Interesting word "academic".
It usually implies "knowledgeable" -- or, more specifically "knowledgeable about the subject they are talking about"
But Stock's expertise is in French and Philosophy, particularly the philosophy of fiction. Not psychology, endocrinology, neuroscience, medicine, biology, or anything that is actually relevant.

Much the same goes for Professor Greer -- big on academic credentials: but demonstrably low on actual knowledge of the subject.

NowtSalamander · 27/06/2018 14:21

In the context of what she’s talking about here, she needs to be expert in one thing: being a woman.

Wow, that is an excellent article. Superbly analysed and argued.

rememberatime · 27/06/2018 14:25

So if someone has an opinion or wants to express themselves about a subject they must demonstrably be an expert?

Damnthat... does that mean we should ignore your opinion?

LangCleg · 27/06/2018 14:30

The author only mentions Mumsnet once but it is clear from the context that a lot of her article is drawing on the experience of gender critical feminists on this forum. People are watching.

Yes, they are. Which is why it is important that we should stay. Also why it is important that we should not be distracted by inimical posters and are much better off when we talk to each other.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 27/06/2018 14:32

Fan girling over here too. BlushGrin

Star applause!

Damn, it is brilliant to see you admit so clearly that you will accept the knowledge of those of us qualified and working in those areas, as knowing what they are talking about. :)

ALittleBitofVitriol · 27/06/2018 14:41

Straight to the ad hominem hey Damn?
Way to make the article's point!

bombadino · 27/06/2018 14:42

Great article.
I miss Germaine. I'm off to the bookstore now possibly will find her there.

Well if you want biology I’m here to assist. I do get the feeling that factual science isn’t the strong point of the Vocal activist subset though.

Philosophy of fiction seems rather... well jolly spot on I’d say.
But she’s talking about belief systems and the way they are used to police the ways women’s words are used. Which is relevant to the discussion, this board, the twittersphere (my goodness, such a wanky term I can’t believe I just wrote that...) and social media / public engagement.

As she says, humans can’t change sex and that’s fairly basic biology - kids should be aware of that by GCSE at the very latest. She shouldn’t need to explain that.

If anyone does believe that humans can change sex, that would be fairly world shattering stuff. So I’d say to them, please do share the mechanism behind it.

ImpYCelyn · 27/06/2018 14:43

Excellent article! Thanks for the link 🙂

OlennasWimple · 27/06/2018 14:48

Great article

EstrellaDamn · 27/06/2018 15:21

That's a great piece. I have to say 'Watch your mouth' actually chilled me to the bone a little. That's exactly how this silencing feels: threatening, masculine, dark.

LangCleg · 27/06/2018 15:44

Yes. The absolute entitlement of the political demands - highly threatening. I think Kathleen has done so well to write about it in a distinctly womanly, humorous way but without ducking the threatening and hostile environment women find themselves in.

LangCleg · 27/06/2018 15:45

Absolutely. And she nails it.

BeyondFemaleElitist · 27/06/2018 15:45

Yy Lang and estrella

BesmirchingMotherhood · 27/06/2018 16:08

Did damnthat just make Stock’s point for her?

NaturalBornWoman · 27/06/2018 16:28

Did damnthat just make Stock’s point for her?

Yep, happens every time.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/06/2018 16:29

Besmirching, I think Damn may have done exactly that m

BesmirchingMotherhood · 27/06/2018 16:32

Bravo damnthat 😀

Roystonv · 27/06/2018 16:34

Very powerful, I live in a rural northern county and genuinely feel that without mn I would know nothing of what is going on. My bright degree educated dd has no knowledge of this as it is not common knowledge round us. By the time it is widely known as to what is happening it will be too late. I hate that such a minority are changing the rules when they already have human rights and there are far more important matters to campaign about.

LangCleg · 27/06/2018 16:34

All the LOLs!

Belindabauer · 27/06/2018 16:40

Great article, especially the last sentence.
