Isn't that great? Terry has got the fastest ever meet time for a girl! Poor Bridget is now third.

I wonder if Terry and Andraya will now get university scholarships based on their poor track performances when compared to their male peers?

I wonder if colleges would award women’s scholarships to trans women in this sort of situation?

JellySlice · 07/06/2018 16:37

The behaviour expected from the female athletes, the societal pressure imposed upon them and the effects on their futures are not new. [[

FermatsTheorem · 07/06/2018 17:01

Very good article, Jelly, and explains perfectly why the "well, why not all boycott/speak out" option really isn't as easy as people make it out to be.

Loopytiles · 07/06/2018 17:04

What are the universities’ scholarship policies on this?

FermatsTheorem · 07/06/2018 17:06

I expect we'll find out in a year or so when Andraya and Terry get athletics scholarships to top schools, Loopy.

OrchidInTheSun · 07/06/2018 17:08

That is a really good article Jelly. Loopy - I think they would be entitled. Wellesley, Bryn Mawr and Barnard (women only universities) already accept trans students so I can't see how or why they would bar them from applying for scholarships

Meant to link to article. One college says 8% of students identify as transwomen Shock

That’s really shit - using unfair biological advantages in sports to take places for young women.

FermatsTheorem · 07/06/2018 17:14

Orchid your point upthread about how mediocre their performances would be among the male teenagers (and remember, these teens are not yet on any sort of hormone treatment - they are still competing with full levels of testosterone) is a recurring theme.

Fallon Fox - absolutely nowhere in the men's rankings at MMA, transitioned at an age when most athletes of both sexes are retiring, then went on to dominate women's fighting.

Laurel Hubbard - again, nowhere of any significance in men's weightlifting, again, transitioned at an age when most athletes of both sexes would have retired, suddenly takes women's records and picks up silver at the world championships.

Hannah Mouncey - retired early thirties after career as male Olympian in handball, again wants to take up women's Aussie rules football at an age when most people of both sexes would be retiring, has already broken a woman's leg during a game.

Anyone spotting a theme here?

numberseven · 07/06/2018 17:21

Besides the unfairness of the situation, I'm also greatly annoyed by the gaslighty "winning isn't everything" bullshit they're trying to push on the natal female competitors. It's like it's just girl sports, who cares, let those two have at it and be a nice girl and don't make a fuss.

So the women get treated like women, female socialization and all that, and the transwomen get treated like men and catered to. As always.

OrchidInTheSun · 07/06/2018 17:23

Definitely noticing a theme, yes. And I do think this will become more widespread, particularly with the fierce competition for scholarships. And people say 'oh boys wouldn't say they're girls just to win'. Umm ...

bellabelly · 07/06/2018 17:35

This makes me so fucking angry. That poor girl and the two who should have got silver and bronze.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 07/06/2018 17:38

Not surprising, when boys are mediocre as boys, but could potentially gain a scholarship by saying they are girls..boys will do that

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 07/06/2018 17:39

Girls may cheat too if it meant they could get a scholarship from it, don't get me wrong, incase that comes across as saying only boys care about themselves.

SardineReturns · 07/06/2018 17:43

Where are the posters who like to come and call us all bitches? I'll be interested to see their take on this.

DustyMaiden · 07/06/2018 17:45

I think boys and girls should compete against each other, if boys always win so be it.

We don't give easy English exams to boys because girls are better at it.

SardineReturns · 07/06/2018 17:48

?

So you want to see the end of all competitive sport for women and girls at all levels.

Ok, I'm interested to know why?

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 07/06/2018 17:49

I think boys and girls should compete against each other, if boys always win so be it.

Very funny. Such a comedian.

Pratchet · 07/06/2018 17:49

Self ID is not law in the US. How is this happening?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 07/06/2018 17:49

Eh? I know plenty of men with English degrees.

SardineReturns · 07/06/2018 17:50

I would also question "boys bad at English", aren't most of the famous authors, jounalists etc in most of history male?

Pratchet · 07/06/2018 17:51

You have maiden in your name so you are definitely female. Definitely.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 07/06/2018 17:51

Self ID is not law in the US.

I thought it was.

OrchidInTheSun · 07/06/2018 17:51

I'm just going to ignore you Dusty because I don't think you belong in the Feminism section

Having a look at the stats again, what's also striking is that Miller and Yearwood are the only names from their respective schools whereas for the rest of the top 20 or so, the same schools come up again and again. Again, I would imagine that there's quite a lot of vested interest there too.

I thought this was interesting from Miller's school's website:
The preamble to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states that:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Surely girls could argue that they're being discriminated against?

daimbars · 07/06/2018 17:53

This is really shit and I feel for the girls who should have won that race.

To put it in proportion, this was was one high school race in America. America is a big place, it has a lot of schools.

It wasn't the olympics, it wasn't an official sporting event, it was a high school race.

Yes those girls deserved better and I hope the school addresses its policy but the level of outrage towards this one unfortunate incident looks to me like grasping at any opportunity to 'prove' how dreadful trans folk are.
