What a day for Irish women

All indications for an overwhelming, resounding YES. The images of people leaving their 'I've Voted' stickers on the wall beside Savita's mural, the footage of people coming #hometovote, the vox pops on the radio of older people telling their stories of why they voted Yes. This isn't just about abortion rights. This is about the Magdalen women, the Tuam babies, the forced adoptions, the cervical cancer scandal... It's about women deserving better. An apology. A vindication. A promise for the future.

I am overwhelmed and so, so proud.

LangCleg I'm rural England too and the eye leak has turned into a snotty tissue. I'm so, so pleased for Irish women, it's fantastic. As PP have said, now NI.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 26/05/2018 16:33

I'm not Irish either by the way.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 26/05/2018 16:34

Pencils, where are you getting those infographics from? I'm impatient for the end result!

C8H10N4O2 · 26/05/2018 16:34

Have any areas voted No?

Donegal was the closest I've seen mentioned but I can't find a final result for that region.

Seeingadistance · 26/05/2018 16:34

Shedding tears here in Scotland. So pleased about this result, and so sad for all the women for whom this came too late.

I hope that interim arrangements can be put in place while the legislation is being put into place. Change must happen now!

whitehandledkitchenknife · 26/05/2018 16:35

Magnificent news.
Back in the early 80s, in London, through our CR group, we ran a (secret) support network for our Irish sisters needing help.
This is what feminism looks like.
Am a little teary watching the results.

Elendon · 26/05/2018 16:36

I agree that interim arrangements must be put in place before the legislation. For all the five women a day who travel abroad.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/05/2018 16:36

I didn't look hard enough, county by county here:

TheChampagneGalop · 26/05/2018 16:38

Fantastic. Finally!

Strugglingtodomybest · 26/05/2018 16:45

Congratulations Ireland, how fantastic!

antimatter · 26/05/2018 16:53

I am so happy for them. This is such big change and encouragement for other countries in Europe (yes, Poland I am looking at you!) to keep going.

PencilsInSpace · 26/05/2018 16:55

I'm getting impatient now. Only a couple of constituencies left to declare. It's so obviously a landslide YES but I want the official announcement.

Elendon · 26/05/2018 16:58

Donegal is more northern than parts of Northern Ireland!

I'm impatient too.

What a wonderful day. So proud to be Irish now. I feel I may return home.

TuppenceInAVase · 26/05/2018 17:07

In tears here seeing the results. I stand with all you women and men who decided that we all have a choice.
For those who struggled with their vote because of their own choices but put them aside enough to remember that your choice may not be somebody else's, I salute you.
Amazing.

spontaneousgiventime · 26/05/2018 17:18

TuppenceInAVase I think that's true. There will be people who voted against their own beliefs for the greater good, they need to be applauded too.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 26/05/2018 17:30

Oh I'm so happy for these results. Thank you Britain for looking after our women and girls in their time of need, hopefully we can return the favor for our NI sisters. And hopefully for not too long.

FermatsTheorem · 26/05/2018 17:33

Hugs of joy and relief to all our Irish sisters. Well done to all of you who campaigned so hard.
