What a day for Irish women

All indications for an overwhelming, resounding YES. The images of people leaving their 'I've Voted' stickers on the wall beside Savita's mural, the footage of people coming #hometovote, the vox pops on the radio of older people telling their stories of why they voted Yes. This isn't just about abortion rights. This is about the Magdalen women, the Tuam babies, the forced adoptions, the cervical cancer scandal... It's about women deserving better. An apology. A vindication. A promise for the future.

I am overwhelmed and so, so proud.

I'm so happy that this passed! It stands out as a sign of progress and hope in western societies to me right now in the midst of populist, regressive trends. I'm British but living in the USA and we are fighting tooth and nail right now to protect women's autonomy over our bodies. I'm especially pleased because I know American anti-abortion groups were trying their best to influence the outcome in Ireland, so they can fuck off!!

''Women in crisis pregnancy have been told take the boat... today we tell them: take our hand''

I was never the biggest fan of health minister Simon Harris, but this made me choke up.

So many fabulous tweets on Twitter today, very moving to read. But I especially liked this picture...

What a day for Irish women

Redlemonade - Ireland was a heartless place that didn't look after you or many many women. I do feel there is a major shift taking place now and perhaps Ireland has found its heart.

QuarksandLeptons · 26/05/2018 21:24

Just amazing! Ireland I love you today. For everyone who voted, for everyone who supported, thank you

boatyardblues · 26/05/2018 21:34

I’ve been reading the #hometovote hashtag on Twitter and properly blubbing - so fucking marvellous! A guy who arrived into Dublin and hired a car & tweeted that he had spaces. Someone tweeted back to ask if it mattered which way they were voting & he replied no, he would give a lift either way. There were pro-lifers flying home too on that hashtag. What struck me was the sense that the people of Ireland wanted everyone to have their say. I am really, really happy for my Irish sisters today. 💐

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 26/05/2018 21:40

This is such good news. Thinking of Savita Halappanavar today.

PencilsInSpace · 26/05/2018 21:50

I want to say a special thank you to everyone who campaigned for yes in Donegal. I'm British but in my youth I lived for a few years in north west Donegal and I still feel a strong connection for the place, so the 'no' knocked me back a bit.

It was an incredibly close vote there though, about the same as brexit. Your hard work made the vote that close. And as this was a referendum and not a first past the post election, every single person you convinced to vote 'yes' - their vote counted and added to this landslide.

Thank you and massive well done Flowers

FlaviaAlbia · 26/05/2018 21:56

Such a relief and a beacon of hope for NI.

So much credit is due to the campaigners who've been protesting since the introduction of the 8th and the women who shared their stories.

Destinysdaughter · 26/05/2018 22:14

I was also v touched by all the men on Twitter giving their support to the this, it's heartening to know there are some good men out there who respect and love us.

boatyardblues · 26/05/2018 22:18

Yes, there were some lovely men on Twitter - including one who flew home from Buenos Aires. I was heartened the older men - the Dads and Granddads - saying they were voting yes for the young women in their lives.

CopONNotLinkedIn · 26/05/2018 22:19

Simon Harris has gone up in my estimation massively.

CopONNotLinkedIn · 26/05/2018 22:21

@rainbunny,

No real connections to Ireland, except for my one of my great grandparents coming from there.
But really really pleased with this result, it's been a long time coming but finally it has happened.
Stupid backwards laws will be repealed and women will no longer die as a consequence of hideous draconian laws.
Well done everyone, onwards and upwards!!

CopONNotLinkedIn · 26/05/2018 22:28

It's good news for women!
It's great as well that British women were rooting for us, and now we're going to be rooting for the women of NI

The No campaigners may be revolted by the celebratory feelings today but 1) this is good for women, it's like women are being elevated from being secondary citizens, and 2) abortion rates go down when abortion is legal! so win win.

"Dads and Granddads - saying they were voting yes for the young women in their lives"

They care nothing for the lives that will be ended though do they. Shocking that people are so callous towards the unborn.

CopONNotLinkedIn · 26/05/2018 23:03

@12esmaes, not so, in countries where abortion is legal, rates of abortion go down so you are wrong.

Also, presume you are out there campaigning for the sort of world where women can stare at two lines on a stick and think 'I could cope with this on my own'. Easier to be a keyboard warrior I know. But if you are really motivated to reduce the numbers of abortion you could try and make the world a better place for mothers.

CopONNotLinkedIn · 26/05/2018 23:04

and more shocking that you have so little empathy with women. ''Disgusting''.

Spudlet · 26/05/2018 23:08

12easmaes You and those like you have the blood of Savita Halappanavar, and that of countless other unnamed women, on your hands. And your self-righteousness will never wash it away.

MoltenLasagne · 26/05/2018 23:09

I'm so relieved at the outcome - now we need to ensure the women of NI are shown the same compassion.

Moonkissedlegs · 26/05/2018 23:11

This is about the death of babies in the womb - Those who voted for this have blood on their hands. Disgusting.

You do realise that Irish women were already having abortions... Don't you?!

BeeFarseer · 26/05/2018 23:12

The only callousness I'm seeing here is from you, 12esmaes. Such a shame you can't see the bigger picture.

Congratulations Ireland! I'm second-generation English, with Irish relatives I've also had a termination for medical reasons. This whole thing has been very close to home, and I can't put into words how pleased I am for Irish women.

FermatsTheorem · 26/05/2018 23:12

"12easmaes You and those like you have the blood of Savita Halappanavar, and that of countless other unnamed women, on your hands. And your self-righteousness will never wash it away."

Exactly that, a hundred times over Spudlet. Well said.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 26/05/2018 23:14

Ignoring the pp who thinks it is right for women to die from preventable pregnancy issues.

Waiting for NI and Gibraltar now.
