thinly veiled men's rights activism

Oh yes, let's be very clear. This is misogyny pure and simple.

It's just made me buy a ticket for the Oxford Women's Place meeting. I'll have to take the afternoon off work and I wasn't really up for a scrap with half a dozen masked social justice warriors.

But do you know what? They can fuck off with their bully boy tactics.

merrymouse · 21/04/2018 22:47

So strange to have see the video of the meeting (civilised academics talking about politics and gender theory) and then to see what they had to to get through to attend the meeting.

Abouttoblow · 21/04/2018 22:48

Could someone tweet the video to India and ask for her thoughts?

HermionesRightHook · 21/04/2018 22:48

Zibidoo we're talking about an event that was considering the impact of the rights of trans people on people who were born women. It is appropriate to use cis- and trans- as helpful extra words to try to make points clearly. I was making the point that women who were born in the bodies that match their gender have some very serious concerns about upcoming transpeople rights legislation. But that's a very long winded way of putting it when there's a perfectly good modifier already available in cis.

I may not have been clear - I do actually agree with the majority of women on Mumsnet who feel that the upcoming legislation (and other issues) needs modifying to protect women, who are ourselves also a marginalised group. I have reached peak trans, but I'm not throwing the majority of non-TRA trans people under the bus while I do it.

ReluctantCamper · 21/04/2018 22:49

Is there any woman capable of independent thought who isn't blocked by India?

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 21/04/2018 22:49

I dont have a gender but i still have concerns

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 21/04/2018 22:51

is appropriate to use cis- and trans- as helpful extra words to try to make points clearly.

Really? Do you have trouble understanding what the word “woman” means?

ReluctantCamper · 21/04/2018 22:51

women who were born in the bodies that match their gender

I wasn't. I bloody hate the female gender. It's the worst one. I want the one where everyone else does my emotional labour and shit work and I get paid more.

Having watched that video I'd really like to tell you what you can do with 'cis', but talk guidelines prevent it.

Suffice it to say that the 'cis' would need a wash afterwards.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/04/2018 22:53

@HermionesRightHook 'Cis' isn't needed. 'Trans' means someone who is trying to identify out of their biological sex. 'Cis' is misleading because it implies men can be women if they identify as such. In fact a woman who identifies as a man is still female, and a man who identifies as a woman is still male.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 21/04/2018 22:53

What a fucking fantastic post reluctantcamper!!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/04/2018 22:55

I hate to be the thread police, but there seems to be a bit of a derail going on, and we should all be mindful of not inadvertently posting things that can be screenshot and cropped to remove context, and then used to prove how transphobic we all are...

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 21/04/2018 22:55

I acknowledge my femaleness without identifying with the subordinate status it confers on me. I dislike it when people use labels that conflate these defining elements of my identity

HermionesRightHook · 21/04/2018 22:55

I don't, Zibidoo. But I don't have a problem with the mutability of the English language and how useful it is to have a language that can co-opt short cuts from other languages when discussing complicated issues.

Getting back to my original point, whatever one thinks on this issue, the behaviour of those awful little babies on the stairs is appalling and I am shocked that the police didn't intervene.

MsMcWoodle · 21/04/2018 22:55

sorry hermione - I don't accept 'cis' under any circumstances. Glad you have peak transed though.

Good point itsall

I will ignore attempts to derail for an alternative agenda. Thanks.

ReluctantCamper · 21/04/2018 22:56

Yes, I think we can all agree on that HermionesRightHook

MsMcWoodle · 21/04/2018 22:57

Right yes - back to the thread. What can we do about this sort of behavior and how can we make sure that future meetings aren't stopped?

thebewilderness · 21/04/2018 22:57

Women are discussing the effect of laws on women's rights.
Reframing it to center transgender in women's rights discussions is inappropriate and I respectfully suggest that you knock it off.

Elletorro · 21/04/2018 22:58

Exactly right Reluctantcamper not only is the female gender the worst the biology isn’t a walk in the park either.

I refuse my gender and I’d love to escape my biology. But I cannot so I’m a feminist making the best of a bad deal.

Wanderabout · 21/04/2018 22:58

Please stop calling these adult males misguided youth. They openly advocate killing women who refuse to submit.

This is true, isn't it? It's happening in plain sight, for anyone to see. Organisations claiming to be against domestic violence are openly saying it's OK to hit women. If that woman points out the difference between transwomen (even with penises) and women.

So you could be a man who hates women and says he is a woman. You need have no surgery if you don't want to. You then get to advocate violence against women who question it. And are lauded for doing so by many.

Because transwomen are women. And any man who says he is a woman is s woman. And if you don't agree you are on the wrong side of history.

Why wouldn't an MRA or generally unpleasant woman-hating man do this?

Trumpdump · 21/04/2018 22:59

Anyone know which group they were from? Anti Facebook? Sisters Uncut?

I'm wondering if the Daily Mail would be interested in this? They like a fight, especially if there's a video!

Trumpdump · 21/04/2018 23:00

Antifa, not 'anti Facebook'!

thebewilderness · 21/04/2018 23:00

Misters Uncut took credit on twitter for these terrorist actions at Bristol.

LangCleg · 21/04/2018 23:01

It's just made me buy a ticket for the Oxford Women's Place meeting.

Good for you!

Let's have dozens more meetings and let the fools show themselves up many times more.

Elletorro · 21/04/2018 23:01

Future meetings will need to liaise with the police in advance and ensure that organisers are allowed access and egress

Fire escape routes should be kept clear.

Bottle neck areas should be identified in advance and be kept clear.

I see a health and safety risk here.
