Such fantastic news and real progress. The leader of the opposition has come out in favour of the Nordic model.

This is real progress. Sarah Champion and Jess Phillips must have been instrumental in explaining why this model is needed to Jeremy Corbyn who had previously voiced support for full decriminalisation. Full decriminalisation legally favours the corporate prostitution industry (pimps and buyers) over the safety and dignity of the women who end up in prostitution.

The Nordic model is the name for a legal approach to prostitution where the woman (or man) selling themselves for sex is decriminalised and is not prosecuted. Support services are provided for people leaving prostitution. Pimps, brothel owners and buyers who make money out of or buy women for sex are criminalised.

This model is in use in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Canada, France, and Ireland. Rates of trafficking drop when the model is implemented as it reduces the demand for buying women for sex.

Wow, that’s encouraging.

Tackytriceratops · 08/07/2018 07:58

Great news!

R0wantrees · 08/07/2018 08:12

That may displease those who seem to have a lot of power in the NUS, especially some LGBT, Trans, Women's officers.

NUS briefing paper 2018:
"this resource aims to educate and inform students and students’ unions on the challenges that student sex workers face and provide you with ideas and advice on how better to support them and their cause."

"Why have we created this
guide?
In 2016, NUS worked with ECP and SWARM to conduct the first piece of research of its kind into the experiences of student sex workers. From the NUS Student Sex Work Survey, we found that student sex workers say they are not getting the help they need. Since then, policy has passed through the NUS LGBT Women’s and Trans Campaigns to continue our commitment of solidarity and support, and to further the work that we do for student sex workers" (continues)

"Nordic Model: Different ways of selling sex are legal, but buying it is illegal. This shifts criminality from the sex worker onto the client. Some see this is a good move, however this often makes it more dangerous for the sex worker"

Yeah

enoughisenough12 · 08/07/2018 08:21

That's a little bit of progress. Well done to Sarah Champion & Jess Phillips.

LangCleg · 08/07/2018 08:44

Wow. One hopes conference will endorse this.

UpstartCrow · 08/07/2018 08:50

Don't Bromentum have to support JC?

AngryAttackKittens · 08/07/2018 08:51

About bloody time!

NotTerfNorCis · 08/07/2018 09:11

That's good news. His blind support of trans ideology (and Brexit) had been very disappointing.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 09:16

Disappointing but not surprising. Good old Jeremy following along like an obedient wee lap dog and throwing the real world safety of women (and others) under the bus yet again.
Fits the trend for him since he was apparently politically neutered when he became opposition leader.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 09:19

Also this - women who end up in prostitution. implies we somehow just fall into the sex industry. No agency, no choice, it's just something that happens to us.

It's not. We do have agency and many of us choose sex work.
The Nordic Model makes our work more dangerous by increasing stigma and pushing sex work out of sight. It is most definitely not a good thing for anyone working in the industry.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 09:21

I've included a lot of relevant information and links in this thread (already linked to by R0wantrees):

Hi Brazen, the number of women who choose prostitution are a vanishingly small number. The vast majority are vulnerable abused women. The law needs to protect the largest number of people and take a stand that women are not commodities that should be bought and sold.

Hyper capitalism which promotes that anything should be able to be bought or sold if there is a market for it suits the prostitution industry. It doesn’t make it right.

Jeremy Corbyn can go fuck himself. And when he's done, he can fuck himself some more.

Hi Brazen, the number of women who choose prostitution are a vanishingly small number. The vast majority are vulnerable abused women.

  • That's incorrect. Please see the links on the other thread (or I'll start copying and pasting all my posts here and nobody wants that Grin)

The law needs to protect the largest number of people and take a stand that women are not commodities that should be bought and sold.

  • Women like me are the majority and the Nordic Model does not do anything to protect us or the vulnerable women in the industry. As I said, it makes our work more dangerous.

No women are not commodities that should be bought and sold, we absolutely agree on that. However, sex workers are willingly selling a service nor our bodies.
My body is still mine before, during and after a booking. I have sexual agency and I believe women have the right to choose who we have sex with, when we have sex, and the reasons we choose to have sex with someone are our own.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 09:51

selling a service not our bodies* that should say.

Writersblock2 · 08/07/2018 09:52

He’s still an idiot and this isn’t enough to make me vote for him. Is that what he thinks he’s doing? Appealing to women? He was very vocally anti-women. He can go fuck himself.

Writersblock2 · 08/07/2018 09:53

I support the Nordic model. I don’t support Corbyn.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 08/07/2018 10:46

Really good news. A thing that has been making me feel most like we're descending into a dystopian nightmare has been the apparently blanket support across our political parties and leaders for the decriminalisation of commercialised rape.

Yy to hoping it's endorsed at conference

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/07/2018 10:46

I support the Nordic model. I don’t support Corbyn

Yes me too.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/07/2018 11:13

The SNP conference endorsed the Nordic model at conference last year but so far has done nothing to take it forward unfortunately.

BettyDuMonde · 08/07/2018 11:40

Good.

Well done Sarah Champion!

Tackytriceratops · 08/07/2018 11:43

I don't support corbyn. But do think if he publicly backed the Nordic model, all his brain washed sheep fans will take notice and believe It's The Right Thing To Do.
