Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are there any 'famous' supporters apart from Alison Moyet and Graham Linehan

Alison Moyet and Graham Linehan are the only two I've seen standing up for women in the current 'debate' between women and TRAs.

So, for example regarding women's rights and abortion laws, we had Caitlin Moran, Grace Dent Sharon Horgan etc. Publicly speaking up.

Having not been tuned in to the beginning of this, I wonder if I have missed the presence of any other well known public figures speaking out against misogony, who may help draw attention to the issue.

I know there are several courageous academics who are in the public eye, but I wonder when/if those in the media will step forward.

We all know Stephen's Fry's viewpoint sadly. I disagree with his opinions wholeheartedly, but he has voiced them now and I wonder who else will air their views next.

I can see the

Tbh this is a bit of a nothing thread as. I could not care less what famous people think they don't on the whole tend to do a lot of work around theae. issues but just have a view. the same goes for a lot of famous trans poeple many of which just. talk about stuff and very few actually do the work. very famously in the trans tipping point year when lots. of them were getting a boost to there profiles they declared this problem sorted and yes maybe for them it was but the rest of us knew this was coming.

Caitlin Moran's regular piece in the Times mag today strikes me as being 'gender critical' ...limiting choice on gendered lines is bad for everyone and she's mostly focussed on girls. Pro girls, pro gender nonconformists without being remotely anti trans.

Not the most important issue and one of the cases where there really is absolutely no need for conflict between females and trans people, but I think she's covered the bases well and with appropriate balance.

Lynsey Sharp (athlete) is GC, I would wager given her experiences running against athletes who arguably should not be competing in the same events as her

Andy Murray is a feminist, I wonder if he is GC too

Caitlin Moran has been supportive of trans stuff in her writing. I have sometimes wondered if she really means it though, or at least to what extent. I remember reading some of the allegedly supportive stuff she wrote about Caitlyn Jenner and just thinking nah, love. Although a lot of trans activists found that whole thing genuinely embarrassing so maybe that doesn't tell us much.

Looktwofingers
Robert Winston?
He played a huge part for the TRAs in his submission to the House of Lords when the GRA was debated. They wheeled him in to tell everybody that clever scientists think sex is terribly awfully hard to classify and intersex exists don't you know and so we had probably better go with ladybrain as the most reliable measure of who is female and who isn't.
His submission was choreographed to shut up those who were fighting to retain objective definitions of sex and gender.

I was horrified by the damage his contribution made.

(I've just read Hansard)

I know this thread is four years old but it’s so interesting to look back on how far this debate has evolved!

I agree!

I hadn't known about Prof Lord Winston's previous position on this. He has clearly swapped sides now. Hasn't he?

He very much has. Perhaps he was thinking he was helping a tiny minority etc etc, and like most of us has since realised his kindness could be weaponised against him, all women, science itself...

Aw, I remember that day. I was absolutely gutted by the finding in Maya's JR. And then ....

I was absolutely at this stage back then. I wasn’t really aware of the extent of “trans women are women”, to the point of them being in female prisons and rape shelters until 2020.
I was definitely in the “it’s much kinder to pretend they’re women the same as me. Why harm can it do?” back in 2018.
There were a few moments that made me raise an eyebrow (Caitlyn Jenner winning woman of the year after being a woman for a whole 8 months and killing an actual woman that same year) but it was so much easier to ignore it and go along with the kind girls.
The prison issue gave me a good old slap to the face.

I was shamefully naive and am completely in awe of all these posters who were so aware so early.

I remember this thread! Or at least a very similar one. I realised something was up in spring 2018 and I remember really wishing more public figures would d'art discussing it. It's a fascinating time portal to before that moment when jkr stood with maya.

I'd completely forgotten that Richard o'bie

Manderleyagain · 02/12/2022 12:57

Sorry posted too fast- that Richard O'brien had said anything.

Sooo much has changed. Puuuuuullllllllll.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2022 13:08

Yes, a lot has changed. Women like Martina Navratilova being told to educate themselves and doing exactly that.

bebanjo · 03/12/2022 08:40

i think Ben Elton is GC, read, ‘identity crisis’
