Repeal the 8th - have we talked about Ireland's 'abortion war?'

Nine women A DAY travel to the UK a day to access an abortion. I am vehemently pro-choice and I'm really hoping the law is changed as a result of the referendum in Ireland later this month. Even women who have been raped are not allowed abortions in Ireland!

I haven't seen much discussion of this on here, but perhaps I missed it when I was writing to my MP about changes to the GRC Wink but I found this Standard Issue podcast which explained the issue to me and it is well worth a listen:

Part One: www.acast.com/standardissuespodcast/simep109doc1-part1-repealingtheeighth?autoplay

Part Two: www.acast.com/standardissuespodcast/simep110doc1part2-repealingthe8th

I'm scared to feel hopeful about the outcome of a referendum though...

WTAF?!

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 24/05/2018 19:36

Just joining in to say please please please please let the Tá vote win tomorrow. First time I've ever been nervous for a referendum.

Facebook today has shown me numerous Vote No ads, I have reported and blocked them. Also Vote No ads have popped up on two Irish newspaper sites.

TheGirlFromNoWhere · 24/05/2018 19:38

Sickening. Just shows the extent of the funding they have. I've reported my own post

TheGirlFromNoWhere · 24/05/2018 19:40

Eight I've actually seen Together for Yes ads today on the indo website which was great. Up till then was only loveboats ones.

ChattyLion · 24/05/2018 19:45

Keeping absolutely everything crossed here.

Diff16 · 24/05/2018 19:46

I am an Irish expat living abroad. I have heard so many sad cases of mothers with cancer who are pregnant but are denied treatment , fetal abnormalities, rape, etc, etc. I love my country, but it needs to come out of the dark ages. I am someone who went to a convent school in the 80s, with a girl in my class who died when pregnant- don't tell me that the Catholic Church cares... they don't! Her name was ANN LOVETT, google it.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 24/05/2018 19:47

That's good to hear TheGirlFromNoWhere. I was avoiding logging on to the Irish Indo today just to avoid the ads. Yes it does show the no sides funding.

Don't know if this has already been posted:
Six ways Ireland’s abortion referendum could be hacked this week

It's heartwarming the number of people journeying back to Ireland just to vote. Another here hoping for a big 'yes'.

I've just been watching #HometoVote on Instagram and it is so heartwarming to see all the people returning to Dublin airport to vote and the people waiting to welcome them home.

I'm an emotional wreck Smile

RivkaMumsnet · 24/05/2018 20:31

Thanks for the screenshot TheGirlFromNoWhere.

We're working on blocking that ad now.

TheGirlFromNoWhere · 24/05/2018 20:46

Me too Eight. Emotional times. Hoping against hope for a yes outcome, it's by no means certain. My sister lives in a more rural part of the country and was on a Yes stall earlier on, she was called a "fucking murderer" (by a man) today.
But I've also seen my friend post something on fb saying why she will be voting Yes which was unthinkable a few months ago.
So. Hope Smile

TheGirlFromNoWhere · 24/05/2018 20:47

Thanks @RivkaMumsnet

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/05/2018 21:00

That ad though.
Repeal the 8th.
But if you are responsible for a living baby who wears hats, definitely allow her to grow to adulthood. And maybe don't legislate to remove her bodily autonomy, so she can live the life of a happy woman with rights.

TheGirlFromNoWhere

Thanks so much for the screenshot, I have blocked the URL - www.protectthe8th.ie/
This should block that ad but If by any chance you do see it again can you please click on it (I know you will not want to but we need that information to be 100% sure) and send me the www address that comes up, please. Some of the advertisers will try to bypass the rules we have on our account in order to push their message, we have 1000's of advertisers live at any one time so trying to find one ad is a needle in a haystack situation, especially if they are categorizing themselves as something they are not.

Thanks

Iflyaway · 24/05/2018 21:52

Diff. I was on my knees reading about Ann Lovett. Cried my eyes out.

Grew up in Ireland, been away a long time now, I just pray the YES vote wins tomorrow.

Fabricwitch · 25/05/2018 01:06

I always grew up thinking that Ireland had equal rights for men and women. I didn't really understand what feminists were still fighting for. I slowly started realising that things around me weren't quite right, infact they weren't equal at all. I now realise that I'd been completely misguided by a misogynistic society.
When the vote was first announced, I thought thank goodness the people can finally get what they want. Then I realised a rake of people don't want women to have control over their own bodies, equal rights as men, basic human rights.
I hope it's a yes tomorrow. But I have learned something from this, that I am passionate about feminism and want to get involved in a movement to help future generations of women and girls.

Maryz · 25/05/2018 01:43

I know at least a dozen youngsters who are flying home specifically to vote as well as many more who are going home from all over the country.

I'm still not convinced it will be enough.

I was 21 in 1983, exactly the age dd is now and I was just as vehemently pro-choice as she is today. I find it hard to believe that I'm 55 now and we have not moved on. I dread to think that if this doesn't succeed dd might be 55 and I might be 80 before we get another chance.

TheVeryThing · 25/05/2018 06:58

Happy referendum day! I am full of nervous energy, it’s going to be a very tense 36 hours.

Cwenthryth · 25/05/2018 07:26

Heartening pictures on Twitter of Irish voters heading home to vote yes. C’mon Ireland. You can do it.

@TheVeryThing well done and Thankyou for all your efforts on the front line. You will have made a difference, you will have changed minds and galvanised people to vote.

Fingers crossed!

@AngieMumsnet @RivkaMumsnet we appreciate that MN didn’t solicit that ad and Thankyou for your attempts to zap it ASAP..... is there a way to quantify how much MN profited from the ad being hosted on the site so you are able to donate your income from it to a more suitable cause?

Luxembourgmama · 25/05/2018 07:54

Finally today is the day. I'm disenfranchised as I live abroad. I'm so so nervous that it won't pass.

QuarksandLeptons · 25/05/2018 08:46

Flowers to all the Mná na hÉireann today

R0wantrees · 25/05/2018 09:24

Truly moved reading the #hometovote tweets and stories of people travelling to Ireland in the hope that women in crisis in the future won't have to.
