Repeal the 8th - have we talked about Ireland's 'abortion war?'

Nine women A DAY travel to the UK a day to access an abortion. I am vehemently pro-choice and I'm really hoping the law is changed as a result of the referendum in Ireland later this month. Even women who have been raped are not allowed abortions in Ireland!

I haven't seen much discussion of this on here, but perhaps I missed it when I was writing to my MP about changes to the GRC Wink but I found this Standard Issue podcast which explained the issue to me and it is well worth a listen:

Part Two: www.acast.com/standardissuespodcast/simep110doc1part2-repealingthe8th

I'm scared to feel hopeful about the outcome of a referendum though...

Karen Bradley is Sec of State for NI

‘No’ campaign were arguing for free childcare, better support for pregnant women, financial support, ‘baby boxes’...... will they still be campaigning for these things? Surely they are more important than ever now, for no voters fighting for unborn babies. Unless they were just wanting to control women.

In my experience, a lot of pro-lifers are the sort who favour policies that punish the fecklessness of the poor by disadvantaging their children. Ho-hum, does make you wonder...

Sorry, yes it's Karen Bradley. Paste fail on my part.

apologies.

Not here, but I've previously attracted criticism for pointing out that the main ways to reduce numbers of abortions involve:

  • tackling DV and DA
  • properly funding gynae and antenatal care
  • properly funding and promoting contraception
  • reducing poverty
  • destigmatising single parents
  • increasing provision for disabled children, young people and adults

etc etc

The legality or otherwise of termination makes little or no difference to its incidence.

Yes the Government had previously made promises about free contraception, cheaper childcare, much improved sex ed etc and hopefully they'll follow through on all of that too.

Official result is in. Majority in favour of course, more than 1.4 million voted yes!
