As an opinion piece it does well and they've certainly got a lot of evidence to the transphobia.

I find the hypocrisy the most frustrating - the double standards here.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2018 13:32

I suspect that this is all going to get a LOT more angry and mean spirited yet.
Be prepared for it.
There is deliberate trolling going on, on twitter and attempts (on both sides I might add) to wind the other side up.

Its not helping the situation.

I know everyone is really wound up. But honestly, you need to take a deep breathe, step back and focus on what you are trying to do, rather than get drawn into slanging matches.

Xenia · 30/04/2018 13:40

The article is inaccurate. MN has lots of different views on it on lots of topics. Also we are all free to debate any issue we like and if some trans people don't like that that's just tough. They can write about that if they want. I support their right to do so. However we continue to have a right to write about disagreeing about what they write.

If a lot of women are concerned about the impact of something like including transwomen in statistics about crime or violence or women's pay then I am not surprised and self declaring is ridiculous. it's like the emperor's new clothes - we can surely call that out if we want to. I have never been against trans people. I support the right of people to transition and I know how many of them suffer badly. I don't think most posters on MN are at all unkind to those with those issues but that does not mean we should not discuss legal and practical issues of what is a very important topic.

The fact this is one of the few places men don't drown us out is a good thing and quite rare actually.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 13:46

Out of interest is it at all possible to put forward the concerns many people here have about the rights & safety of women and children without being "transphobic

Any Pratchett fans remember the god Nuggan from Monstrous Regiment? The one whose holy book had an appendix so it could be added to?

It's like that with TRAs and "transphobia". Already transphobic are - pink hats with ears, cupcakes with vulvas drawn on in icing, anything to do with vaginas really, the term FGM, lesbians not wanting to touch a penis, and admitting that some men get a sexual thrill out of wearing women's knickers.

I'm sure they'll get to abominating, I mean transphobinating, cats, babies, and the color blue eventually, given time.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 30/04/2018 13:48

That article is literal violence to anyone who continued reading after their GCSEs.

Also
“if your feminism doesn’t include trans women, it’s not feminism at all.“ Nope.
If your feminism doesn’t centre people with vaginas then it’s not feminism at all.
Women are not responsible for the entire globe.

Ereshkigal · 30/04/2018 13:48

I know everyone is really wound up. But honestly, you need to take a deep breathe, step back and focus on what you are trying to do, rather than get drawn into slanging matches.

Yes you're right.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 13:49

How about "if your feminism is about making poncy declarative statements about what your feminism is, you're a bit of a wanker"?

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 30/04/2018 13:52

Cheers AAK Wink

OrchidInTheSun · 30/04/2018 13:56

I guess the career isn't going so well. I wonder how Emma's getting on?

It does strike me that it's not the smartest move to slag off a former employer if you're hoping for employment.

I hire writers but I wouldn't hire her now.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 13:57

"Feminism is about women" is one of those things that you'd think was so obvious it didn't need to be said, but postmodernism is a hell of a drug.

Xenia · 30/04/2018 13:58

It's one reason I've always avoided committees (including business ones) where I can and feminism discussions as you can be so non productive just talking about your rules for the meeting or go round in circles with arguments. The bottom line is we have a long way to go to get women equal pay and fair treatment. Most of us are kind to people born in the wrong body and polite to most people and trans issues affect many many fewer people than women's issues so in my view are fairly de minimis. Self declaration is ludicrous however.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 13:58

I wouldn't hire this one even if she had the world's best references. Did you read the article? There's only so much an editor can do.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 30/04/2018 13:59

It does strike me that it's not the smartest move to slag off a former employer if you're hoping for employment.

Indeed, this is not a person I would hire to work for me. Even if we agreed on the topic, I still would not offer her employment and I know very few people in a position to hire who would either after reading that article.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 30/04/2018 14:10

"It does strike me that it's not the smartest move to slag off a former employer if you're hoping for employment."

Agreed, but mainly I wouldn't hire her because she can't write.

Where do you go from there, in terms of building a writing career? 5 things about my Sociology lecturer that are offensive to dogs with floppy ears? Don't Hire Me, I'll Just Use You For Material Next Time I Can't Find A Job?

ArcheryAnnie · 30/04/2018 14:18

There's a bit of me that feels rather sorry for these young women busy burning their bridges in public on behalf of a group of trans activists that will discard them as soon as they step out of line. (And these same trans activists can go back to their former lives, with all the privilege that entails, whenever they want to.)

But: they are adults, and they are free to make their own choices, as indeed they have done.

Weebo · 30/04/2018 14:20

AngryKittens God Nuggan is so bloody spot on. :o

Abomination 14 a - Any book, pamphlet, periodical or newspaper that is not directly inspired by the word of Nuggan

Although my personal favorite is abomination 6668.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 14:21

Yeah, if I knew them IRL I'd probably be sending them "ffs please stop if you ever want to be gainfully employed again" texts right now.

TerfsUp · 30/04/2018 14:22

Poorly researched and written article. I do hope that if Hannah earns her living as a journalist she does a better job in her paid work.

TerfsUp · 30/04/2018 14:24

Also. Anytime a headline is a question the answer is always "no". Otherwise, the header would be written as a statement.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/04/2018 14:24

I don’t understand what rights trans people are supposed not to have ? As mainly white , heterosexual males, what can’t they do ? It isn’t that they want to bring their rights up to the level of everyone else (as was the case with gay and lesbian marriage etc) it is that they want to take our rights as women from us. This “trans rights” stuff is so disingenuous.

OrchidInTheSun · 30/04/2018 14:26

Well they are adults @Archery but they're young and foolish and think they are seeing things through a unique prism us old farts don't comprehend. I was like that too at that age but thankfully I didn't feel the need to broadcast it to the whole world.

But no, I wouldn't hire her for her writing skills either.

LaSqrrl · 30/04/2018 14:28

if your feminism does not centre on mens sexual rights, IS IT EVEN FEMINISM??

bwahahahahahah

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 14:29

Especially the bit about babies, Weebo.

"Do people still make them?"

"Yes, but they feel bad about it."

And we're back to vaginas being transphobic again.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/04/2018 14:30

"Intersectional" means "intersects with penis", right? That's what my Gender Studies professor told me.
