Gender vs Sex. Is it too late to reclaim the correct meanings?

The two are used so interchangeably in common parlance. But is it worth correcting people and organisations or is the conflation too deeply ingrained?

I was prompted to think about this by a tweet from 50:50 Parliament (but then remembered that they count men in dresses towards their 50% goal.)

Gender and sex will always be distinctive from one another to me and I will teach my future children also. It is important for people to understand the origin of language

Well, the origin of gender has nothing to do with its current meaning so that's not really the point and I don't think teaching your children about grammatical genders and kinds will be in the least bit helpful.

I think what I would like to see, from a clarity perspective, is a legally agreed definition of gender because it is being used in a very different way now from even 10 years ago and because the usage and meaning has changed so much so quickly and become so important, it would be good to have a clear definition we could use in framing legislation.

Good to read about all the progress that's been made with local authorities. Small steps and all that.
