Maybe Romario's intention was to explore that question of whether a trans person is always trans. Turns out, probably yes.

Pratchet · 07/05/2018 23:19

Does anyone else have moments of sudden simultaneous insight and bafflement that people just go round pretending to be the opposite sex. It's just so bizarre.

2rebecca · 07/05/2018 23:28

Agree that if Romario didn't want people to know he was a trans man then he shouldn't have gone on this programme. I wonder if the producers wanted one of them to keep quiet. They all seem very trivial. The XXY lass seems the pleasantest. The 2 XXY folk I met in real life looked very male but had been diagnosed young and put on testosterone.
Perhaps the quieter ones have more too them. I think Saffron needs to stop pushing the being non binary as her main issue and personality feature and realise everyone has a range of personality features and that's normal. Turning it in to her "thing" because she feels less pretty than her sister isn't a good move.
The 2 m to f transsexuals overdo the girlie femininity thing

Destinysdaughter · 07/05/2018 23:29

I didn't watch this tongue gut, but from the comments it sounded interesting. Worth watching on catchup?

Italiangreyhound · 07/05/2018 23:30

@DJLippy well I have eyes but I don't see it like that at all. I think Romario was in the wrong and Marcus was right.

cistersofterfy · 07/05/2018 23:30

I enjoyed it so I would say yes.

Italiangreyhound · 07/05/2018 23:34

@Destinysdaughter what's 'tongue gut'? Tonight?

"Worth watching on catchup?"

Yes, it was interesting, there were some very interesting people in there and definitely worth watching.

2rebecca · 07/05/2018 23:40

I think it was correct to let Philomena know but not on his birthday and not like that. Everyone else knowing and talking behind their backs was bitchy. Why do folk in these houses get sexual so quickly?

Destinysdaughter · 07/05/2018 23:42

Oh dear, yes I meant tonight! What a weird autocorrect 😀

SupermatchGame · 07/05/2018 23:51

I thought that was really good. Lovely people and all so comfortable with each other. Romario seems to be the only one carrying a bit of baggage/ anguish. Is he the oldest? Don't know if that's got anything to do with it..

Nextloorejext · 07/05/2018 23:59

That was quite interesting and not over sensationalised, none of them were awful or unlikeable - channel 4 is slipping. I don’t understand why everyone is tutting at a Marcus saying he “outed” Romario. Everyone knew and was gossiping about it - apart from Filomena. The “girls” outrd R by spreading what they saw. Anyway, it was fsirly sensitively done. Poor Saffy looks nothing like a boy - seems pretty confused.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 08/05/2018 00:04

I was initially pleased that they all seemed reasonable and genuine.

After a bit more thought it struck me that this will be a lot of people's first introduction to trans people.

With no background knowledge of TRA methods or the existence of AGPs, won't most viewers lump all trans people into the harmless, young, maybe experimenting or rebelling, possibly a bit confused bracket?

So won't grasp the finer points of objections to self id.

AngryAttackKittens · 08/05/2018 00:13

Why do folk in these houses get sexual so quickly?

I assume they must screen for this when interviewing potential participants? Not that I didn't indulge in my share of shenanigans at that age, but the willingness to do so on camera on a show your gran could watch does boggle me a bit.

serfandterf101 · 08/05/2018 00:20

I think we have a lot to learn from this generation who are mostly very comfortable with not being stereotypically "normal" (I'm speaking as an old gimmer here Grin) Yes previous generations have paved the way with women's lib, gay rights, etc but they have really embraced the right to live as they feel happiest and I am full of admiration. As a PP said, there's none of the TRA about any of them and Id bet that they would all be horrified at the kind of violent misogynistic twats who are purporting to speak for them.

Having said that, Saffron is a bit too "non binary", it's like that's all there is to her, it has consumed her personality. So sad that she can't just be "her" and not feel like she is competing with her sister (who probably thinks she's great as she is). I'm optimistically hoping that she'll have a bit of a thing with another housemate and decide she's gay/straight and maybe feel a bit more secure? But it probably isn't that easy...?!

I actually really like Campbell, it just demonstrate that the earlier you start the hormones the more likely you are to pass successfully. She is also way less annoyingly 'girly' than Charlie. Is that because of her early transition too? She and the curly blonde make a very cute well-matched couple.

Re Romero- I reckon it was a production ploy to have a secretive trans man in there. After all, he passes totally, except when naked. Interesting to gauge the others reactions - some of them obviously quite pissed off that he fooled them all and therefore is he a 'better' trans than them? Competitive behaviour not restricted to 'cat-fighting girls' and 'macho men', it's also perhaps prevalent in the trans community.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

Yes, I think so.

I think the getting interested in each other sexually is a TV thing, that is what the TV producers are hoping for, I think.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 08/05/2018 00:30

I'd guess it's seen as similar to YouTube but better as no-one has to go looking for it, they just get it vomited into their laps by clicking on a mainstream TV channel.

A lot of boggling going on round here Grin

Italiangreyhound · 08/05/2018 00:36

@serfandterf101 I didn't think Romario passed totally. I do wonder how much the participants were told about the other housemates, maybe they did not know what the whole house situation would be.

"some of them obviously quite pissed off that he fooled them all and therefore is he a 'better' trans than them?"

I don't think they are pissed off because he passes more than them, I think they are pissed off because he is being secretive and they are being very upfront. The irony is that, IMHO, that feeling of someone not being open with them might be he same feeling others may have had about them, and they would not like that.

So I do feel sorry for Romario, but if he didn't want to get into that situation he should not have come on to Filomena.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 08/05/2018 00:44

Italiangreyhound

I think you're right and it's a shame, it gives the impression they're all just there for sex.

Would be more interesting and indicate more depth if they didn't get jiggy.

serfandterf101 · 08/05/2018 00:44

Do you think Romero was testing whether or not he could attract a straight 'normal' woman? Not in a creepy predatory way but in a attempt to validate his transness as it were? Because he hasn't been as open as the others, we don't know his history or background so maybe this is all very new to him and he's experimenting?

serfandterf101 · 08/05/2018 00:46

I think some of the sex thing is because they've seen how it pulls viewers in for Big Brother so the producers have orchestrated the house mate mix very carefully and cynically

Italiangreyhound · 08/05/2018 00:55

I think @AngryAttackKittens is right "I assume they must screen for this when interviewing potential participants?" They probably wanted the most diverse bunch, but maybe they also wanted to allow for the chance for people to hook up because that seems to be channel four's thing! But I think their personal stories are more interesting than them on a night out etc. Taking a bath together, how many women do that? Or am I just very old!

@serfandterf101 yes, I think maybe it was a way for him to be himself and not feel the need to speak about his 'transness'. But to do it on camera on a TV programmer was really very cruel in my opinion, to the other person.

busyboysmum · 08/05/2018 01:01

Just watched on catchup and it was interesting.

It shows how important it is to be honest really. If you are trans that is never going to go away no matter how much you may want it to.

But if you are honest and open about it that gives people the option. Otherwise it feels like lying. When was Romario going to fess up?

ToeToToe · 08/05/2018 02:10

I found it surprisingly engaging. There are a lot of narcissistic people here - but, hey it's like the big brother house, so...to be expected.

Things that struck me were : Saffron - clearly, obviously, female. I felt so sad for her that their identity was tangled up with their 'pretty' sister (not even sure their sister is so much prettier than them tbh, just done up more femininely) I found myself torn between wanting to give them a hug, and wanting to say "binders!? wtf?) I went to Uni in the late 80's/early 90s, have you any idea how many androgynous women I knew? Lots doing geology/sciency stuff - All happy, all definitely female. She/they seemed so confident on BBC Breakfast - but so different in the house, where you hear her story.

(I have just been through and changed all the pronouns for Saffron - (any left are a mistake) and it seems like madness. Saffron - there is nothing wrong with being a 'her'! You can still be exactly the person you are, wear anything, present any way you like - and be a 'her').

Italiangreyhound · 08/05/2018 02:17

@ToeToToe you are so right. I also like Saffron and found Saffron to be lovely and engaging. Why have all the bother of being 'non-binary' and the binder. Just be Saffron and like blokes or like women and be bi or gay or straight. Saffron may not feel 'like a woman' some days but heck I never really feel 'like a woman', I am just me and I think loads of females are like that too.

The irony was that although they are all under the big 'trans umbrella' they were all very unique and their own people.

ToeToToe · 08/05/2018 02:19

I found Brooke very interesting as well - understanding what she meant "I sort of transitioned naturally" - she looks so feminine, said she has no difficulty 'passing' - and yet has a penis. And the problems she spoke about, that arise when dating. "when do I tell them?" I liked her a lot.
