess that means Hislop doesn't either).

I suspect people who know that they need the woke generation to make money are too scared to say much, however much they think this is batshit

TheBiologicalWoman · 13/07/2018 17:42

It's probably easy for me to feel let down by the silence, but I'm not in the public eye.

If somebody like JK added her voice it would be wonderful (allow me to naively fantasise)

I really am so grateful to the likes of Dr Kathleen Stock and the others whose professional and personal reputations face attack every day.

My impression was that JK Rowling is on side. JK Rwoling has contracts with film and book companies. JK Rowling has given away lots of money and may not be able to buy her way out of contracts.

SuburbanRhonda · 13/07/2018 17:46

the Crystal Maze presenter was asked about trans-exclusionary feminists who claim that surgery doesn’t make someone a woman.

Interesting use of the word “claim”.

I’d be inclined to use the word “know”.

Magpiesarehuge · 13/07/2018 17:46

You don’t have to be very terfy to havevthe Trans community turn on you. I’d say Alison Moyet is pro trans - but it only takes on sentence, one twitter like, one slip. Like Moyet, Jeni Murray, Alice Eve, Rose McGowan, Ian Rankin, JK Rowling, Glinner, Robert Webber, Gervaise, Idiche, Jack Monroe

Destinysdaughter · 13/07/2018 18:16

I’d love to know what Jo Brand thinks about this, she’s v switched on about women generally and used to get an awful lot of abuse from men when she first started out.

There’s also some famous lesbians in the media who haven’t said anything about this publicly probably cos it’s seen as career suicide?

Even Janet Street Porter hasn’t said a dickey bird about it as far as I’m aware?

Childrenofthestones · 13/07/2018 18:21

Considering many of the people listed are well established in their careers would you describe them as cowards for not speaking out if they disagree with all this bullshit?

TheBiologicalWoman · 13/07/2018 18:29

@Destinys
Great suggestions.
I can only think it's fear and not the fact they can't see what's happening to women's rights.

Janet is so vocal usually.

Rupert Everett has warned of the dangers of transitioning children and called Caitlyn Jenner a cross dressing man. Think it's really important an openly gay man (who wore 'girls' clothes until.he was 14) speaks the truth about this.

WibblePod · 13/07/2018 18:39

Alison Moyet was very circumspect and polite and got tons of abuse. Graham Linehan is a man, and while taking abuse, is nothing compared to what a woman would get.
Rose McGowan gets incredible abuse on everything she tweets, and all she did was mention that trans women don't have the same experience of puberty because they don't get periods or grow breasts.
I have some sympathy for female celebrities on this. Any famous woman openly speaking out will get absolutely hounded. She'd almost certainly get huge abuse including rape and death threats. She'd also be a target in real life for publicity stunts (or even violence) like when Andi Dier confronted McGowan and accused her of genocide (ffs) when the poor woman was bravely giving a talk about her own rape.
It'd only take one Tara Wolf deciding she needs to be made an example of for something really bad to happen.
And it won't die down quickly either.
I'm anonymous on here and on Twitter because I'm afraid the threats might follow me into real life and I'm not a public figure in any way.
I suspect there are plenty of famous women who are torn about speaking out because they know just how bad it'll be.

Hannah Gadsby. Netflix has her last show.

Gia Milinovich, partner of Brian Cox.

Destinysdaughter · 13/07/2018 18:43

Indeed. There’s a horrendous individual on Twitter at the moment who has posted photos of the children of GC women from Facebook. Lots of pp have reported them to Twitter but nothing has been done about it. Angry

DJLippy · 13/07/2018 19:16

There are several prominent figures who I think should/could be open to #peaktrans

- Mary Beard. Despite distancing herself from 'terfs' she's made a career in which she examines the way that women were systematically excluded from public life and erased from the historical record.

Catlyn Moran. She cannot be buying this bullshit. I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall at the Moran Sunday dinner table

Deborah Francis-White. Comedienne who hosts the podcast 'Guilty Feminist' is probably the most cripplingly apologetic cis-feminist alive. HOWEVER, she knows all about cult like behavior after growing up a Jehovah Witness (and writing jokes about what a bunch of crazy cultists they all are.). I am SURE she see's the parallels. I would LOVE to #peaktrans this woman!

Carloine Lucas. She's stepping down as leader of Green Party soon, is she sick of political devides like this one? It beggars belief that a party who derides climate change deniers can simultaneously endorse the Gendered Soul Heresy...

Someone once posted on here about Caroline, she's apparently a wide eyed angry how dare you question transgenderism type.

DJLippy · 13/07/2018 19:21

Lionel Shriever. Definitely a terf. She's the definition of the zeitgeist writer. If I had any money I would bet her next book is gonna be about a trans-widow...
