House of Lords debate on 'gender recognition process'

There's a 'short debate' in the House of Lords on 'gender recognition process and the Government's LGBT action plan' this afternoon.

The Conservative peer Lord Lucas (does anyone know anything about him and what his views are likely to be?) has called it and so far the other peers who are listed as speaking are Baroness Barker, Lord Cashman, Baroness Featherstone, Baroness Gale, Lord Scriven and Baroness Williams. As at least four of those of Liberal Democrats I'm not optimistic that women's concerns about self ID will be reflected.

Details are here: calendar.parliament.uk/calendar/Lords/All/2018/7/12/Daily

She is worse than clueless.

She is a fucking disgrace.

I cannot believe the way she has described women who stand up for women’s rights. I am utterly disgusted by what she said today.

KokoandAllBall · 12/07/2018 22:26

the discriminatory practices which allow women male-free spaces

And once again, not a peep about allowing women into male-only spaces. Isn't there a meeting place in parliament somewhere which is still men only?

By the way, don't transmen get tired of 99.5% of the discourse always being about transwomen and what they want and should be entitled to? (There was even a debate about Scar-Jo playing a transman the other week which was taken over by furious transwomen saying they should have been considered for the part.)

foxyliz26 · 12/07/2018 23:39

Forget the HOL /HOC read the white paper on Brexit , the ECJ will still have some control on all issues

most Lesbians /Gays /Transsexual people are against self ID , the Transsexuals are mostly against the Transgender Activists too

just remember to complete and return your consultation document , imstead of upsetting some really decent Old School Transsexuals who just want to live a quiet life

sadly many femminists have upset many decent people and some intersex people, which has had some bearing on local G&O services , as the one woman fighting the cuts has been destroyed on here

Floorplan · 13/07/2018 06:56

I have been tossing and turning about the speeches given by Lady Feather yesterday. I think it's absolutely disgusting what she said. It amounts to abusive behaviour on her part in my opinion. I'm really having difficulty getting over it.

Pratchet · 13/07/2018 07:15

So anti-woman, as are Rat's posts along with all the other TRA who deign to visit.

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 07:24

I know Floor , I was in tears when I posted yesterday about it. I am going to take every sentence of that paragraph and write her a response.

The original New Women were the first wave feminists of the 1890s who rode bicycles, sought higher education and the vote, and eschewed marriage as they did not want to be subservient to men.

Floorplan · 13/07/2018 07:28

There are some feminists who have brought shame, I think, to the name of feminist by the level of hatred and vitriol that they have levelled at trans women.

This line makes me feel physically sick the more I read it. It makes me want to go in the viewing gallery at the house of Lords and throw down leaflets with terf is a slur material complete with barbed wire baseball bats.

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 07:29

Wikipedia entry on the New Woman

I note this because of Lady Featherstone’s insistence that we should be kind to ‘these new women’ - which shows ignorance of history, apart from anything else, and appropriates a term which was about women’s independence and freedoms, not subservience.

Floorplan · 13/07/2018 07:29

I've been in the holidays before they check your bags but Paper is not what they are looking for (?)

Floorplan · 13/07/2018 07:30

HoL not holiday (I wish)

Floorplan · 13/07/2018 07:31

Katara what you said yesterday was amazing, just read it.

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 07:39

Well, Lady Featherstone will be the person who propels me off the internet and into real life activism about this.
(And thank you, I was not looking for compliments, more to say I share your response to the comments)

Snappity · 13/07/2018 07:42

I came to speak in this debate today because I am an uber-feminist. There are some feminists who have brought shame, I think, to the name of feminist by the level of hatred and vitriol that they have levelled at trans women. That is why I am standing here today. How little they understand this community. They should be welcoming and understanding to these new women. They should have humanity, kindness and inclusiveness in their souls. This fanatical assault is not feminism, it is false protectionism—mistaken protectionism. So to the faux feminists I say: regain your humanity and understanding. To be trans is challenging enough—with the sort of challenges that you have to go through to work in a world that has traditionally been totally binary and is now coming to grips with the fact that perhaps it is not the way we all thought it was. The attempted suicide rate should be indication enough that this is a community that needs our love and support. I am glad that we are going to try to do better.

That is a paragraph from Lady Featherstone, a former Equalities Minister. To all those who read FWR, gender critical feminism is not the only sort of feminism. Lady Featherstone illustrates an inclusive kind in her remarks, the sort of feminism that I understand.

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 07:55

Woooo, gold star ⭐️ for Snappity for copy and pasting a paragraph we have all read and commented on 🤦‍♀️. Stellar contribution there.

There are many kinds of feminism, yes, but they usually don’t include people with penises or former penises.

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 08:03

But while you are here Snappity maybe you could answer two questions I had for you from other threads, which have not yet been answered:

  1. What does non-binary mean?
  1. How can you take court action with little or no funding?

Apologies for de-rail of thread.

Snappity · 13/07/2018 08:20

There are many kinds of feminism, yes, but they usually don’t include people with penises or former penises.

Well according to Lady Featherstone, a former Equalities Minister who describes herself as an "Uber feminist" trans women are women as you can see from the quote

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 08:25

I need to look up Lady Featherstone’s credentials as a feminist to see how much credence I give her self-description

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 08:30

In a old posh man’s world discrimination has different meaning ‘discriminating taste’ etc.

Yes I agree with you Betty. However I think it's a much more loaded term to most people.

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 08:33

Rat, if you think for one minute that women are going to back down and be quiet if self ID goes through you’re going tone sorely disappointed.

Carry on celebrating the destruction of women’s rights. We who care about those rights will never, ever stop fighting for them. Sorry about that.

This.

Snappity · 13/07/2018 08:34

How can you take court action with little or no funding?

You put your house on the line if necessary.

bigoldscaredycat · 13/07/2018 08:35

Lady Featherstone is an Uber MRA. How fucking dare she call herself a feminist, the way she has spoken about actual feminists who are trying to stick up for women is utterly revolting.

Just your daily reminder too in response to Snappity’s daily ramblings - ‘inclusive’ is Newspeak for ‘about men’.

Snappity · 13/07/2018 08:35

What does non-binary mean?

Someone whose ID is neither male nor female

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 08:36

Well according to Lady Featherstone, a former Equalities Minister who describes herself as an "Uber feminist" trans women are women as you can see from the quote

She's an "uber feminist" as much as I'm the Queen of Sheba. Idiot.

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 08:37

Everyone in the country is non binary. I for one can't wait to get my special non binary ID.

KataraJean · 13/07/2018 08:41

Well, no, putting your house on the line is not having little or no funding. A house is an asset. And once you have exhausted that funding, what then?
