What a day for Irish women

All indications for an overwhelming, resounding YES. The images of people leaving their 'I've Voted' stickers on the wall beside Savita's mural, the footage of people coming #hometovote, the vox pops on the radio of older people telling their stories of why they voted Yes. This isn't just about abortion rights. This is about the Magdalen women, the Tuam babies, the forced adoptions, the cervical cancer scandal... It's about women deserving better. An apology. A vindication. A promise for the future.

I am overwhelmed and so, so proud.

It is amazing how ROI has moved so quickly recently regarding social issues. The voters have obviously had enough of command and control from the Church and fundamental pro life groups.

Well done to all. Freedom of choice is what it was all about.

I remember a few years ago seeing a pic of a counter demo in Dublin where a huge Pro Life march was taking place. One of the pro choice placards said.....

"Get your rosaries off our ovaries!"

I thought it was brilliant, and now it has come to pass.

Although I am reading online that pro life organisations are regrouping immediately to thrash the impending legislation giving the right to terminations. But it seems that the members of the Dail (Parliament) will vote it through, even staunch pro life members of the parliament, having seen the overwhelming support for repeal today.

So happy! (I have been too scared to reply based only on exit polls!) I was a blubbering wreck watching home to vote stuff yesterday, very inspiring.

I hope it also gives gives NI a great push.

MyTeapot · 26/05/2018 19:15

@whitehandledkitchenknife - thank you to your group for looking after Irish women. Brew

I have been reminded watching these scenes of cheering women that we do have power! Sometimes it can feel like women just accept doing all the childcare, earning less, being patronised, ignored, leered at, delete or insert as applicable. But looking at the 'army' of women with their cases coming home to vote made me feel women do have power.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 26/05/2018 19:27

Congratulations Ireland - a great victory. Smile

Vintagebeads · 26/05/2018 19:48

It's a wonderful day.I have been a wreck all day, thankful my ten year old will have rights over her own body.
I hope Savita Halappanavar's family get some peace from today.

RedLemonade · 26/05/2018 19:58

I cried with relief at this result. My DH and I made that trek to Liverpool some years ago to end my pregnancy with a little boy who would have died soon after birth. It was the best decision under heartbreaking circumstances.

I cried because I am so grateful that my two daughters will never have to face that journey should they ever need to make that decision for themselves; no ones daughter will.

Thank you to the people of Ireland and a heartfelt thank you too to all those wonderful, caring, compassionate people in the UK (BPAS, the ASN, even the fecking taxi driver- a true gent who carried my bags into the clinic for me and reassured me I was in good hands) who took care of the women of Ireland through the years our country failed to look after us.

Wine for mná na hÉireann and all those women the world over with battles still to face. Another step forward today.

DarthArts · 26/05/2018 20:05

Wow well done Ireland!

Here's hoping that the next steps go through as well - I think there is a really good chance, given the result here.

So pleased.
