Is transgenderism a cult?

Macareaux · 13/07/2018 09:35

I normally give anything that might have a hint of a conspiracy theory about it a wide berth.

So I'm wondering what others think of this essay by Jenn Smith, who is (by his own definition) a trans identified male.

I find many of the arguments compelling and the only area where I might part company is in the suggestion that for people like Trudeau this is some part of a bigger plan. I think Trudeau is just painfully woke.

Yes it's using all the behaviours of cultic abuse plus recruit young members at vulnerable times of their lives under the guise of "care" and an ideology that promises belonging to a group focused on an unrealistic vision.

I have read Jenn Smith's work a couple of times and resonate with a lot of it.

Cults are not conspiracy theories but abuse in plain sight - they all have psychopaths at the middle of them who gain money and power through their mind control of innocent people. They destroy lives and choices - cults are a license to kill, mostly unregulated unless children are involved. People are drained of their assets of money and time and they don't understand how they are being mistreated - just as in intimate partner violence and coercive control. People don't generally understand the malevolent mind control forces at play in cultic abuse. It's all their - the live bombing, the promise of a better life, the isolating from mainstream society, the scapegoating and othering of anyone who recognises what's really going on.

First thing is to get the kids off social media which has silenced any reasonable voices and is weaponised to recruit.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 13/07/2018 09:54

The wolf in Red Riding Hood was dressed in a cunning disguise in a place where you wouldn't have expected to find them. They try to mind control RRH by gaslighting her instincts - luckily she escaped - many don't because they have never been taught how to trust their inner knowing

AuntMsVanillaRose · 13/07/2018 09:57

No. It is not a cult. Transphobes want you to think it is.

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:02

clickied your link for you

article

Imchlibob · 13/07/2018 10:03

Here's a clicky link. Reading it now.

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:04

that was very interesting, although it got pretty tin foil hat by the end

but yes, there are parallels between cult members and transactivists for sure

humans do have a desire to conform, which is the only possible explanation for anyone nodding along to the phrase 'female penis'

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:06

@AuntMsVanillaRose

ya see, I'm getting fed up of people plopping in here and calling me transphobic then fucking off

have some (literal or metaphorical) balls, come back and back up your statement please

FesteringCarbuncle · 13/07/2018 10:07

It has all the hallmarks of a cult
Nobody is allowed to question the ideology
#nodebate
Encouraging children to find their 'rainbow' family and not listen to their actual family
Excluding and abusing anyone who dares to speak against the accepted narrative
Watch the Scientology documentary. It could easily be talking about TRA methods

drwitch · 13/07/2018 10:07

I don't think its a cult, i think its a really unfortunate interaction between misogyny on the left, lazy attachment to stereotypes on the right and tribal politics.
Your position on the "bathroom ban" in the US is seen as a symbol of whether you are a liberal or a SJW for example
Much easier for institutions to be open to self -identification then think about how their practices and codes put people in boxes

AuntMsVanillaRose · 13/07/2018 10:11

@ReluctantCamper
I don't recall interacting with you before. How interesting that you equate female courage with "having balls", though. Not very feminist, imho.

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:12

I agree drwitch, I think we are suffering from a really unfortunate synergy

transactivism gives people the opportunity to simultaneously be (either consciously or subconsciously) unbelievably misogynist AND look like they're nice and progressive

as you say, it's the perfect outlet for this mix

not to say that TRA's aren't employing cult like methods though, deliberately or not

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:12

still not backing up your statement AuntMsVanillaRose?

let's hear it, come on

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2018 10:13

Well these are some links and signs of a cult. I'll let everyone read these and make up their own minds.

Social aspects of cult-like behavior
For a group to be a cult in the social sense, many of the following characteristics would have to be present. For a group to be a cult in the doctrinal sense, essentials (in this case of the Christian faith) would have to be violated. Some of the characteristics are listed below.

1) Submission:
1 - Complete, almost unquestioned trust in the leadership.
2 - Leaders are often seen as prophets, apostles, or special individuals with unusual connections to God. This helps a person give themselves over psychologically to trusting someone else for their spiritual welfare.
3 - Increased submission to the leadership is rewarded with additional responsibilities and/or roles, and/or praises, increasing the importance of the person within the group.

2) Exclusivity
1 - Their group is the only true religious system, or one of the few true remnants of God's people.

3) Persecution complex
1 - Us against them mentality. Therefore, when someone (inside or outside of the group) corrects the group in doctrine and/or behavior, it is interpreted as persecution, which then is interpreted as validation.

4) Control
1 - Control of members' actions and thinking through repeated indoctrination and/or threats of loss of salvation, or a place to live, or receiving curses from God, etc.

5) Isolation
1 - Minimizing contact of church members with those outside the group. This facilitates a further control over the thinking and practices of the members by the leadership.

6) Love Bombing
1 - Showing great attention and love to a person in the group by others in the group, to help transfer emotional dependence to the group.

7) Special Knowledge
1 - Instructions and/or knowledge are sometimes said to be received by a leader(s) from God. This leader then informs the members.
2 - The Special Knowledge can be received through visions, dreams, or new interpretations of sacred scriptures such as the Bible.

8) Indoctrination
1 - The teachings of the group are repeatedly drilled into the members, but the indoctrination usually occurs around Special Knowledge.

9) Salvation
1 - Salvation from the judgment of God is maintained through association and/or submission with the group, its authority, and/or its Special Knowledge.

10) Group Think
1 - The group's coherence is maintained by the observance to policies handed down from those in authority.
2 - There is an internal enforcement of policies by members who reward "proper" behavior, and those who perform properly are rewarded with further inclusion and acceptance by the group.

11) Cognitive Dissonance
1 - Avoidance of critical thinking and/or maintaining logically impossible beliefs and/or beliefs that are inconsistent with other beliefs held by the group.
2 - Avoidance of and/or denial of any facts that might contradict the group's belief system.

12) Shunning
1 - Those who do not keep in step with group policies are shunned and/or expelled.

13) Gender Roles
1 - Control of gender roles and definitions.
2 - Severe control of gender roles sometimes leads to sexual exploitation.

14) Appearance Standards
1 - Often a common appearance is required and maintained. For instance, women might wear prairie dresses, and/or their hair in buns, and/or no makeup, and/or the men might all wear white short-sleeved shirts, and/or without beards, or all wear beards.

Transgenderism as a movement uses some of the techniques that cults use to recruit and control members behaviour.
But there's no charismatic figurehead to give it full cult status.

To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:

Loss of choice and free will.
Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humour.
Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors.
Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships.
Poor judgement.
Physical deterioration.
Malnutrition.
Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia.
Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.

Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors

well that is a side effect of transactivism for sure

by god those people are earnest

NoNotheresnolyrics · 13/07/2018 10:16

It’s an ideology that we should not be forced to believe in.

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:18

cor your post was hard to understand AuntMsVanillaRose

literally nobody here cares if you call yourself cis.

you believe cis is an accurate description of yourself

i get it. i think your are colluding in your own oppression but i get it. call yourself cis

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:19

you can even call me a terf AuntMsVanillaRose and I wouldn't report your post.

it would be stupid and inaccurate, but knock yourself out

AuntMsVanillaRose · 13/07/2018 10:19

@RedToothBrush

Thanks for proving that there is no trans cult.

Also, it's the anti-trans people who are suggesting that nazis weren't the bad guys. So - bleuuuch.

Floorplan · 13/07/2018 10:19

If it looks like a cult and it acts like a cult, it's a cult.

It's a cult.

Branleuse · 13/07/2018 10:22

its a really bizarre cult. It seems to have different factions thoough. Youve got the trans women are women thing which is bizarre and so anti science. It is like speaking to religious zealots who have recently found God.

Then youve got the fifty thousand different new genders aspect, which is just totally hilarious and is likely to blow over soon
I have no idea who could possibly take it seriously. Look at this list, and then click on the logo to read their advice board

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 10:22

and AuntMsVanillaRose i don't really care about changing rooms and toilets. i've shared them with transwomen with no ill effects. i understand that others care though and respect their right to do so

i care about women's sport

why should we accept a lie than men can become women and watch women's ability to participate in sport crumble away?

i care about women's representation in parliament

all women short lists changed the landscape in the house of commons. got us up to around 1/3 of MPs being women. taking us to the heady heights of being 32nd in the world in terms of equal representation of women in politics

why should men take spaces on those shortlists?

do these beliefs make me trabsphobic?

Bowlofbabelfish · 13/07/2018 10:23

Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors

Actually laughed at that one, but yes.

I’ll add another - being unable to have the piss taken out of you without getting violent. That’s never a good sign.

Bowlofbabelfish · 13/07/2018 10:23

Do you believe humans can change sex?
