What a day for Irish women

All indications for an overwhelming, resounding YES. The images of people leaving their 'I've Voted' stickers on the wall beside Savita's mural, the footage of people coming #hometovote, the vox pops on the radio of older people telling their stories of why they voted Yes. This isn't just about abortion rights. This is about the Magdalen women, the Tuam babies, the forced adoptions, the cervical cancer scandal... It's about women deserving better. An apology. A vindication. A promise for the future.

I am overwhelmed and so, so proud.

some facts and figures

Around 25 million unsafe abortions were estimated to have taken place worldwide each year, almost all in developing countries (1).
Among these, 8 million were carried out in the least- safe or dangerous conditions.
Over half of all estimated unsafe abortions globally were in Asia.
3 out of 4 abortions that occurred in Africa and Latin America were unsafe.
The risk of dying from an unsafe abortion was the highest in Africa.
Each year between 4.7% – 13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion.

But who cares about any of that eh? If they didn't want to die they should've kept their legs shut.

Awesome Voice Of The Man on this thread demonstrating exactly how callous the decision makers on this and other topics primarily affecting women are. We must do as we are told even if it kills us, and as subhuman vessels, what loss is it really anyway?

Some people are just nasty cunts, I suppose.

Very happy for the women and girls of Ireland, hope that the next steps to actually make abortion available come soon.

SardineReturns · 30/05/2018 16:40

And in Irelands case the Voice Of The Man is a Fucking Hypocrticial one as they didn't stop women who could afford it, coming to the mainland UK for abortion.

Pathetic, truly pathetic.

my colleague was telling me earlier that a group of priests are planning to protest outside abortion clinics. I really hope that protesting outside an abortion clinic is made a criminal offence.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/05/2018 22:36

I'm hoping they wrote an exclusion around clinics in the law from the beginning! It would be easy to do!

SidSparrow
How about wear a condom? There are instances where abortion is necessary, i.e. health of the mother, rape, but most of them are because of irresponsibility. I'm a bit sick of all the rejoicing. What about people who can't have kids? I don't agree with abortion as a late method of contraception. Plenty of women have regretted having an abortion, very few regret having children.

Contraception fails, women have every right to fix that
People are rejoicing over bodily autonomy, not being reduced to a mere vessel

Like it or not, the fertile owe nothing to the infertile, we are not their incubators for hire
Actually studies show most women feel relief after abortion.
Many women also regret having kids but are too scared to talk openly about it as they fear judgement, its not the done thing to say you shouldnt have had kids

Oh look, a man telling a group of women how to manage their bodies and their sexuality. That’s new and unusu...

Oh, wait. Hmm
