What a day for Irish women

All indications for an overwhelming, resounding YES. The images of people leaving their 'I've Voted' stickers on the wall beside Savita's mural, the footage of people coming #hometovote, the vox pops on the radio of older people telling their stories of why they voted Yes. This isn't just about abortion rights. This is about the Magdalen women, the Tuam babies, the forced adoptions, the cervical cancer scandal... It's about women deserving better. An apology. A vindication. A promise for the future.

I am overwhelmed and so, so proud.

This is fantastic news. I've just heard on Sky news the new law should be in force by the end of the year. So pleased for Irish women.

I’m so proud of the men and women of Ireland today, my cousins, their children and their children’s children will finally have the choices those that went before didn’t, shackles are off! I hope the same choices can be afforded to those in NI without a referendum.

spontaneousgiventime · 26/05/2018 16:04

I'm not really a soppy person but seeing the pictures from Ireland is making my eyes leak a little bit.

JobHunting4 · 26/05/2018 16:06

I mean, it's the only answer isn't it. It's absurd that it's been illegal for this long, but yet, we couldn't take it for granted.
Ive never even been to Ireland, and I've never needed to look at having an abortion, so why have I cried over this so many times today?
Well done Ireland 🇮🇪

Happy dancing with you!

Time for some music.

ChattyLion · 26/05/2018 16:13

It’s absolutely fantastic. This is hopefully the start of all kinds of positive change for Ireland. They are sending such a positive message to other countries with restrictive abortion laws too. FlowersFlowersFlowers

Thank you to all the English women who care! It's lovely to know that people care.

WhoGetsHeard · 26/05/2018 16:20

The RTE exit poll included the question of why people voted the way they did. The single biggest reason why people voted 'yes' wasn't related to the 'difficult cases' or the fact that repeal is necessary to legislate for exceptional circumstances... It was because people just believe that women should have the right to choose.

People were also asked to name which factors were important to them in making their decision (more than one factor could be chosen).

62% said women's right to choose; 55% said risks to the health or life of a woman; 40% pregnancy as a result of rape or incest; 39% fatal foetal abnormalities; 36% the right to life of the unborn; 24% the right to life of those with Down syndrome or other disabilities; 15% the question of trusting politicians; 12% their religious views; 11% the handling of the cervical cancer controversy.

Amazing scenes at Dubin Castle-could barely hear Miriam O'Callaghan over all the cheering.

I think the final declaration will be soon now.

TheRollingCrone · 26/05/2018 16:23

Fantastic, so happy - March on the North now. The women of Ireland have spoken! ✊

LangCleg · 26/05/2018 16:23

I might be a bit tearful too, here in rural England. Well done, Ireland.

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/05/2018 16:24
