Justine stands up for FWR in The Times

Justine is quoted in The Times today saying that TRAs are pressuring advertisers to withdraw from the site but they’re willing to take the hit to keep the discussion open. It’s very heartening after the threads of the last few days re FWR being hidden and the worries about this space being censored.

Flowers to @JustineMumsnet - thank you.

Came straight here after reading the article with a massive grin on my face.

Well done MNHQ, you really are wonderful Flowers

There's a fair bit of fury on the twitter timeline - seems these transactivists don't like being told NO by a woman - but many many positive comments too.

I'm so impressed by Justine's stand. I will honour it by honouring WTGLWGH.

I will also positively endorse all the sponsors that stick with Mumsnet too. Mumsnetters have considerable spending power - let's use it positively rather than talking about boycotts.

AnitaLovesVictor · 15/04/2018 15:12

Judging by the AIBU thread's responses - i would say it's more than a "significant minority of feminists" too Smile

boatyardblues · 15/04/2018 15:16

Thank you so much for your principled stand, Justine & MNHQ. The removal of FWR from Active threads earlier this week had really saddened me and made me question my ongoing relationship with MN, so I am very pleased to hear you are reinstating FWR in Active threads.

I only recently became aware of the implications of self-id for women and girls. As I searched for information references to mumsnet kept cropping up - citing mumsnet as a platform for respectful and uncensored discussion.

Mumsnet was new to me and the experience has been eye-opening in all sorts of ways. Respectful and uncensored, yes, but also articulate (a rarity online) and a great help in clarifying my own position - always gender critical but largely undefinable while I lacked confidence and vocabulary.

This is to say thank you to all the mumsnetters who have patiently explained the implications of the proposed self-id legislation on multiple occasions. It is a great help to newbies like me. And thank you, of course, to MNHQ who make this possible. Flowers

Long time lurker here. Have been following the debate closely. Thank you Mumsnet for allowing freedom of speech - you are truly wonderful.

Thank you to Justine, MN Towers, and the three advertisers who refused to be bullied!

womanformallyknownaswoman · 15/04/2018 16:43

I think what's helpful is if you decide to boycott a business because of their lack of safeguarding measures for women and girls and lack of recognition of sex matters - tell them and why

Madhairday · 15/04/2018 16:43

So impressed by your stance, Justine and MN! Thank you Flowers

RosenbergW · 15/04/2018 16:55

We are all in danger of bending to the TRA right-wing ideology of loving capitalism. I am not buying any more than I need as an answer to bullying by a group of toddler men.

This. But I will switch shops and brands on the things I do buy, if I think a company is advocating child abuse or erasing women. Supporting trans activists does both.

I basically don't buy anything any more without first checking what mumsnetters think of it.

This too, but I have to check a million reviews before I buy anything these days..

PhantomSelf · 15/04/2018 16:58

Agreed @Apples in my Pocket. Thank you very muchly MN.

tiktok · 15/04/2018 17:01

So glad to see MN standing up for women and free discussion and debate!

yetanothertranswoman · 15/04/2018 17:10

Supporting trans activists does both

What would supporting trans activists look like?

numberseven · 15/04/2018 17:18

CATTamongstthepigeons · 15/04/2018 17:41

Thank you from me too Justine. I became aware of these issues through this board at a time when they were barely being reported in the media. Thank you for your strength in standing up for free speech.

Ereshkigal · 15/04/2018 17:51

Thank you Justine! Thanks

Ereshkigal · 15/04/2018 17:52

And to all at MNHQ, and the advertisers who don't give into misogynistic bullies. Thanks

abitofanangrybird · 15/04/2018 17:54

Thank you to Justine and colleagues at Mumsnet for doing the right thing. History will thank you for it.

Along with everyone else I'll stand with you and support your decision by keeping the debate civil and by supporting your advertisers who respect our right to free speech.

The tide is turning.

Sarahconnor1 · 15/04/2018 18:01

I just want to replicate a post I put in AIBU

Sarahconnor1

Argh look at what you made me do I have only gone and joined mumsnet. I have been lurking for a long time but wanted to add my thanks to Justine and the team. I also want to thank posters on the fwr who have helped me clarify my own thoughts on this issue. Agree with some other poster I suspect this is a (largely silent) majority rather than a sizeable minority.

Also I can't talk about this irl as a public sector worker it would all but destroy my career.

Thanks all! You are immense

Anlaf · 15/04/2018 18:09

Welcome Sarah and at the other lurkers

Sarahconnor1 · 15/04/2018 18:13
