come on Tinycitrus, I would suggest that having Munroe Bergdorf front a show called what makes a woman was a deliberately goady act by C4 to gain viewers.

I'll probably watch that one because as Leyat says, I'll be interested to see how they spin the Bristol thing.

Greymisty · 06/05/2018 23:59

Saw the trailer and I don't think it will gel well with me and it'll be cringe. Hoping to read threads from those who have watched it though so I'm up to date with tv minus the effort Grin

YY. I fear for my blood pressure though.

terryleather · 07/05/2018 00:08

It's amusing me that on this thread the most frothy frothers are those accusing others of being bovvered and frothing...but then I'm quite tipsy now so it's all GrinGrinGrin

ReluctantCamper · 07/05/2018 00:24

yes. today I have been accused of

  • hysteria
  • likened to a criminal
  • told that i'm seeking to enforce the purity of womanhood (i'm watching you all like a snake so you better behave)
  • repeatedly told I'm a bigot

I never say things like that to people. I'm getting a bit tired of being some right on fuckwit's punch bag to be honest.

the frothing has seemed mostly to some from one side of the debate today.

Amen sister!

It really is fucking tiresome being scolded innit...

leyat · 07/05/2018 00:37

I'll give that a second Amen! :D

TrumpTrump · 07/05/2018 00:40

When is Munroe's documentary on? Is she the director, or just the host?

Oh, Bergdorf is part of it?

I thought it was just a Blue Hair Big Brother.

Shan't be watching either way!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 09:02

3 of the (I was going to say contestants as they kept referring to having been 'in the house') participants have just been on BBC Breakfast.

2 people recounting how nice a man had been as he listened and learned and made lots of misgendering mistakes "So you don't have to!"

DH looked at me and said "I know. They can be whatever gender they choose to be as long as they don't claim to have changed chromosomes. He will never be female, as you are, yet, if and only if, he is polite about it, you will call him by whatever name and pronoun he desires. His choice"

I think I may have been a little bit more vocal about this than I thought! But I may have to rethink that last bit... my socialisation still shows!

Women are socialised to be 'nice

Plenty of people are socialised to be nice. It's not just a female thing.

The man on BBC Breakfast was trying to be nice. He really didn't want to upset the other people.

There are plenty of people out there who aren't nice - both men and women.

Are we ready for this?? I'm already angry

I can see you're open minded then...

OrchidInTheSun · 07/05/2018 09:33

Isn't it a bit early on a BH for you to be mansplaining female socialisation Yet?

I shan't be watching. I have better things to do with my evening :)

yetanothertranswoman · 07/05/2018 09:36

Isn't it a bit early on a BH for you to be mansplaining female socialisation Yet

I seem to know many females who must have failed that socialisation then.
And plenty of males who failed male socialisation.

yetanothertranswoman · 07/05/2018 09:37

But kudos on getting 'mansplaining in'.

Obviously you failed female socialisation as well.

LangCleg · 07/05/2018 09:39

I failed female socialisation but I'm not pretending it doesn't exist as a patriarchal societal force.

It's called having a class analysis.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 09:39

The man on BBC Breakfast was trying to be nice. He really didn't want to upset the other people. Yes. And the other 2 talked about him as if he were a child, or somehow not a fully functioning adult!

Their repeated assertions that he needed to learn what they wanted him to do and that it was OK for him to make misgendering mistakes as long as he didn't meant to, started to irritate me. They were truly patronising, the whole section was. I dislike being patronised by men, I see no reason why women need to use the same belittling tactic to make any point.

I was trying to work out what I would say to them. "Sorry to disappoint but I don't go gender. You're a bloke and you're a green/blue haired young woman with a heightened sense of entitlement"

RoderickRules · 07/05/2018 09:42

Curious Grin

Except the woman on there had a rare chromosomal disorder - so wasn't she possibly intersex?

That would have been an interesting conversation though. I wonder if that discussion happened in the house?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/05/2018 09:50

I don't think I'll watch much of this season, but here are the details if anyone else wants to. All on Channel 4.

Genderquake - Episode 1 Monday 7th May, Episode 2 Tuesday, May 8, both at 9pm.

In 21st century Britain, what it means to be a man or a woman is changing. Eleven strangers of different gender identities and sexualities spend a week together - with explosive results.

Munroe Bergdorf's documentary What Makes A Woman? goes out on Wednesday, May 16 at 10pm. I might watch that.

Other programmes in this season: Genderquake: The Debate, feminist prank show Riot Girls, Random Acts: The Lady That Dances.

Terfragette69 · 07/05/2018 09:53

I also failed at female socialisation, which is why I'm sometimes considered a bitch..
🤔 Or a trouble maker...... But hey hi, its hard not being a hand maiden. Whenever I have met gender benders in real life, they have largely been self absorbed, entitled snowflakes. I don't imagine those choosing to appear on the show will be any different. ANYONE, who is me me me in society generally, gets right on my nerves!

I wonder if there is anyone with your views on the show - just to add a little spice?

SarahCarer · 07/05/2018 10:05

Some people of both sexes are resistant or immune to the forces of socialisation yetanother but there is a wealth of research showing the differences between female and male socialisation and the exceptions don't disprove the rule.
Terfragette I so dislike the word "genderbenders" Shouldn't all GC feminists be challenging and questioning (ie Bending) gender? The trans celebs cannot be expected to be any less vacuous, self obsessed and nauseating than all the other celebs.

ToeToToe · 07/05/2018 10:06

Thanks Gasp. I will be watching all of these - I strongly suspect they will be against my viewpoint, but I'd like to see what "mainstream right on C4" makes of it.

Btw - Love the I failed at female socialisation Grin

I failed at female socialisation because I don't always say yes to men's demands. A central tenet of feminism is women's right to say NO.
