Justine stands up for FWR in The Times

SwearyG · 15/04/2018 00:21

Justine is quoted in The Times today saying that TRAs are pressuring advertisers to withdraw from the site but they’re willing to take the hit to keep the discussion open. It’s very heartening after the threads of the last few days re FWR being hidden and the worries about this space being censored.

Flowers to @JustineMumsnet - thank you.

yetanothertranswoman

What would supporting trans activists look like?
Refusing to allow discussion.
Refusing to recognise women's concerns.
Refusing to respect women's boundaries.
Using 'cis' or 'terf'.
Remaining silent or supporting violence against women by males who identify as trans.
Campaigning for women to be fired or excluded for raising concerns.
Campaigning for changes to legislation that will negatively impact women.
Telling girls they are boys if they are unfeminine in some way, and vice versa.
Telling lesbians they are transphobic if they aren't interested in sex with males.
Giving business or votes to orgs that support Mermaids etc.

I could go on?

TerfsUp · 15/04/2018 18:31

Thank you, Justine and MNHQ. Flowers

Hypermice · 15/04/2018 18:52

Well fuck me if there isn’t an upside to the emotional load of running a household after all... Grin because we hold the purse strings, we buy the washing powder (and Book the holidays and sort out the car insurance and do the food shop and everything else.)

I’d be intrigued to know what pence in the pound is under women’s control on the high street. I’ve seen it mentioned at 70-80%.

Advertisers would be very foolish indeed to pull over this issue. The spending power of the women of MN is significant

Sarahconnor1 · 15/04/2018 18:55

I was a very gender non conforming child my mum was initially Confused as she is the most maternal motherly person but ultimately she knew that I was who I was. I grew up to be a perfectly normal adult woman but I worry if I had been born 20 years later I would have been a target for trans.

But I'm not trans and I am sure as hell I can't identify out of all the shit that comes with being a biological women.

TeiTetua · 15/04/2018 19:01

Understood that threads about threads are bad form, but in the "Am I Being Unreasonable" section of Mumsnet, there's a thread titled "AIBU to be extremely proud of Justine Roberts & Mumsnet right now?" and it has over 600 postings, mostly favourable (life's to short to read them all). But leaving aside what people are saying there, this is all being said by women (and maybe a few men) who are seeing the topic on a general discussion forum, not one oriented towards feminism like this one. It really seems that when women have a chance to speak out about the trans issue, they've got a pretty negative opinion about it. People who'd be very hard to dismiss as "Trans Excluding Radical Feminists" when many of them wouldn't define themselves as feminists at all!

Thank you so much Justine and everyone at MNHQ.

I loved this comment on the Times article:

15 blue-haired weirdos threaten to boycott companies that advertise to millions of mostly middle-class mothers of young children via Mumsnet. Boden and Ella’s Kitchen must be crapping themselves.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 20:42

LOL notCis

EasterRobin · 15/04/2018 20:50

@CircleSquareCircleSquare top idea! We really do have a lot of spending power as a group.

EasterRobin · 15/04/2018 20:54

Hurrah for Justine and the lovely Mumsnet team!!!! WineWineWineWineWineWineWineWineWineWineBrew(the last one is teetotal in case any of you are pregnant/breastfeeding)

AnotherQuoll · 15/04/2018 21:46

Thank you Justine, Mumsnet, Andrew Gilligan, Janice Turner, and The Times. My AdBocker's now de-activated for both sites.

SecretsRSecrets · 15/04/2018 22:12

Just realized as I finished pg 1 that there are 9 pgs. Although I am being unMNy, I am posting before I finish RTFT, so that it's not a couple hours (plus distractions) before I add my many thanks to Justine and all of MNHQ.

You are all fabulous!!Flowers and Wine and/or Gin, whichever you may fancy. Justine, you are incredibly brave and one brilliant woman. MoreFlowersWineCake

AngryAttackKittens · 15/04/2018 22:36

Great job, Justine! I'm so happy to see this.

Also, think about which companies advertise on Mumsnet. How many TRAs regularly purchase from those companies? Now, how many mums do? There are more potential buyers on Mumnset alone than there are trans people total in the UK, and that's before you exclude the reasonable trans people who'd ignore any attempt at a boycott.

We have the numerical advantage and it's about time that was recognized.

whoputthecatout · 15/04/2018 22:43

Been away and only just caught up with how life has moved on.

Bravo Justine and Mumsnet HQ. And many thanks.

TAs have bitten off more than they can chew this time.

SmurfOrTerff · 15/04/2018 23:00

whoputthecatout I have just spent a week away and its like I've missed months.
Loved having no internet, but glad I'm back.

Spending power ! ha ha ha

miri1985 · 15/04/2018 23:03

Was curious what the general online reaction to this has been so looked up mumsnet on twitter. Certain people are absolutely vilifying the site for any of the very few comments that they deem to be "*phobic" apparently thats what mumsnet is all about and decrying the lack of moderation etc. threatening advertisers

None of them seem to see the irony of using twitter to post these revelations which has actual hate, no moderation etc. Haven't seen any of them threaten twitters advertisers or propose a boycott of the platform etc

A few weeks ago we were nothing but bored, uneducated Mums who needed to be told our place and now suddenly we must be stopped through any means

R0wantrees · 15/04/2018 23:19

Interestingly, some of the accounts that were calling for boycotts a few days ago are now suggesting its outrageous that that Justine has suggested there is any boycotting campaign! But stories move very quickly over a couple of days in some corners of twitterland...

Mner · 15/04/2018 23:20

Absolutely brilliant news Grin thank you

AngryAttackKittens · 15/04/2018 23:24

Clearly truth is subjective and changeable, or some pomo shit like that.

R0wantrees · 15/04/2018 23:32

my Grandma used to say, 'why spoil a good story with the truth?'

R0wantrees · 15/04/2018 23:35

miri1985 , the replies under the recent Times articles are worth reading.

rowdywoman1 · 15/04/2018 23:46

Agreed about the comments under the Times article.
There's a real range of discussions going on with people asking questions and commenting. I've just had a read of them and they're great. And many evidently not Mumsnetters!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2018 23:49

Well, I guess the comments reflect Times readership who will tend to be educated, non-extremist grownups.

TerfsUp · 16/04/2018 09:02

I am happy to see the comments are overwhelmingly pro-Mumsnet. The few that are critical have very few recommendations, too.

Keep up the good fight, The Times and Mumsnet.
